Sampling Strategies For Finite Population Using Auxiliary Information, Florentin Smarandache, Rajesh Singh
Sampling Strategies For Finite Population Using Auxiliary Information, Florentin Smarandache, Rajesh Singh
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The present book aims to present some improved estimators using auxiliary and attribute information in case of simple random sampling and stratified random sampling and in some cases when non-response is present. This volume is a collection of five papers, written by seven co-authors (listed in the order of the papers): Sachin Malik, Rajesh Singh, Florentin Smarandache, B. B. Khare, P. S. Jha, Usha Srivastava and Habib Ur. Rehman. The first and the second papers deal with the problem of estimating the finite population mean when some information on two auxiliary attributes are available. In the third paper, problems related …
Community Ecology, Climate Change And Ecohydrology In Desert Grassland And Shrubland, Matthew Daniel Petrie
Community Ecology, Climate Change And Ecohydrology In Desert Grassland And Shrubland, Matthew Daniel Petrie
Biology ETDs
This dissertation explores the climate, ecology and hydrology of Chihuahuan Desert ecosystems in the context of global climate change. In coming decades, the southwestern United States is projected to experience greater temperature-driven aridity, possible small decreases in annual precipitation, and a later onset of summer monsoon rainfall. These changes may have profound consequences for ecological systems in the Chihuahuan Desert, which are intensely water-limited and respond to even small pulses of moisture availability. The first chapter (Chapter 2) compares change in the properties of monsoon season precipitation from 1910-2010 in the northern Chihuahuan Desert region to local variability in monsoon …
Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Aridification Across Southwest North America, Shannon Miller Jones
Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Aridification Across Southwest North America, Shannon Miller Jones
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Southwestern region of North America (SWNA) is projected to become more arid throughout the 21st century as precipitation (P) and evaporation (E) rates change with increasing global temperatures. Trends in the regional surface moisture balance (P−E) of SWNA vary between the arid southern subregion (mostly Northern Mexico) and the more temperate northern subregion (Southwest US), depending on the relative contributions of cold and warm season P and E. Interpreting the spatial and seasonal variations of the projected aridification is important for understanding the potential impacts of climate change on SWNA regional hydrology. We compare the projected trends in P, …
Examining The Influence Of Landscape On Natural Resource Management In The American West: A Geospatial Approach, Robert Fonner
Examining The Influence Of Landscape On Natural Resource Management In The American West: A Geospatial Approach, Robert Fonner
Economics ETDs
Landscapes can influence natural resource values and management in a variety of ways. These diverse influences can be generated by biophysical or social systems, or interactions between systems. This dissertation examines the landscape determinants of natural resource values and management. Chapter 2 examines moose habitat preferences with a spatial discrete-choice model. The study tests for spatial autocorrelation and compares the results to results from nonspatial models. The objective of this analysis is to explore the human-based and naturally occurring determinants of moose habitat selection while presenting a method and example for addressing spatial correlation between spatially positioned alternatives in a …
Since I Know Myself: A Cultural Examination Of Medicinal Plant Use In The Commonwealth Of Dominica, Maureen Meyer
Since I Know Myself: A Cultural Examination Of Medicinal Plant Use In The Commonwealth Of Dominica, Maureen Meyer
Geography ETDs
This research examines Dominican culture through exploring medicinal plant use on the island. Dominica, located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean Archipelago, offers a distinctive setting because historically there has been an amalgamation of cultures that have participated in and influenced the formation of Dominican culture. This research sought to identify what plants were known and used on the island in order to assess cultural retention and syncretism that has evolved as a result of the comingling of these cultures. In so doing, it was evident that environmental knowledge gained through experience has been critical for survival throughout Dominican …
Managing Complex Water Resource Systems For Ecological Integrity: Evaluating Tradeoffs And Uncertainty, Ryan Morrison
Managing Complex Water Resource Systems For Ecological Integrity: Evaluating Tradeoffs And Uncertainty, Ryan Morrison
Civil Engineering ETDs
Water resource systems often contain numerous components that are intertwined or contradictory, such as power production, water delivery, recreation, and environmental needs. This complexity makes it difficult to holistically assess management alternatives. In addition, hydroclimatic and ecological uncertainties complicate efforts to evaluate the impacts of management scenarios. We need new tools that are able to inform managers and researchers of the tradeoffs or consequences associated with flow alternatives, while also explicitly incorporating sources of uncertainty. My research addresses this limitation using two modeling approaches: stochastic system dynamics modeling and Bayesian network modeling. Specifically, the objectives of my research were 1) …
Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac
Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac
Geography ETDs
This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

