Assessing The Effects Of New Public Transportation Routes : An Equity Analysis On The Changing Accessibility Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Calvin Tribby Aug 2009

Assessing The Effects Of New Public Transportation Routes : An Equity Analysis On The Changing Accessibility Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Calvin Tribby

Geography ETDs

This research details the application of a public transportation accessibility model using travel time as the accessibility measure. The primary objective was to develop a multi-modal network model for detecting change in travel time at the household level as the result of the implementation of new rapid bus routes. This method is situated in the accessibility measures of transportation equity, a focus of research in the broader field of transportation geography. The level of detail that current accessibility studies use to evaluate public transit are not detailed enough to capture travel time changes at the household level and through varying …

Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold Aug 2009

Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold

Geography ETDs

Global Positioning Systems devices are increasingly being used for data collection in many fields. Consumer-grade GPS units without differential correction have a published horizontal accuracy of approximately 10 to 15 meters (average error). An attractive option for differential correction for these GPS units is the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). Most consumer-grade GPS units on the market are WAAS capable. According to the FAA, the WAAS broadcast message provides integrity information about the GPS signal as well as accuracy improvements which are reported to improve accuracy to 3 to 5 meters. However, limited empirical evidence has been published on the …

Distributed Load Balancing Over Directed Network Topologies, Alejandro Gonzalez Ruiz Aug 2009

Distributed Load Balancing Over Directed Network Topologies, Alejandro Gonzalez Ruiz

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Due to the increasing demand for high performance computing and the increasing availability of high speed networks, it has become possible to interconnect various geographically distributed computational elements (nodes) so that they can work cooperatively and obtain a performance not attainable by individual nodes. In the literature, distributing the total computation load across available processors is referred to as load balancing. This thesis considers the problem of distributed load balancing over directed graphs that are not fully connected. The impact of network topology on the stability and balance of distributed computing is studied. Furthermore, Informed Load Balancing (I-LB) is proposed. …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell Aug 2009

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell

Sociology ETDs

This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas Aug 2009

Criminal Law As A Constitutive Strategy: The Colombian Case, Farid Samir Benavides Vanegas

Research Papers

In this text I analyze the role criminal law has played in the production of subaltern subjectivities in Colombia. Criminal law and criminological discourse have been important to control subaltern groups and to constitute their identities. Colombian elites have appealed to criminal law to solve their social problems, in a strategy that has been labeled as laws symbolic efficiency or as 'penal efficienticism'.'

Impunidade No Sistema De Justiça Criminal Brasileiro: Uma Revisão Dos Estudos Produzidos Sobre O Tema, Ludmila Ribeiro

Research Papers

BBER Publications

In 2009 UNM-BBER investigated the arts and cultural (A & C) economy in Raton, New Mexico, with a focus on an inventory and assessment of the communitys cultural assets. According to the authors, a principle challenge for Raton is to leverage the sense of place and natural environment of the region to create a broader market, thus providing the jobs and revenues necessary for long-term growth and sustainability of the creative economy. The study consisted of three parts: an extensive inventory of the local creative economy's assets; a community-based survey of artists, retailers, and others engaged in creative industries; and …

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo Jul 2009

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo

History ETDs

After attaining statehood in 1912, New Mexico witnessed an influx of American people, culture and controversies. This thesis tracks the development of controversies over the theory of evolution in the public schools of the state of New Mexico during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Beginning with the states reaction to the 1925 Scopes trial, I discuss the reasons that the evolution controversy remained largely muted in 1920s New Mexico. Next, I examine the brief, but unique, 1927 evolution controversy sparked by a rumor of legislation to mandate the teaching of evolution. From there, I describe New Mexico's …

Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson Jul 2009

Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson

Linguistics ETDs

Nearly all such studies have sought to understand the linguistic constraints of spoken languages, while largely neglecting signed languages. Despite the fact that spoken languages can be classified into types, signed languages are generally assumed to be clustered all together in one type which the current study challenges. Exploring the potential for a varied typology among signed languages requires identifying patterns across a sampling of geographically distinct and historically unrelated signed languages to formulate linguistic generalizations. To that end this study adopts Greenbergs 1966 analysis of Universals of Kinship Terminology, it examines the linguistic patterns that emerge from a comparison …

Imagining The Noble And Loyal City: An Introduction To The Biombo Franz Mayer, Madalena Consuelo Salazar Jul 2009

Imagining The Noble And Loyal City: An Introduction To The Biombo Franz Mayer, Madalena Consuelo Salazar

Art & Art History ETDs

The decorative arts of New Spain had, until recently, been peripheral in art historical discourse. Current scholars have begun to widen the lens of interpretation to include new spheres of influence and objects that defy traditional disciplinary classifications. One such object is the Biombo Franz Mayer, a viceregal biombo, or folding screen. Although useful for elucidating larger themes, recent studies have de-contextualized the Biombo by regarding the object in terms of group identity or as a representation of colonized spaces. Building on previous scholarship, this thesis will reintroduce the object's context, and through formal and iconographic analyses, study the screen …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner Jul 2009

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner

Anthropology ETDs

This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …

Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter May 2009

Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Effective and affordable arsenic removal from drinking water has become a significant issue recently. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has promulgated a new maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic in drinking water which will take effect in January 2004. The current arsenic MCL of 50 micrograms per liter (ugll) was set by the United sates Public Health Service in 1943 and has not been reduced in nearly 60 years. Arsenic has been linked to various types of cancers, prompting EPA to change the standard. Due to the fact many water systems, especially small water utilities serving less than …

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell May 2009

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell

Biology ETDs

Community wide molecular surveys have revealed incredible hidden phylogenetic and metabolic diversity in microbial habitats. We have conducted the first microbial survey of Yellowstone National Park thermal environments, sampling 103 communities from across the park and across the range of conditions found. Yellowstone is particularly suited for this type of research because of the large number and wide variety of thermal springs, which are naturally occurring chemostats enabling examination of the factors that control microbes and drive community structure. In addition to samples for molecular microbial analysis, we collected water for extensive geochemical analysis in order to begin to deduce …

The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin May 2009

The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin

Anthropology ETDs

Austronesian is one of the major language groups spoken. It is believed that Taiwan, Indonesian (east of Wallace line), or Bismarck Archipelago is the starting point for Austronesian migrations. It is also suggested that prehistoric cultures of Taiwan were established by the ancestors of the modern Taiwanese indigenous populations, who are also Austronesian speakers. The goals of this project are to estimate biological relationships of the San-Pau-Chu (SPC) to other Asian populations (especially Polynesians) and to evaluate if Taiwan indeed plays a major role in the history of Austronesian migrations by using both dental morphological data (metric and nonmetric dental …

Distributed Internet Security And Measurement, Josh Karlin May 2009

Distributed Internet Security And Measurement, Josh Karlin

Computer Science ETDs

The Internet has developed into an important economic, military, academic, and social resource. It is a complex network, comprised of tens of thousands of independently operated networks, called Autonomous Systems (ASes). A significant strength of the Internet's design, one which enabled its rapid growth in terms of users and bandwidth, is that its underlying protocols (such as IP, TCP, and BGP) are distributed. Users and networks alike can attach and detach from the Internet at will, without causing major disruptions to global Internet connectivity. This dissertation shows that the Internet's distributed, and often redundant structure, can be exploited to increase …
