Implementing Ethics Education For Nurse Managers, Mona L. Lateyice, Rachel E. Marzec May 2023

Implementing Ethics Education For Nurse Managers, Mona L. Lateyice, Rachel E. Marzec

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Every day, nurses are faced with making decisions for patient care and may come across complicated ethical decisions. Ethical practice is essential in every health care organization in providing care and how they conduct themselves (ANA, 2015). Nurse managers are responsible for ensuring ethical standards are met by nursing staff.

Problem: Nurse managers are faced with ethical problems more than fifty percent of their work time (Aitamaa, 2019). There are studies that show nurse managers and nurses have difficulty solving ethical problems because they lack understanding of ethical principles (Huang, et al., 2020). Evidence shows nurses are deficient in …

Human Diversity In Molecular Sexual Dimorphism And Gender Disparities In Health, Adam Z. Reynolds May 2023

Human Diversity In Molecular Sexual Dimorphism And Gender Disparities In Health, Adam Z. Reynolds

Anthropology ETDs

Although males and females exhibit an extraordinary range of diversity in sexual dimorphism across populations, prior work on the evolution of sexual dimorphism in human physiology and health has focused on ostensibly universal differences that owe to sex chromosomes and steroid hormones. This dissertation argues that sexual dimorphism in humans is not adequately captured by species-wide sex differences in mean trait values, but instead varies greatly as a result of: (i) our ability to adapt physiologically to a broad range of social and physical environments, and (ii) molecular diversity acquired by different populations over the course of their unique evolutionary …

Exploring The Perceptions Of Mattering Among Doctoral Students, Physical Education Teachers, And Faculty Members, Denis Schulz May 2023

Exploring The Perceptions Of Mattering Among Doctoral Students, Physical Education Teachers, And Faculty Members, Denis Schulz

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Physical Education (PE) is often considered a marginalized profession where Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs face sustainability challenges, and educators experience negative outcomes such as isolation, frustration, and emotional exhaustion. Previous research highlighted that increased perceptions of mattering can help navigate these negative feelings. The purpose of this three-study dissertation format was to explore the perceptions of mattering among PETE faculty members, PETE doctoral students, and PE teachers within different career stages. Findings from these studies indicate that PETE faculty members derive feelings of mattering from external professional networks. PETE doctoral students’ importance grows over time as they progress …

It Is What It Is... Enduring The Never-Ending: The Lived Experiences Of Parenting Adult Children With Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities, Siri Gurunam Kaur Khalsa

Nursing ETDs

The parental home is the principal place of residence for adults with developmental disabilities/ intellectual disabilities (DD/ID) (Heller et al., 2007). More than 75% of the adult population with DD/ID living in the U.S. continue to have their basic needs provided by their parents (Williamson & Perkins, 2014). This is based on the estimated statistic that 1.0 to 1.58% of the U.S. adult population has a developmental disability (Anderson et al., 2019; Fox et al., 2015). About 2.9 million adults with DD/ID live with a parent of 55 years (Byun et al., 2006), with more than 25% of these parents …

This study used dynamic assessment (DA) with graduated prompting to evaluate whether preschool-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrated learning potential with verb-based augmentative alternative communication (AAC) symbols. Four participants completed DA sessions across three instructional conditions: (a) requesting actions embedded in play, (b) labeling actions embedded in play, and (c) labeling actions presented via video. Performance across these conditions along with a control condition was compared using an adapted multielement single-case design. Three participants demonstrated learning in at least two instructional conditions, and only one showed progress in the control condition. Overall, participants initially required less cueing to …

The Affective Landscapes Of Herbalism In New Mexico, Samantha Angelou Stroud May 2023

The Affective Landscapes Of Herbalism In New Mexico, Samantha Angelou Stroud

Geography ETDs

Herbalism, or practices which use plants for medicinal purposes, is tied to traditions in several cultures of the American Southwest, including Indigenous herbal medicine, Mexican-American curanderismo, and Western herbal traditions. Herbalism has been steadily gaining mainstream popularity since the late 1960s, alongside counterculture, holistic health, and back-to-nature movements, introducing many newcomers to the practice. This study asks: How does herbalism create and attach meaning to plants, cultures, and place in New Mexico? What are the affective landscapes produced by herbalism in New Mexico? And, to what extent do meaningful attachments manifest in ethics and actions of care? I argue that …

