El Niño & Lter Sites, David Greenland, Climate Committee
Long Term Ecological Research Network
An intense El Niño event can have severe impacts on the ecosystems of the west coast of South America. The upwelling of nutrient rich water off the coast is suppressed. Anchovy stocks dramatically decline, as do the seabird populations who live from them. The decline of the seabird populations negatively impacts the fertilizer industry which depends upon the guano produced by the birds. The fishing industry suffers from the lack of fish. Further impacts on terrestrial ecosystems of the region are noted below. It has long been recognized that during El Niño event effects are felt in other parts of …

The purpose of this symposium is to discuss the organization, design, implementation and preliminary evaluation of an inter-university collaborative learning experience that used computer mediated communication (CMC) to link graduate students in several universities to discuss issues related to distance education. The discussion is based on the Globaled project, a computer conference that was set up and implemented for the second time, during the Fall 1993 semester. Globaled was first implemented during the Spring of 1992. Hispanic Weavers Of Northern New Mexico: Three Families, Helen Lucero
Hispanic Weavers Of Northern New Mexico: Three Families, Helen Lucero
SHRI Publications
Weaving has been an ongoing traditional folk art in northern New Mexico for hundreds of years. There are currently about 200-250 Hispanic weavers in the area. Although these weavers are carrying on a centuries-old tradition, no two weave exactly alike or have the same experiences to relate regarding their weaving. In an effort to present an introduction to contemporary Hispanic weavers and their lives, three families have been studied and documented: the Ortegas of Chimayo, the Trujillos of Chimayo, and the Martinez of Medanales. These three families have been singled out because they reflect different facets of Hispanic weaving: commercialism, …
