Theories Of Reflection In Indian Philosophy And Jacques Lacan, Dimitry Shevchenko Jun 2018

Theories Of Reflection In Indian Philosophy And Jacques Lacan, Dimitry Shevchenko

Philosophy ETDs

In this dissertation I study the analogy of reflection in a mirror as a device used frequently in Indian philosophical traditions to solve the problem of the interaction between consciousness and matter. This problem, discussed both in Indian and Western philosophy, concerns the nature of the interaction between the seemingly incompatible dimensions of subjective experience and objective matter. In Indian philosophy, the essential idea is that, just as a face and its properties are reflected in a mirror and appear to belong to it, so are consciousness and its properties, such as the sense of self, subjectivity, and the experience …

Investigation Of Molluscan Survivorship Across The Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary Event Using Ecological Niche Modeling, Agathe E. Carrier Jun 2018

Investigation Of Molluscan Survivorship Across The Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary Event Using Ecological Niche Modeling, Agathe E. Carrier

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

In the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, the Western Interior Seaway experienced the effects of a global ocean anoxic event (OAE2, or the Bonarelli Event) across the Cenomanian-Turonian (C/T) boundary (~94 Ma). This event resulted in major environmental and biological disturbances creating significant biotic turnover, with recent research suggesting near mass extinction levels in some clades. In this study we utilize a paleobiological application of a modern ecological modeling technique (PaleoENM), to test whether changes in species’ survivorship and distribution patterns across this event relate to changes in their predicted suitable habitat area and abiotic niche dimensions.

Results suggest that …

Studying Egfr Signaling Through Single Molecule Imaging And Computational Modeling, Emanuel Salazar Cavazos Jun 2018

Studying Egfr Signaling Through Single Molecule Imaging And Computational Modeling, Emanuel Salazar Cavazos

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Signaling through the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) plays an important role in both physiological and cancer-related processes. In this work, single-molecule microscopy measurements and computational modeling were closely integrated to better understand the mechanisms that regulate EGFR signaling. Technical improvements were made over the previously described Single-Molecule Pull-down (SiMPull) assay to facilitate direct detection of the phosphorylation state of thousands of individual receptors, and thereby estimate both the fraction of receptors phosphorylated at specific tyrosine residues and the frequency of multisite phosphorylation. These improvements enabled the first direct detection of multisite phosphorylation on full-length Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), …

Urban Animals: Gis Analysis Of Stray Canines And Felines In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Courtney Brock

Geography ETDs

While human influence and progress has shaped the cityscape of Albuquerque, New Mexico, many stray animals also consider this city to be their home. Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department holds a human responsibility over these urban animals and their habitat displacement, requiring them to either be registered and owned or euthanized. Although animal rights are a topic continually in debate, the habitat choices made by stray animals are rarely questioned, due to anthropocentrism in the city’s structure and laws.

Through observational field research with Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Officers, stray animal locations were collected throughout the city for one week in July …

Evaluating Differences In Drink Refusal Training And Posttreatment Outcomes In Women In Individual Alcohol Treatment, Rosa Munoz Jun 2018

Evaluating Differences In Drink Refusal Training And Posttreatment Outcomes In Women In Individual Alcohol Treatment, Rosa Munoz

Psychology ETDs

This study sought to establish the topography of drink refusal behaviors clients engage in while undergoing manual-guided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). Prior research has demonstrated that clients who receive specific skills training on how to assertively refuse drinks are less likely to relapse. Behavioral coding has been used previously to explore in-session behaviors by both client and therapist. Using this methodology, a coding manual (Drink Refusal and Motivation-Alcohol; DRAM-A) was developed for the present study. We sought to explore the relationship between differential types of drink refusal behaviors uttered by clients receiving treatment for AUD …

Systematics And Diversification Of The Pantropical Avian Order Coraciiformes, Jenna Merle Mccullough Jun 2018

Systematics And Diversification Of The Pantropical Avian Order Coraciiformes, Jenna Merle Mccullough

Biology ETDs

How and why species diversify is a central theme of evolutionary biology. Species-rich, morphologically diverse, pantropical clades provide rare opportunities to explore questions about drivers of diversification in the tropics. Here, we present the first complete species tree of Coraciiformes (6 families, ~177 species of kingfishers, motmots, bee-eaters, and allies), produced with thousands of ultraconserved elements. We recovered a well-supported tree which shows that there are two clades within Coraciiformes: 1) bee-eaters sister to rollers + ground- rollers and 2) todies sister to motmots + kingfishers. We estimated the biogeographical history of the group, explored bill shape evolution with a …

Fixing Deference In Youth Crimmigration Cases, Esther K. Hong Jun 2018

Fixing Deference In Youth Crimmigration Cases, Esther K. Hong

New Mexico Law Review

This Article focuses on a type of judicial deference that uniquely appears in immigration cases of non-citizen minors and young adults who have adult-ish state offense findings: state adult convictions imposed while they were minors, and state youthful offender findings. Deference, as revealed in these immigration cases, is an independent analytical tool that the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal courts use to presumptively accept the judgment or law of the state or federal government, even if the act goes against the statutes or policies of the other. Specifically, in immigration cases involving state youthful offender findings, the BIA and …

