This essay is based on the premise that there exists a general orderly pattern of innermost values constantly present throughout time and events.

The atomic world had the same architectural structure as the Universe, but the molecular interactions form the different substances which have properties characteristic of their own. Under a similar pattern, the writer found a universal harmony in the Spanish lyrical expression, which shows itself in valid and fruitful relationships. Eduardo Barrios experimented at various stages in his career with the diary form as a basis of his fictions. This narrative frame, utilizing the language of speech, provided him with a form within which he could explore the aspects of human experience and personality that most interested him. The theme of jealousy, which had occurred in earlier works, comes to be the central theme of the novel Los hombres del hombre and, through the inherent intimacy of the diary form, generates the self-scrutiny of the protagonist. The death of Honoré de Balzac in 1850 left a void in the production of masterpieces of the French novel. During the next decade, the lack of a dominant literary school, with precise rules, afforded to a great variety of authors a period of experimentation toward the establishment of a new direction for the novel.

The cooperative creation of Jules and Edmond de Goncourt emerged from this indecisive period. Throughout the ten years, the two brothers dabbled in various media of expression--painting, history, art criticism, drama-but their primary importance resides in their innovations in the novel. The general objective of this research was to make certain predictions concerning occupational values from the cultural values of the three major ethnic groups represented in northern New Mexico—Anglo, Spanish-American, and Indian. A corollary to this main purpose was an investigation of the effect of maturation and sex upon occupational values. The research problem, then, centered upon analyzing differences in patterns of occupational values among various categories of individuals.

This study, which grew out of an interest in the recurrent theme of multiple personality in the prose of Miguel de Unamuno, first attempts to define multiple personality in the scientific fields of psychology and psychiatry, subsequently examines depictions of multiple personality in world literature, and finally studies in depth the manifestations of the phenomenon in selected works of Unamuno. Multiple personality in psychology and psychiatry is defined beginning with an examination of the behavioristic, mechanistic-adjustive, and holistic-dynamic approaches to personality theory. Attention is then given to the contributions of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler to personality theory. …

The Effects Of Type Of Reinforcer On Several Lower-Class Cultural Groups., Irene D. Hassett

Seventy-two is (half males, half females) from each of four lower-class cultural groups, i.e., Anglo, Black, Spanish-American, and Navaho, were randomly assig ed to four reward conditions: money, candy, personal-praise, and performance-directed-praise. Each S was given a 10-minute marble dropping task, in which the third minute was designated as the baseline. D ring minutes four through ten, two response measures were derived for each S: rate of response, and a reinforcer effectiveness score. The Hippolyte of Mathieu Bidar has nos been reprinted since the original edition of 1675, nor has there been a modern critical edition. The desire to do a critical edition of this tragedy was prompted by the prevalence of the theme of Phaedra and Hippolytus, which has been presented repeatedly on the French stage, and because of the editor’s interest in the role that the Greek tradition played in the French classicalism of the seventeenth century. Copies of Bidar’s Hippolyte are rare, since only three are known to be extant. The manuscript used is a copy of the original edition, …

Nineteen hundred and sixty one was a year of signal importance in the career of Jorge Luis Borges. On May 1, 1961 he was awarded, jointly with Samuel Beckett, the Prix International des Editeurs. Later that same year he published Antología personal, a forty-nine piece selection of his own work dictated by personal preference, which by the fact of selection is important for an appreciation of his work. It is the purpose of this thesis to delineate the concept of flexibility as a tool for the analysis of non-literate social systems. Despite the frequent use of the descriptive term "flexible" in discussion of ethnographic case materials, the potential analytic significance of the concept has not been examined systematically. The initial portion of the thesis is concerned with an examination of the term "flexibility" in various contexts of ethnographic usage. In all cases it is found to refer to a system characterized by the feature of optional or alternative possibilities for interpersonal or group relationships. It is hypothesized that …

The Pueblo group of the southwest has probably been given more study than any other culture group of North America. Both functional and historical studies have been made, and faint attempts set forth, to deduce the origin of the modern Pueblo culture, as a whole, from the prehistoric Pueblo culture studied by archaeologists. Theories regarding this origin have varied somewhat during the last ten years, but relatively little attempt has been made to check detailed archaeological or ethnological material of any of the Pueblo groups with data on other groups outside the area.
