Increasing Nutritional Assessment For Inpatient Adolescents: A Quality Improvement Project, Karen Abich Carracedo, Kelsey Soppet, Melissa Sanchez
Increasing Nutritional Assessment For Inpatient Adolescents: A Quality Improvement Project, Karen Abich Carracedo, Kelsey Soppet, Melissa Sanchez
Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium
Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterized by severe disturbances in eating behaviors and associated with distressing emotions and thoughts. There are many subtypes with specific diagnostic thresholds. Major risk factors include female sex, age, low self-esteem, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, and genetic dysregulations. Prevalence data for American Adolescents is variable.
Currently, our institution does not have a consistent method for asking questions regarding nutrition and eating behaviors. The first step in identifying suspicious behaviors that could clue a provider into disordered eating is to ask questions regarding nutrition and eating behaviors in a standardized assessment.
For this quality improvement …

Referral Triage To Improve Neurology Access, Melinda Mata
Referral Triage To Improve Neurology Access, Melinda Mata
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
The demand for neurology consultation far outweighs the number of specialists, thus causing long wait-times for consultation. Other contributing factors to obtaining timely consultation include, quality of information sent with the referral, insurance authorization, triage process, and appointment availability. This retrospective quality improvement study explored the effects of a referral triage process on reducing appointment wait time. All referrals were sent to one fax number and a new standard referral and triage process was implemented with specific operators with defined roles and responsibilities. The initial results following intervention implementation did not show improvement in wait times. Comparing the new triage …
Standardization Of The Workflow For Collecting And Intervening On Social Determinant Of Health Data In A Community-Based Ambulatory Clinic, Tenzin Yangchen, Hamza Altaie, Ashten Duncan
Standardization Of The Workflow For Collecting And Intervening On Social Determinant Of Health Data In A Community-Based Ambulatory Clinic, Tenzin Yangchen, Hamza Altaie, Ashten Duncan
Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium
Problem identification: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are community-related social, economic, and physical conditions that influence patients’ health far in excess of what the direct provision of health care can achieve. Although the Joint Commission (TJC) recently published requirements for universal SDOH screening and intervention for accreditation purposes, many medical practices in New Mexico still have very low rates of screening and intervention, leading to suboptimal health outcomes for our patients. At CHRISTUS St. Vincent Family Medical Center in Santa Fe, the rates of SDOH screening and intervention have been around 2-3% based on current workflow processes and competing …
Aging And Learning: Community Engagemente And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Learners, Leticia Rinaldi Souza
Aging And Learning: Community Engagemente And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Learners, Leticia Rinaldi Souza
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
The elderly population (60 years or older) has been increasing during the past decades around the world and is expected to reach two billion by 2050 (Scult, Haime, et al 2015). However, the misconception that elderly people are uncapable, or incompetent is still part of the imaginary constructed around such populations (Minichiello and Coulson, 2005). Older adults present powerful functional capacities and social activities lead to better performance and slower decreases in their memory and executive function (Scott, Masser, & Pachana, 2020). Thus, second language learning plays an effective role in enabling active and regular engagement in social and psychological …

The Bias Of New Mexico Nurses In A Residency Program Toward People Experiencing Homelessness, Tolulope Kabir Fijabi
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
ABSTRACT
There is growing evidence that healthcare workers do not provide equivalent levels of care to patients of different social groups. This group includes the population of people experiencing homelessness and the number continues to grow simultaneously across U.S. Studies have also shown that the poor and the marginalized experiences disappointment in the healthcare industry due to negative attitudes such as stereotyping, bias, and prejudice from healthcare providers limiting them from accessing care when necessary. With growing research on the influence of the experience of trauma among people experiencing homelessness, there is a lack of trauma-informed services as it relates …