Cheers! Ending Quill . . . What Can Be Learned From The Wine Industry, Alyson Outenreath Jun 2018

Cheers! Ending Quill . . . What Can Be Learned From The Wine Industry, Alyson Outenreath

New Mexico Law Review

In today’s age of technology, does it really matter where we are physically present? For example, a person in rural Montana can buy items online, just as if that person were in a brick-and-mortar store in New York City or San Francisco. An Internet business having employees and offices only in Chicago could sell products to customers located in all 50 states. If physical presence has become a bygone of the past, then why still talk about it? The answer is the 1992 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Quill Corp. v. North Dakota. Quill involved whether an out-of-state office supply …

Of Remand And Responsibility: Oakey V. May Maple Pharmacy And The Pharmacist’S Professional Standard Of Care In New Mexico, Paul Michael Roybal

New Mexico Law Review

Reports of the United States’ prescription drug overdose epidemic abound in news media. In an effort to curb this epidemic, several entities have been subject to lawsuits, including pharmaceutical manufacturers and doctors. However, pharmacists remain protected in the majority of jurisdictions by a restricted professional standard of care. The pharmacist’s professional standard of care in New Mexico was a question of first impression when it reached the Court of Appeals in Oakey v. May Maple Pharmacy, but the case was remanded back to the district court so that each party’s expert could further develop a standard. Thus, the question is …

Amount-In-Controversy In The Tenth Circuit: Providing A Corporate Defendant Even More Power Under Cafa, Isaac Leon Jun 2018

Amount-In-Controversy In The Tenth Circuit: Providing A Corporate Defendant Even More Power Under Cafa, Isaac Leon

New Mexico Law Review

Prior to the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (“CAFA”), diversity jurisdiction was the manner used by defendants to remove class action lawsuits to federal court. However, class action plaintiffs were able to overcome federal jurisdiction and remain in certain state courts that were thought to provide certain advantages. Due to this perceived threat of abuse of this procedural vehicle, Congress sought to expand federal jurisdiction for class action lawsuits that may affect interstate commerce and national policy. Generally speaking, CAFA provided federal courts subject matter jurisdiction over class action lawsuits where the amount-in-controversy exceeds $5,000,000 and there is minimal …

Let’S Call The Poll Thing Off: Partial Verdict Forms As A More Reliable Way To Enforce The Double Jeopardy Clause When Juries Deadlock On Counts With Lesser Included Offenses, Ben Osborn Jun 2018

Let’S Call The Poll Thing Off: Partial Verdict Forms As A More Reliable Way To Enforce The Double Jeopardy Clause When Juries Deadlock On Counts With Lesser Included Offenses, Ben Osborn

New Mexico Law Review

The practice of charging lesser included offenses often leads juries to acquit on some levels of a given count but deadlock on others, but many states do not give effect to such acquittals and instead record only the deadlock for the entire count. Because the Double Jeopardy Clause only attaches to formally recorded verdicts, defendants’ double jeopardy rights will thus often depend on whether and how a jury is afforded the opportunity to give effect to such partial acquittals. Some states expressly forbid such partial acquittals, a practice deemed constitutional by the United States Supreme Court. New Mexico not only …

The Support Needs Of First Generation Immigrant Families With Sons And Daughters With Disabilities, George Jacob May 2018

The Support Needs Of First Generation Immigrant Families With Sons And Daughters With Disabilities, George Jacob

Special Education ETDs

This study examined the support needs of four first generation immigrant families with sons and daughters with disabilities from a city in the South West of the United States and gave them a voice to add to the knowledge base that can inform the development of supports and policies for families. Parents talked about their separation from extended families and being alone in an unfamiliar country without knowledge and information on how to raise a child with a disability. Spouse and children were the closest forms of support, but for a single parent, the needs multiplied. All families shared the …

"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend May 2018

"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Scholarly and popular sources are a longstanding construct in library instruction. A quick Google search brings up an abundance of LibGuides and tutorials on the subject. However, we have found that teaching students to identify and classify information sources using a rigid binary categorization is problematic. In an effort to better understand the ways students conceptualize and evaluate sources, we stepped back to ask: what kind of reasoning do students apply when distinguishing between scholarly and popular sources?