The End Of Sustainability, Melinda Harm Benson, Robin Kundis Craig
The End Of Sustainability, Melinda Harm Benson, Robin Kundis Craig
Publications
It is time to move past the concept of sustainability. The realities of the Anthropocene warrant this conclusion. They include unprecedented and irreversible rates of human-induced biodiversity loss, exponential increases in per-capita resource consumption, and global climate change. These factors combine to create an increasing likelihood of rapid, nonlinear, social and ecological regime changes. The recent failure of the Rio +20 provides an opportunity to collectively reexamine--and ultimately move past--the concept of sustainability as an environmental goal. We must face the impossibility of defining--let alone pursuing--a goal of "sustainability" in a world characterized by such extreme complexity, radical uncertainty and …
Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte
Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte
Faculty Publications
The conference “Cultures of Exile: Conversations on Language and the Arts,” co-organized by Professors Eleni Bastea and Walter Putnam, was inspired by the music of Georges Moustaki (1934--2013), especially his song “Le Métèque” (1969). In “Le Métèque” Moustaki dealt with outsiders, strangers, and all those who do not share one homogeneous place of origin. What does it mean to be a “métèque,” an exile, an outsider today? Although often associated with loss and victimhood, exile can also foster artistic freedom, creativity, renewal, and empowerment. What is the role of the new place in the development of one’s artistic oeuvre? How …

Analyzing Geological Materials Under Martian Conditions Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy : Plasma Fundamentals, Sample Classification, And Trace Element Quanitification, Ann Ollila
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emission spectroscopy analysis technique that continues to be developed for the study of solids, liquids and gases. Geological applications for LIBS are a particularly exciting area of research, in part due to the capabilities of the technique to quickly and simultaneously detect nearly all major, minor and trace elements on unprepared samples either in a laboratory setting or in situ. A significant advancement in LIBS research is the recent deployment of ChemCam to the surface of Mars at Gale crater onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity. ChemCam consists of a LIBS instrument …

Struggles On The Path To Renewable Energy: Lessons From Sunzia, Rachel Giron
Struggles On The Path To Renewable Energy: Lessons From Sunzia, Rachel Giron
Natural Resources Journal
The SunZia Southwest Transmission Project is a high-voltage transmission line under development in southern New Mexico and Arizona. The project was created to allow the expansion of the renewable energy production economy, and is also part of larger efforts at climate change mitigation. It has the support of federal and state governments, and has been fast-tracked by the Obama Administration. However, in spite of its potential to increase the availability of clean energy, conflicts between local environmental groups and government agencies over siting difficulties have impeded its development. Efforts to streamline the permitting process have been largely unsuccessful, as they …
Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker
Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker
Faculty Scholarship
While the need to acquire a working understanding of our laws and regulations seems only to grow, access to legal information is still largely kept at a premium by legal educators, who provide it almost exclusively through the juris doctor degree.
Only a small percentage of American law schools offer master's-level legal-studies degrees, which are typically equivalent to taking two semesters' worth of law-school courses. These non-J.D. graduate degrees are aimed at students seeking knowledge about law, but combining such programs with subject matter drawn from other disciplines to create discrete programs remains rare.

Virtually every sector of today's economy would benefit from employing workers with more than superficial knowledge of the law. Fields potentially ripe for the concept include health-care policy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, public affairs, banking, and environmental sciences, to name just a few. An interdisciplinary approach would provide graduates of these new programs with greater access to the job markets of interdisciplinary partners—something that traditional joint degrees based on combining the J.D. program with master's degrees from other disciplines rarely do.
Restraurant Regions : An Ecological Community Based Model Of Restaurant Chain Distribution In The United States, Stephen Griego
Restraurant Regions : An Ecological Community Based Model Of Restaurant Chain Distribution In The United States, Stephen Griego
Geography ETDs
The scope of this paper is an exercise in regional identification within the geography of the United States. This paper applied a hierarchical clustering methodology to analyze the distribution of restaurants in the landscape. The clustering model utilized in this study is commonly used in analysis of ecological communities. Each restaurant chain was treated as an individual biological species, and the clustering software analyzed it as such. The individual restaurant chain locations were treated as individual samples in the environment. Wards (1963) algorithm was used to group the individual restaurant chain locations into related clusters using simple correlation as the …