Civility Intervention In A Private Ambulatory Clinic, Steve D. Fusselman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Healthcare workers commonly face incivility in the workplace. This quality improvement project aimed to employ evidence-based practices to help improve self-perception about workplace civility using Dr. Cynthia Clark’s Workplace Civility Index (WCI)© 20-item Likert questionnaire and an educational intervention on civility. The impact of incivility in the workplace is undeniable, contributing to lower morale, absenteeism, decreased productivity, impaired communication, job burnout, and resignations. An exploratory factor analysis confirmed the reliability of WCI© as a beneficial instrument for measuring a company's capacity for civility. Finally, this project revealed that incorporating the WCI© with an educational intervention had a significant impact and …

This phenomenological study considered Socratic seminars and student perceptions. Research on Socratic seminars considers student achievement, but lacks students’ perspectives. This study’s purpose is to describe seminar participation for students at a Paideia School. Research questions include 1) “From the students’ perspectives, and based on their personal judgments and perceptions, what is it the lived experience for high school freshmen and sophomores who regularly participate in Socratic seminars?” and 2) “What effect does regular participation in Socratic seminars have on students’ perceptions of their own engagement in school?” Fourteen students were interviewed. Analysis yielded four themes: Open Exchange of Ideas …
Perceptions Of Nursing Staff On Restraint Alternatives, Adelia S. Perea
Perceptions Of Nursing Staff On Restraint Alternatives, Adelia S. Perea
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Physical restraint is often used as a nursing intervention for patients with behavioral issues despite current evidence that indicates their use is actually more harmful than helpful. Nursing staff at UNMH are required by policy to use other methods such as restraint alternatives before placing patients in restraint. However, they do not have the necessary resources or tools to comply with the policy. The NPCU conducted a quality improvement project that introduced 5 restraint alternatives followed by a survey focused on nursing perceptions. The results revealed 2 alternatives (Gamewright GoPOP sensory toy & Playtivity sensory disc) were perceived by nursing …
The Manito Topos Project: Place Naming And Toponymic Silencing In The Sierras Of Northern Nuevo México And Southern Colorado, Len N. Beké
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation reports on documentary research on vernacular toponymies in Manito communities in Nuevo México and Colorado. These toponymies are erased, obscured and delegitimized in official maps. Within the study area, vernacular antecedents for 49.5% of official names for natural features were documented, along with 280 previously unmapped names. These data were compared to the state-sanctioned toponymy to determine a typology of linguistic mechanisms of toponymic silencing. While a majority of official toponyms are based on Manito oral tradition, only 15.4% of the labels for natural features represent unaltered versions of names in that tradition. This dissertation theorizes the conceptual …

