Culturally and contextually valid measurement of psychological distress is critical, given the increasing numbers of forcibly displaced people and transnational migration. This study replicates an inductive process that elicited culturally specific expressions, understandings, and idioms of distress among Afghans to develop culturally specific measures of distress for Great Lakes Africans and Iraqis and expands this methodology to include a focus on the contexts of refugees resettled in the United States. To create the measures, we adapted Miller et al.'s (2006) model for the

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses that can sometimes cause severe disease in humans; however, they are maintained in mammalian host populations without causing harm. In Panama, sigmodontine rodents serve as hosts to transmissible hantaviruses. Due to natural and anthropogenic forces, these rodent populations are having increased contact with humans.
METHODS: We extracted RNA and performed Illumina deep metatranscriptomic sequencing on Orthohantavirus seropositive museum tissues from rodents. We acquired sequence reads mapping to Choclo virus (CHOV, Orthohantavirus chocloense) from heart and kidney tissue of a two-decade old frozen museum sample from a Costa Rican pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys costaricensis) collected …

Understanding The Procedural Skills Needed In Rural Pediatric Practices: A Survey Of Rural Pediatric Providers In The State Of New Mexico, Christal P Chow, Deirdre A Hill, Walter Dehority, E Anne Greene
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
OBJECTIVES: There is little data evaluating procedural skills in current rural pediatric practices. In order to prepare a cadre of pediatricians to work in rural settings, we require an understanding of the unique procedural skills needed by rural pediatric providers. Our objective was to determine how often pediatricians performed various procedural skills, determine the importance of these skills to current practice, and how they differ between rural and urban pediatric providers.
METHODS: A survey evaluating pediatrician utilization of the 13 required Accreditation Council Graduate Medical Education procedural skills in current practice was developed and distributed to pediatric providers in New …

The Supreme Court, starting in 1971, has lit upon a reckless path of protecting speech that is, by any reasonable measure, appallingly vulgar, emotionally hurtful, and dangerous. Against the wishes of the community, the Court has protected a roster of extremely offensive speech:
• a rageful repetition of the F-word uttered by a teacher before children in a school auditorium
• a White skinhead’s cross burning on the front lawn of a Black family’s house
• the public burning of the American flag by an avowed Communist who hated the United States and who cared nothing for the emotional pain …

Telemedicine Quality Improvement During The Corona Virus 2019 Pandemic Increases Pediatric Weight Management Access, Monique K. Vallabhan, Kathryne Foos, Patricia Roldan, Sylvia Negrete, Janet M Page-Reeves, Elizabeth Y. Jimenez, Alberta S. Kong
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: The corona virus 2019 pandemic disrupted care for pediatric patients with chronic conditions, including those with childhood obesity. Lockdowns forced providers to create new ways of caring for this population. Telemedicine was a promising but previously unavailable solution. This quality improvement report details how the Healthy and Fit Children's Clinic transitioned and improved care via telemedicine.
METHODS: Between March 2020 and April 2021, the quality improvement project team incorporated the Model for Improvement to transition the clinic to telemedicine. The team tracked Healthy and Fit Children's Clinic appointments, no-shows, billing and reimbursement data, and noted unintended consequences or unanticipated …

OBJECTIVES: Trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) occurs in a subset of severely injured trauma patients. Despite having achieved surgical hemostasis, these individuals can have persistent bleeding, clotting, or both in conjunction with deranged coagulation parameters and typically require transfusion support with plasma, platelets, and/or cryoprecipitate. Due to the multifactorial nature of TIC, targeted interventions usually do not have significant clinical benefits. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a non-specific modality of removing and replacing a patient's plasma in a euvolemic manner that can temporarily normalize coagulation parameters and remove deleterious substances, and may be beneficial in such patients with TIC.
METHODS: In a …

This paper explores the exposome concept and its role in elucidating the interplay between environmental exposures and human health. We introduce two key concepts critical for exposomics research. Firstly, we discuss the joint impact of genetics and environment on phenotypes, emphasizing the variance attributable to shared and nonshared environmental factors, underscoring the complexity of quantifying the exposome's influence on health outcomes. Secondly, we introduce the importance of advanced data-driven methods in large cohort studies for exposomic measurements. Here, we introduce the exposome-wide association study (ExWAS), an approach designed for systematic discovery of relationships between phenotypes and various exposures, identifying significant …

Automated Stategraft: Electronic Enforcement Technology And The Economic Predation Of Black Communities, Sonia Gipson Rankin, Melanie E. Moses, Kathy Powers
Faculty Scholarship
Automated traffic enforcement systems disproportionately impact Black communities in the United States. This Essay uncovers a troubling reality: while technologies such as speed cameras and red light cameras are often touted as tools for public safety by the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration, they disproportionately burden Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The authors coin the term “automated stategraft” to describe this phenomenon—an insidious process that siphons financial resources from already vulnerable groups under the guise of law enforcement. In doing so, it exacerbates economic disparities and erodes trust in legal and governmental institutions.
This Essay delves into the biases inherent in …

A Review At Two Nuclear Reactor Problems In Asia, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The development of nuclear power plants (NPP) is often a heated debate, especially in developing countries [1]. In relation to this, it is worth the public's attention that lately, it seems that there have been increasingly frequent press releases from various parties representing the government regarding plans to build the first nuclear fission reactor in Indonesia in the not too distant future. Reportedly there will be a large amount of additional energy supply planned (around 100 GW to be built in Indonesia within the coming decade). For this reason, the authors would like to invite readers to take a moment …

‘People With Disabilities,’ ‘Disabled People,’ Or ‘The Disabled’: A Corpus Analysis Of Disability Labeling Constructions, Eliza Forrest
‘People With Disabilities,’ ‘Disabled People,’ Or ‘The Disabled’: A Corpus Analysis Of Disability Labeling Constructions, Eliza Forrest
Linguistics ETDs
The way language shapes perceptions about disability is a complex and long-debated topic within popular disability discourse. With the rise of “person-first” language in recent decades, this debate has shifted toward a grammatical, rather than lexical one, contrasting forms such as people with disabilities, disabled people, and the disabled. While these different construction types—prepositional, attributive, and nominalized, respectively—refer to the same entity, the purported connotations of each have been highly contested. Despite this, research on the topic has been limited and mixed, particularly for studies focusing on actual usage. By analyzing these constructions in the Corpus of …
