Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), the leading known cause of childhood developmental disability, has long-lasting effects extending throughout the lifespan. It is well documented that children prenatally exposed to alcohol have difficulties inhibiting behavior and sustaining attention. Thus, the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART), a Go/No-go paradigm, is especially well suited to assess the behavioral and neural functioning characteristics of children with PAE. In this study, we utilized neuropsychological assessment, parent/guardian questionnaires, and magnetoencephalography during SART random and fixed orders to assess characteristics of children 8-12 years old prenatally exposed to alcohol compared to typically developing children. Compared to neurotypical …

City Of Santa Fe's Offset Program: A Comprehensive Demand Analysis And Program Review, Francesca Shirley Oct 2023

City Of Santa Fe's Offset Program: A Comprehensive Demand Analysis And Program Review, Francesca Shirley

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In principle, Development Water Offset programs (offset programs) are designed to allow for urban growth without increasing water demand. Offset programs necessitate a reduction in existing water demand, typically achieved through plumbing retrofits, equal to the expected new demand, resulting in a net zero increase in water use. The City of Santa Fe (Santa Fe) has administered an offset program since 2002. The program banks water saved from its retrofit rebate programs. The banked water savings, known as Conservation Credits, can then be purchased by developers, and dedicated to new development projects. Under the water bank model, new demand has …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

During the onset of neuropathic pain from a variety of etiologies, nociceptors become hypersensitized, releasing neurotransmitters and other factors from centrally-projecting nerve terminals within the dorsal spinal cord. Consequently, glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) in the spinal cord are activated and mediate the release of proinflammatory cytokines that act to enhance pain transmission and sensitize mechanical non-nociceptive fibers which ultimately results in light touch hypersensitivity, clinically observed as allodynia. Pramipexole, a D2/D3 preferring agonist, is FDA-approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and demonstrates efficacy in animal models of inflammatory pain. The clinical-stage investigational drug, R(+) enantiomer of pramipexole, dexpramipexole, …

Dectin-1 Multimerization And Signaling Depends On Fungal Β-Glucan Structure And Exposure, Eduardo U. Anaya, Akram Etemadi Amin, Michael J. Wester, Michael E. Danielson, Kyle S. Michel, Aaron K. Neumann Sep 2023

Dectin-1 Multimerization And Signaling Depends On Fungal Β-Glucan Structure And Exposure, Eduardo U. Anaya, Akram Etemadi Amin, Michael J. Wester, Michael E. Danielson, Kyle S. Michel, Aaron K. Neumann

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Dectin-1A is a C-type lectin innate immunoreceptor that recognizes β-(1,3;1,6)-glucan, a structural component of Candida species cell walls. β-Glucans can adopt solution structures ranging from random coil to insoluble fiber due to tertiary (helical) and quaternary structure. Fungal β-glucans of medium and high molecular weight are highly structured, but low molecular weight glucan is much less structured. Despite similar affinity for Dectin-1, the ability of glucans to induce Dectin-1A-mediated signaling correlates with degree of structure. Glucan denaturation experiments showed that glucan structure determines agonistic potential, but not receptor binding affinity. We explored the impact of glucan structure on molecular aggregation …

Atypical Squamous Verrucous Lesions Of The Oral Cavity: Challenges In Interpretation Of Small Incisional Biopsies, Ryland Richards, Shweta Agarwal Sep 2023

Atypical Squamous Verrucous Lesions Of The Oral Cavity: Challenges In Interpretation Of Small Incisional Biopsies, Ryland Richards, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Squamous verrucous proliferative lesions of oral cavity can pose a diagnostic challenge for the general pathologist, especially on small biopsies. The superficial nature of incisional biopsies and inconsistent histologic terminologies used for these lesions contribute to often-discrepant clinical diagnosis, resulting in delayed treatment. This study aims to explore the proliferative squamous lesions of oral cavity, correlate biopsy & resection diagnoses, and evaluate possible reasons for discrepant diagnosis (if any).

DESIGN: A retrospective review of oral verrucous squamous lesions was undertaken. Pathology database was searched for oral cavity biopsies from January2018 through August2022 with the keywords: atypical, verrucous, squamous, and …

Syntheses And Characterization Of Photoactive Ruthenium And Iron Polypyridyl Complexes, Rajani Thapa Magar Sep 2023

Syntheses And Characterization Of Photoactive Ruthenium And Iron Polypyridyl Complexes, Rajani Thapa Magar

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Within this dissertation, two distinct classes of metal complexes have been discussed that bear significance in the field of solar energy conversion, photo redox catalysis and memory devices. The first class of the metal complexes is a series of photochromic Ruthenium polypyridyl N-heterocyclic carbene tethered sulfoxide complexes that are reported to undergo unusually slow isomerization from S-bonded to O-bonded and unusually fast thermal reversion from O-bonded to S-bonded configuration. The role of NHC in the excited state dynamics of these complexes have been discussed in detail in Chapter 3.

For the first time in two decades, structural information of the …

The Impact Of Postresettlement Stressors And Access To Health Care On Health Outcomes In Recently Resettled Refugees In The United States, David T. Lardier, Julia Hess, Lucas Winter, Jessica R. Goodkind Aug 2023

The Impact Of Postresettlement Stressors And Access To Health Care On Health Outcomes In Recently Resettled Refugees In The United States, David T. Lardier, Julia Hess, Lucas Winter, Jessica R. Goodkind

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

This mixed-methods study examines mechanisms connecting the deployment of economic, social, and health care resources to emotional distress and physical health outcomes. Examining such mechanisms is critical for informing strategies, policies, and other interventions for reducing health disparities and improving refugee health in the United States and other resettlement contexts. Data for this study were collected as part of a randomized control trial in a mid-sized city in the Southwestern United States. Two-hundred ninety recently resettled (< 3 years) refugee adults from 143 households were enrolled in the study (36.2% Afghan, 32.8% Iraqi/Syrian, and 31.0% Great Lakes African; 52% women). Qualitative interview data were collected via semistructured interviews. A longitudinal structural equation path model of quantitative data from three time points over 12 months tested hypotheses that emerged from qualitative findings. In semistructured interviews, refugees in the United States (a) attributed the development of worse or new physical health problems to postresettlement stressors related to financial instability and limited social support that contributed to their emotional distress and (b) reported several barriers to accessing health care in the United States, including insufficient knowledge of health care resources, inadequate patient-provider communication, and navigating complex American health insurance systems, all of which exacerbated their physical health problems. Guided by these qualitative findings, longitudinal quantitative data revealed that: (a) postmigration stressors were associated with emotional distress and poor self-reported physical health, (b) emotional distress mediated the association between postmigration stressors and global health satisfaction, and (c) emotional distress was negatively associated with global health satisfaction. Findings document stressors refugees experience in the context of the unique environment created by the American health care system and how these stressors contribute to poor physical health through increased emotional distress.