A Reconfigurable Architecture For Matrix Multiplication For Low Power Applications, Jeffrey Love
A Reconfigurable Architecture For Matrix Multiplication For Low Power Applications, Jeffrey Love
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis presents a hardware architecture for performing matrix multiplication via a systolic array to reduce time complexity and power consumption. The proposed architecture, the Neural Network Accelerator (NNA), was designed in Verilog HDL to perform 8-bit multiplication to reduce the resources required to implement the NNA on low-power FPGAs. The NNA’s open architecture is designed to support radiation test for fault tolerant designs targeting space applications. Commercial hardware architecture information is not public knowledge, which led us to build our own matrix multiplication architecture so that we could later study its feasibility for space applications.
The NNA was compared …
The Quantum Computational Utility Of Symmetry-Protected Topological Order: From Near-Term Advantages To Universal Measurement-Based Quantum Computing, Austin Kevin Daniel
The Quantum Computational Utility Of Symmetry-Protected Topological Order: From Near-Term Advantages To Universal Measurement-Based Quantum Computing, Austin Kevin Daniel
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Quantum computers offer new avenues to approach difficult problems by taking advantage of the strange and often nonintuitive phenomena present in quantum physics. Though many quantum algorithms are believed or known to outperform the best known classical algorithms, the fundamental mechanism granting them their power remains elusive. In measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC), two key resources have been show to enable universal and provably nonclassical quantum computations, respectively. These are symmetry-protected topological order (SPTO), a notion describing a class of quantum magnets with hidden long-range correlations in their entanglement structure, and quantum contextuality, the fact that a quantum measurement outcome inherently …
Multi-Factor Disturbance Regimes Drive Soil Fungal Community Composition Across A Southwestern Us Riparian Cottonwood Landscape, Rich Wagner
Biology ETDs
In southwestern US riparian cottonwood forests, anthropogenic changes have replaced the structuring force of seasonal flooding with novel multi-factor disturbance regimes, driving these ecosystems to new states. While the impetus for restoration is high, little attention has been paid to understanding belowground feedbacks from these new drivers. Using high-throughput sequencing of environmental DNA, we compared the impacts of fires, exotic plants, restoration practices and lower levels of disturbance on soil fungal community composition and diversity across a riparian cottonwood landscape in New Mexico. We focused on mycorrhizal fungi for the benefits they may confer upon cottonwoods. We found that along …
Transcriptional Regulation Of Stem Cell Function In The Drosophila Central Nervous System, Amalia S. Parra
Transcriptional Regulation Of Stem Cell Function In The Drosophila Central Nervous System, Amalia S. Parra
Biology ETDs
Development of multicellular organisms depends on coordination of various molecular mechanisms to ensure proper tissue size and structure. This is accomplished through intrinsic and extrinsic cues that regulate cell growth and proliferation both spatially and temporally. These well-coordinated signals are present from early developmental stages and remain active throughout development to ensure tissue structure is appropriate for function. This is particularly important in early cell types that form specialized lineages such as stem cells or those found throughout the body such as epithelia. While much progress has been made in understanding growth regulatory mechanisms, several fundamental aspects remain unknown. This …
Deformation At Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia: Modeling The Effect Of Volatile Movement In The Hydrothermal System, Karissa Rosenberger
Deformation At Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia: Modeling The Effect Of Volatile Movement In The Hydrothermal System, Karissa Rosenberger
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Deformation at volcanos is often a precursor to an eruption, but sometimes volcanos experience uplift without actually erupting. Determining the mechanisms behind this deformation and whether it will lead to an eruption is an important part of understanding volcanic systems. Uturuncu volcano in Bolivia has been experiencing deformation for decades, but the last time it erupted was 250,000 years ago. The reason behind this deformation is unknown, but one possible cause is volatiles moving into the hydrothermal system and getting trapped, causing the volume to increase and the surface to uplift. To test this hypothesis, the current volume change of …

Reading As A Social Practice: Using Retrospective Miscue Analysis To Understand Kichwa-Spanish Bilinguals’ Meaning Construction, Sandra Leonor Cabrera Moreno
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Meaning construction is a complex concept that encapsulates language and thought as a whole system in which sense and meaning have a unique relationship highly marked by the social and cultural environment of the reader. Hence, Kichwa-Spanish bilinguals’ reading practices in the Southern Andes of Ecuador cannot be discussed as two separate processes but as an integrated structure embedded in a speech community. This perspective of the bilingual mind is founded on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of learning in which language is a psychological tool that shapes and is shaped by our modes of thinking. This unification is a complex process …

Eco-Anxiety And Heteronormativity In Dystopian Novels, Léa M. Briere
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
For marginalized communities, such as women and queer individuals, survival in their environment has always been a matter of adapting to social norms and expectations. However, the challenges have become even more complex in the face of climate change and environmental catastrophes, which often affect these communities disproportionately. While modern dystopian stories often evoke eco-anxiety by portraying societies at the mercy of their environment, Michelle Tea and Wendy Delorme have found an opportunity to break free from societal norms and heteronormative expectations in the speculative worlds they create in Black Wave (2015) and Viendra le temps du feu (2021), respectively. …

Deictic Pointing And Demonstrative Usage In American Sign Language, Paul Twitchell
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
American Sign Language (ASL), like many different signed languages, has a systematic way of using pointing signs for multiple types of nominal reference. Possibly the most basic function of pointing is to indicate, direct and modulate reference to physical objects located in proximal and distal areas called exophoric demonstratives.
This study aims to investigate ASL exophoric demonstratives and how ASL fits within the different typological systems of demonstratives that have been documented (Diessel & Coventry, 2020). Several research questions focus on how signers direct attention to proximal and distal referents in ASL using an elicitation task. The two studies (adult …