Impact Of Emotional Processing On Working Memory In Preadolescents With High Autistic And Anxiety Traits, Teagan Mullins May 2023

Impact Of Emotional Processing On Working Memory In Preadolescents With High Autistic And Anxiety Traits, Teagan Mullins

Psychology ETDs

Adolescence is an important neurodevelopmental period that confers both opportunity for positive change, and a risk for emerging psychopathology. In particular, anxiety disorders and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) both cause significant challenges during adolescence that impact individuals throughout their lifespan. Notably, functional impacts of anxiety and ASD are not limited to those who meet diagnostic criteria, and can be present at sub-clinical levels. However, despite high rates of co-morbidity of ASD and anxiety symptomology, the degree to which the neural bases of anxiety are similar or qualitatively different in individuals with and without autistic traits is unknown. One candidate neurobehavioral …

Incentives To Learn: A Location-Based Federated Learning Model, Ryan Kilpatrick-Morrison Brown May 2023

Incentives To Learn: A Location-Based Federated Learning Model, Ryan Kilpatrick-Morrison Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Federated Learning (FL) effectiveness depends, among others, on the quality and quantity of the training data and process realized at the end computing nodes. In this paper, we introduce a novel location-based federated learning model, enabled by a low-cost and fast deployable Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) - based approach that allows to accurately determine the distributed computing nodes’ positions. Furthermore, in order to train a global model to support different types of smart city applications, while considering two types of servers, offering a prime and common service, respectively, under different costs, the proposed location-based FL model is complemented by an …

Polyscopic Spectatorship, Creative Cartography, And Post-Cinematic Refractions In The Age Of Neo-Liberal Travel: An Investigation Of Youtube Travel-Vloggers, Niko T. Doezema

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

One of the most popular forms of travel “literature” consumed today is the travel-vlog. YouTube is awash in these travelers, the most successful of which even make a career out of their travels through monetization of their content, allowing them to pay for traveling by traveling. My project is a three-fold investigation into the nature of this genre, the first two branches of which are genealogical and diagnostic, the third of which is speculative and potentially transformative. My first inquiry examines the historical and generic conditions at the crossroads of travel literature and empire that have led to the present …

Neuroinflammatory And Metabolomic Temporal Dynamics From Inhaled Wildfire Smoke With Attenuation Via Pharmacological Intervention, David Scieszka May 2023

Neuroinflammatory And Metabolomic Temporal Dynamics From Inhaled Wildfire Smoke With Attenuation Via Pharmacological Intervention, David Scieszka

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Wildfire smoke is a global issue affecting nearly all humans on the surface of this Earth. Smoke dispersion from wildfires can span continents and cross oceans with amazing ease. Furthermore, total acres of land burned per year in the United States has roughly doubled since 1980, meaning this issue will persist for an indeterminate amount of time. Exposure to wildfire smoke is hazardous and promotes aging-associated events in the cardiopulmonary systems. Yet long- and short-term effects on the brain remain relatively unknown. From these, it is critically important to understand the neurological impacts from wildfire smoke exposure; to compare these …

The Situated Expectancy-Value Theory provided the theoretical underpinning to our second …

The “Afro In Afrolatinidad”: Examining Afrolatinx Experiences Of Blackness Through And Afrolatin Critical Theory Of Race, Celine Maria Ayala Ph.D May 2023

The “Afro In Afrolatinidad”: Examining Afrolatinx Experiences Of Blackness Through And Afrolatin Critical Theory Of Race, Celine Maria Ayala Ph.D

Sociology ETDs

Scholars of Afrolatinidad across disciplines often use their work to highlight the diversity of the Latinx community (Cahuas, 2019). Those who highlight Blackness in Latinidad tend to do so by merging Chicanx, and other Latinx theories with theories of Blackness that are centered on African American experiences. Although important, these works only tell one side of a multivariant story. Using a critical, diasporic, intersectional theoretical approach, which I call an Afrolatin Critical Theory of Race (ACTR), along with 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews, I find that Afrolatinx folk navigate Blackness, educational attainment and language in ways that debunk the myth of …

