Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by leukocytosis with left-shifted neutrophilia, basophilia, eosinophilia, and variable thrombocytosis. However, extremely rare cases of patients with CML without significant leukocytosis and thrombocytosis (aleukemic phase [ALP] CML, or CML-ALP) have been reported. Due to its rarity and limited awareness, there remains a significant knowledge gap concerning the pathologic diagnosis, disease progression, and optimal patient management and outcomes. In this multi-institutional study, we investigated 31 patients with CML-ALP. Over half (54.8%) of patients had a history of or concurrent hematopoietic or nonhematopoietic malignancies. At time of diagnosis of CML-ALP, approximately 26.7% of patients exhibited neutrophilia, …

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Adverse gestational outcomes of pregnancy are a globally occurring threat to fetomaternal health, with limited clinical prognostic and intervention strategies aside from premature labor induction. Epidemiological data shows strong correlations between gestational exposure to air pollution and the incidence of adverse gestational outcomes. The research presented here was designed to evaluate potential murine models of gestational exposure, as well as quantify maternal cardiovascular damage therein. These studies employ radiotelemetry, echocardiography, single cell RNA-sequencing, and untargeted lipidomic analyses in efforts to study these effects. Results implicate cardiovascular responses to mid-gestational ozone exposure as evidenced by decreased maternal cardiac output and increased …
Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi
Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
FcεRI is the ITAM receptor primarily responsible for the allergic response and immune hypersensitivity diseases such as asthma. Regulation of the strength of both FcεRI signaling, and the resulting outcomes, is accomplished via a complex array of molecular mechanisms whose interactions remain unclear. Here, I explored how the biophysical properties of antigens, crosstalk between FcεRI and integrin signaling and Arf6-mediated control of trafficking and exocytosis tune mast cell outcomes. I first found significant differences in FcεRI aggregation, phosphorylation and granule secretion after crosslinking with the multivalent antigen DNP-BSA or the small, trivalent antigen DF3. I also revealed a bi-directional, Syk-mediated …

Amicus Curiae Brief Of The Navajo Nation, Paul Spruhan
Amicus Curiae Brief Of The Navajo Nation, Paul Spruhan
Faculty Scholarship
The Navajo Nation Labor Commission ("NNLC" or "Commission") invited the Navajo Nation Department of Justice ("DOJ") to file an amicus brief in this matter. As discussed more fully below, the DOJ recommends that the NNLC hold an evidentiary hearing to gather facts necessary to conduct a full jurisdictional analysis under Montana and determine whether the Northern Apache County Special Healthcare District ("NACSHCD") has sovereign immunity. The fact gathering process is necessary given the fact-intensive analysis under both Montana and Arizona's sovereign immunity laws. As the Navajo Supreme Court has instructed, the proper threshold inquiry is whether jurisdiction exists over the …

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer presents a physical and mental burden to the patient, often involving diagnostic biopsies and surgeries or chemotherapeutic approaches with severe side-effects. Advances which enable early detection of cancer and close monitoring of the disease course without invasive procedures, and which can underpin a tailored approach to treatment, can therefore make a big difference to the quality of life of patients. Liquid biopsies can be used to access tumor cells and tumor DNA circulating in the blood. Monitoring these species can provide a minimally invasive and repeatable means to detect cancer, or gain information about …

We identified preferences toward Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF)-recommended intervention approaches among screen-eligible Zuni Pueblo members in New Mexico, USA and assessed if there were significant differences in those preferences, with the goal of informing the selection of intervention approaches for use in the Zuni Pueblo. We utilize data from a population-based survey (n = 280) focused on 15 CPSTF-recommended intervention approaches designed to improve screening for cervical, breast, and/or colorectal cancer screening. Model-adjusted results suggest some intervention approaches garnered significantly higher support than others. We offer six, data-driven recommendations for consideration by public health practitioners as they endeavor …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and is also the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the USA. Understanding the mechanisms of growth and progression of CRC is essential to improve treatment. Macronutrients such as glucose are energy source for a cell. Many tumor cells exhibit increased aerobic glycolysis. Increased tissue micronutrient iron levels in both mice and humans are also associated with increased colon tumorigenesis. However, if iron drives colon carcinogenesis via affecting glucose metabolism is still not clear. Here we found the intracellular glucose levels in tumor colonoids were significantly increased after iron treatment.

Post-Wildfire Export Regimes Of Solutes Along The Gallinas-Pecos River-Santa Rosa Fluvial Network, Asmita Kaphle
Civil Engineering ETDs
Wildfires significantly contribute to water pollution when ash and sediments, including nutrients and metals, are released into fluvial systems, impacting aquatic ecosystems and surrounding communities. This study focuses on the impacts of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire on the Gallinas and Pecos watersheds. It employs five monitoring stations along a 190km fluvial network to assess solute export regimes post-fire, where grab samples were collected for nutrient and metal analyses for a period of more than a year. The metrics used for characterizing mobilization, chemostatic, or dilution patterns indicated mobilization for most solutes at all sites upstream of Santa Rosa Lake. …

A Moving Target Architecture As A Side-Channel Countermeasure, Rachel M. Cazzola
A Moving Target Architecture As A Side-Channel Countermeasure, Rachel M. Cazzola
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
We investigate a novel side-channel attack countermeasure called Side-channel Power analysis Resistance for Encryption Algorithms using Dynamic partial reconfiguration (SPREAD). The countermeasure leverages a strategy that is best characterized as a moving target architecture. Modern field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architectures provide support for dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR), a feature that allows real-time reconfiguration of portions of the programmable logic (PL) while the FPGA continues to carry out computing tasks. Using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the proposed moving target architecture leverages DPR to change the implementation characteristics of the substitution boxes (SBOX) in real time. We present experimental hardware results …