Assessing Uncertainty In Volunteered Geographic Information For Emergency Response, Michael Camponovo
Geography ETDs
This research project examines data produced by volunteers through the Ushahidi web platform in response to the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010. Volunteers translated messages submitted by victims in Haiti, categorized each message based on its content, and georeferenced each message on a dynamic web based map. When categorizing the data, volunteers were able to assign up to 8 main and 42 subcategories to each message. Initial inspection of the attribute data produced by the volunteers indicated a strong discrepancy between the contents of the messages submitted by the victims and the corresponding attributes assigned to those messages …
The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand
The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand
Geography ETDs
This research examines the attitudes and perceptions of residents in Catron County and Harding County, New Mexico regarding the Mexican gray wolf reintroduction program under the Endangered Species Act. Catron County is within the wolf recovery zone and residents must deal with consequences of having wolves in the area. Harding County is located on the opposite side of the state and is removed from the wolf reintroduction area. Understanding the perceived concerns and benefits of the wolf reintroduction program and if those concerns change based on geographic proximity to the reintroduction can reveal whether cultural biases or personal experience with …
Non-Federal/Federal Collaborators In Endangered Species Driven River Restoration: How Risk And Incentive Mobilize Institutional Supply In The Middle Rio Grand Endangered Species Collaborative Program, Mark Lawler
Geography ETDs
The Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Collaborative Program is an interagency, multiple-stakeholder organization, which works to enable cooperative solutions to endangered species issues on New Mexicos Middle Rio Grande. The Program is a product of what some authors describe as a 'new age' of environmental management. This study focuses on how local stakeholders interact with federal and state agencies within the Program to cooperatively invest in institutional changes to solve problems with tools of the 'new age' environmental management paradigm. It evaluates these tools in the context of pitfalls presented by dynamic interactions and an imbedded 'rule of law' regulatory …

Growing Home: Sacred Space And Contemporary Ecotopia, Andrew Goering Gingerich
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis investigates the concept of ecocentrism and how an emerging ecocentric worldview might uniquely shape the built environment. This thesis is particularly interested in the role of sacred space in urban development, and how the notion of sacredness, unique to an ecocentric worldview, might affect various aspects of the built environment. These issues are explored in two basic parts. First, three basic worldviews are discussed\u2014the pre-modern worldview, the modern worldview, and the emerging ecocentric worldview--specifically on the topics of nature, space, and the city. Second, a qualitative research study of three ecotopian' communities is presented--Village Homes in Davis, CA; …

Towards Developing Indicators Of Environmental Sustainability For Kathmandu, Nepal, Published Version, Ambika P. Adhikari
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
Sustainability is now considered one of the key objectives in urban planning. However, due to inappropriate planning, weak institutions, limitation of resources, and poor implementation of policies, many big cities in the developing countries have become even less environmentally, economically and socially sustainable than they were in the past. Historically, the Kathmandu valley enjoyed a unique tradition, rich heritage and a moderate state of sustainability in all areas, particularly in the environmental arena. However, the rapidly expanding and modernizing cities in the valley are facing serious problems of sustainability in all fronts: economic, social, environmental and ecological. Whereas environmental and …
The Effects Of Genetic Ancestry And Sociocultural Factors On Pulmonary Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Northeastern Mexico, Bonnie Nadyne Young
The Effects Of Genetic Ancestry And Sociocultural Factors On Pulmonary Tuberculosis Susceptibility In Northeastern Mexico, Bonnie Nadyne Young
Anthropology ETDs
Genetic and environmental factors contribute to variation in tuberculosis (TB) disease risk among individuals in the Americas, although the relative contribution of each of these factors remains unclear. Genetic ancestry may serve as a proxy for underlying genetic differences in TB risk between the European, Native American, and African groups that formed many populations in the Americas, but this has never been tested. Such tests are complicated by the fact that genetic ancestry and important potential social predictors of TB are usually confounded. The urban center of Nuevo León, the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA), presents a unique setting to tease …