The Gayborhood Was Never Here For Some Of Us! Health Consequences Of Racialized Exclusion Among U.S. Sexual Minorities Across The Lifecourse, Kasim Ortiz May 2023

The Gayborhood Was Never Here For Some Of Us! Health Consequences Of Racialized Exclusion Among U.S. Sexual Minorities Across The Lifecourse, Kasim Ortiz

Sociology ETDs

Sexual minorities exhibit elevated rates of cigarette smoking, although disparate patterns exist when examining racial/ethnic differences among sexual minorities in the United States. Evidence suggests examining differing neighborhood contexts may help illuminate drivers of tobacco-related outcomes among sexual minorities, especially with respect to racial/ethnic variations among this understudied population. Adapting a framework of whiteness and health, the current project examined the role of racial residential segregation and neighborhood disadvantage as neighborhood contexts significantly associated with cigarette smoking across the adult lifespan. Using data from the 2010 Social Justice Sexual Project, merged with U.S. Census data, I find that residing in …

The Lithium Economy: Bolivia's "New" Resource And Its Role In Revolutionary Politics, Zsofia J. Szoke May 2023

The Lithium Economy: Bolivia's "New" Resource And Its Role In Revolutionary Politics, Zsofia J. Szoke

Anthropology ETDs

Through an ethnographic analysis of the lithium industry this dissertation recounts the complex way lithium industrialization has interacted with Bolivia’s democratic and cultural revolution, officially known as the proceso de cambio, and with localized social forms and structures, which the national-level revolution seeks to reconstitute. I will argue that it is important to examine the implications of lithium industrialization’s intersection with local experiences of revolutionary politics. The dissertation’s main contention is that the industrialization of lithium in Bolivia has been conceptualized as an insurgent tool of political change and social transformation by the Morales-Linera regime and as such it has …

Energy-Efficient Operation And Performance Optimization In Computing Systems, Nafis Irtija May 2023

Energy-Efficient Operation And Performance Optimization In Computing Systems, Nafis Irtija

In the modern world, an expansive range of computing systems are being used, and in all of these systems, energy efficiency and performance optimization are of utmost significance. But performance optimization means different things for different computing systems. Because of their difference in nature, computing systems have different requirements for efficiency and optimization. Distributed systems such as smart-grid systems, edge-computing environments, and blockchain systems focus on the behavior of the agents. Thus, the application of network economics principles, such as Game Theory and Contract Theory, can improve the operation of these systems in a multitude of ways. On the other …

"It Was Really Up To Us": The History Of The Black Berets Of Albuquerque In The Chicana/O Movement Of New Mexico, Jerome J. Chavez

Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs

This study examines the history of the Black Berets of Albuquerque and their role in the Chicana/o Movement of New Mexico. The Black Berets of Albuquerque were part of a trend in the Civil Rights and Chicana/o Movement era that saw militant youth-based community groups in urban areas form in response to racial discrimination, poverty, educational and health disparities, and police brutality. The issues the Black Berets formed to confront were based on the unique urbanization process that Albuquerque went through that created political and economic disempowerment for the Chicana/o people but made the city a major site for Chicana/o …

Mental Distress Among Adults With Serious Mental Illness In A Criminal Legal Setting: A Secondary Data Analysis Of The Mcarthur Mental Health Court Study Data, Violette Cloud

Psychology ETDs

Chronic criminal legal system (CLS) involvement among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) is of growing concern. Mental health courts (MHCs) are a known diversion strategy currently used by the CLS to address this problem. MHCs are seen as an effective method for linking individuals with SMI to needed treatment, removing them from a detention setting, and subsequently reducing recidivism. However, less is known about the impact of MHC enrollment on mental health related outcomes (mental distress). Using the McArthur Mental Health Court Study data, this study aimed to inspect the impact of MHC participation, legal coercion, and treatment motivation …
