The Forest Service, Water Yield, And Community Stability: Defining The Contours Of An Agency Commitment To Include Land Grant Communities In The Timber Management Process, Brett Olsen
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
John Wesley Powell\'s 1878 Report on the Lands of the Arid Region of the United States and later Irrigation Surveys proposed a settlement pattern based upon watersheds or "hydrographic basins." Powell\'s plan died ingloriously in the Senate Committee on Irrigation. Profligate overgrazing and logging in the West\'s forested uplands would force the federal reservation of the National Forests under the Organic Administrative Act of 1897. The Act directed the management of reserved, upland watersheds for the twin purposes of "securing favorable conditions of water flows, and to furnish a continuous supply of timber for the ... citizens of the United …

High Performance Computing Applications In Remote Sensing Studies For Land Cover Dynamics, S. Kalluri, J. Jájá, D.A. Bader, Z. Zhang, J. Townshend, H. Fallah-Adl
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Global and regional land cover studies require the ability to apply complex models on selected subsets of large amounts of multi-sensor and multi-temporal data sets that have been derived from raw instrument measurements using widely accepted pre-processing algorithms. The computational and storage requirements of most such studies far exceed what is possible on a single workstation environment. We have been pursuing a new approach that couples scalable and open distributed heterogeneous hardware with the development of high performance software for processing, indexing, and organizing remotely sensed data. Hierarchical data management tools are used to ingest raw data, create metadata, and …

One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty's scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 1998 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University's laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support …

Relating to the practice of medicine in the large sense, this subset of the IEL covers national and international medical law. Each national monograph contains, besides a general introduction, a description for the country in question of:
the law related to the medical profession, such as access to the medical profession, illegal practice of medicine and control over the practice of medicine;

Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson
Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson
Faculty Scholarship
The organizations and individuals who have produced this report have worked for years to promote environmentally sound federal policy and action with respect to water in the American West. The Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission's (the "Commission") evaluation of these issues presents an excellent opportunity to address long-standing concerns. We believe the Commission can help advance federal policy to promote sustainable use, management and protection of western waters. We begin with a brief look at current water problems in the West from our perspective. We then identify four general priorities for the federal government: taking steps toward restoring more …