Emotion And Metacognitive Monitoring: The Role Of Emotion In The Development Of Learning Beliefs, Robert Craig Hoy May 2018

Emotion And Metacognitive Monitoring: The Role Of Emotion In The Development Of Learning Beliefs, Robert Craig Hoy

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Educators have daily experience with how students' emotional states influence their behaviors and levels of motivation. What is more poorly understood and even counterintuitive in effect is the subtler role of emotion in the role of metacognitive monitoring in the form of learning belief development. The research driving current understanding in this area is limited and fragmented across disciplines. The purpose of the current quantitative, cross-sectional study was to contribute to our understanding of the role that emotion plays in metacognitive monitoring. The study used self-report measures given before and after a video-based learning task. Metrics included measures of emotional …

Neurocognitive Markers Of Cognitive Control In Schizophrenia And Functional Outcomes, Sephira Ryman May 2018

Neurocognitive Markers Of Cognitive Control In Schizophrenia And Functional Outcomes, Sephira Ryman

Psychology ETDs

Impaired cognitive function results in decreased objective quality of life and community functioning in schizophrenia, resulting in the largest indirect costs from the disease. Disrupted proactive cognitive control, a form of early selection and active goal maintenance, is hypothesized to underlie the broad cognitive deficits observed in patients with schizophrenia. The current study utilized novel electrophysiological (EEG) analytic approach to examine proactive and reactive cognitive control deficits in schizophrenia patients. Behavioral results highlight that patients exhibited a general reduction in reaction time across two multisensory cognitive control tasks, with selective deficits on proactive conditions relative to reactive conditions. The relative …

Automated Development Of Semantic Data Models Using Scientific Publications, Martha O. Perez-Arriaga May 2018

Automated Development Of Semantic Data Models Using Scientific Publications, Martha O. Perez-Arriaga

Computer Science ETDs

The traditional methods for analyzing information in digital documents have evolved with the ever-increasing volume of data. Some challenges in analyzing scientific publications include the lack of a unified vocabulary and a defined context, different standards and formats in presenting information, various types of data, and diverse areas of knowledge. These challenges hinder detecting, understanding, comparing, sharing, and querying information rapidly.

I design a dynamic conceptual data model with common elements in publications from any domain, such as context, metadata, and tables. To enhance the models, I use related definitions contained in ontologies and the Internet. Therefore, this dissertation generates …

Characterization Of Wideband U-Slot Patch Antennas Through Characteristic Modal Analysis And Coupled Mode Theory, Tyler Lapointe May 2018

Characterization Of Wideband U-Slot Patch Antennas Through Characteristic Modal Analysis And Coupled Mode Theory, Tyler Lapointe

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) are utilized in many applications as they are easy to produce and are thin, versatile, light weight, cheap, and reliable. One of the drawbacks of MPAs, however, is their narrow bandwidth, typically three to ten percent. Fortunately, a perturbation exists capable of resolving this issue known as the U-slot which can increase the operational bandwidth of a single layer MPA to around 30 percent. Often it is reported that the wideband performance of this structure results from the existence of two resonators, the patch and the U-shaped slot. While this is true, the very nature of …

On Improved Accuracy Chirp Parameter Estimation Using The Dfrft With Application To Sar-Based Vibrometry, Satish Mandal May 2018

On Improved Accuracy Chirp Parameter Estimation Using The Dfrft With Application To Sar-Based Vibrometry, Satish Mandal

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform (DFRFT) has in recent years, become a useful tool for multicomponent chirp signal analysis. Chirp signals are transformed into spectral peaks in the chirp rate versus center frequency representation, whose coordinates are related to the underlying chirp parameters via a computed empirical peak to parameter mapping incorporated into the Santhanam-Peacock algorithm.

In this thesis, we attempt to quantify the accuracy of the DFRFT approach by first studying the discretization error sources that arise from the transitioning of the continuous FRFT to DFRFT. Then, we refine prior work by Ishwor Bhatta to develop analytical expressions for …

The Effect Of Acute Aerobic Exercise And Rapamycin Treatment On Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response In Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Of Prediabetics, James Jermey Mccormick

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Objectives: Recently, a malfunction of the autophagic pathway has been implicated with impaired glucose metabolism and progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. Further, an interconnection has been suggested between the autophagy and heat shock protein (HSP) systems. The aims of the present study were to investigate the effects of exercise and rapamycin treatment (RAPA) on the autophagic process and HSP in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from prediabetics compared to controls. Methods: Two groups matched for age and sex served as subjects and consisted of six prediabetic (42.4±11.7) and six controls (44.4±11.9). Subjects exercised at 50% of VO2max for …

How Brief Motivational Interventions Impact Math Beliefs In Undergraduate University Students, Ayesha Lynn Livingston Phd May 2018

How Brief Motivational Interventions Impact Math Beliefs In Undergraduate University Students, Ayesha Lynn Livingston Phd

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Despite best efforts, students in U.S. schools still underperform in mathematics compared to many other developed countries, and the achievement gap persists. Teachers play a most important role in student success, yet the knowledge about adult beliefs (and how they can be changed) concerning one’s ability to learn math, the value one has for math, and one’s understanding about how math anxiety derails learning still falls short in informing efforts to best train/support pre-service or in-service teachers. A group of undergraduate university students (N=123) participated in a fully online intervention measuring each of the components in the Expectancy-Value-Cost (EVC) motivational …
