Comparison Of Methodologies Of Using Colorimetry To Detect Low Concentrations Of Bromide As A Hydrologic Tracer, Emily Wolf
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The objective of this research was to compare colorimetric methods for measuring low concentrations of bromide in natural waters. The bromide ion has long been used as a tracer to study hydrodynamic processes and properties. Its conservative nature makes it ideal as a tracer. Bromide is almost entirely immune to loss from a solution via adsorption on rocks and sediments, or reaction with other solutes present in the water. Using three methodologies to use colorimetry in the detection of bromide, I analyzed samples taken from the Gila River, Jemez Creek, and the Rio Grande after injections of sodium bromide were …

Comparison Of A Flipped Classroom To A Traditional Format In A Critical Care Curriculum, Erik Kraai, Shozab Ahmed, Benjamin Deaton, Tyler Shackelford, Michel Boivin
HSC Education Days
Medical education has seen a paradigm shift away from traditional lecture-based teaching towards learner-centered strategies such as problem-based learning and the flipped classroom. The intensive care unit (ICU) poses unique challenges as a learning environment and teaching is complicated by high clinical demands, duty hour restrictions, and unpredictable schedules. The flipped or inverted classroom utilizes pre-class videos to deliver content to the learner prior to in-class sessions that apply fundamental concepts. The potential benefits of the flipped classroom method include the ability of learners to learn new material at their own pace outside the classroom and to engage in active …
The Parietal Notch: A Surgical Landmark For Students Learning Mastoid Surgery, Michael Castle, Bradley Pickett
The Parietal Notch: A Surgical Landmark For Students Learning Mastoid Surgery, Michael Castle, Bradley Pickett
HSC Education Days
Mastoidectomy is a procedural skill that must be mastered by otolaryngology residents to perform otologic surgery. Surgical exposure of the middle and inner ear through the mastoid using cadaveric specimens is a standard simulation method to teach three-dimensional anatomy of the ear to residents. Neurovascular structures, sensory organs and minute components of the hearing apparatus are hidden inside dense bone, and therefore, exposing these delicate features is challenging. Landmarks on the mastoid surface guide the initial dissection, using a drill, allowing the operator to identify deeper landmarks. For novice surgeons, these landmarks are critical to perform safe otologic surgery. We …
Oxygen And Silver-Oxygen Defects In Ge2se3 Electrochemical Metallization Bridge Memristors, Jau-Tzuoo Chen
Oxygen And Silver-Oxygen Defects In Ge2se3 Electrochemical Metallization Bridge Memristors, Jau-Tzuoo Chen
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations of oxygen and silver defects in a crystalline model of amorphous Ge2Se3. We studied defects arising from atomic oxygen and dioxygen, as well as interstitial silver and silver displacing germanium, following Campbell's conjecture on the mechanism of dendrite formation. For oxygen defect concentrations below 2%, we show that O2 dissociates in Ge2Se3, oxygen atoms are immobile, and oxygen atoms do not cluster. Within this model, the most preferred oxygen defect in intrinsic Ge2Se3 is Ge-O-Ge bridge. We conclude that oxygen defects …

A Derivation Of Fluidic Maxwell-Proca Equations For Electrodynamics Of Superconductors & Its Implication To Chiral Cosmology Model, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Mario Liu described a hydrodynamic Maxwell equations [3] and, also discussed potential implications of these new approaches to superconductors which were made after Tajmar’s paper [4]. In this paper, we present for the first time a derivation of fluidic Maxwell-Proca equations. The name of fluidic Maxwell-Proca is proposed because the equations were based on modifying Maxwell-Proca and Hirsch’s theory of electrodynamics of superconductor. It is hoped that this paper may stimulate further investigations and experiments in superconductor. It may be expected to have some impact to cosmology modeling too, for instance we consider a hypothetical argument that photon mass can …

Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler
Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler
Architecture and Planning ETDs
In New Mexico and much of the American Southwest, ensuring clean, reliable, and sustainable drinking water supplies is one of the most significant planning challenges. One option to create more diverse and reliable water supplies is potable water reuse. There are two types of potable water reuse: indirect and direct potable reuse (IPR and DPR). Planned potable water reuse has not been widely implemented, largely due to negative public perceptions. This research involves the design and implementation of a large-scale survey administered to a sample of 4,000 water utility customers in Albuquerque, NM, to examine public acceptance of potable water …
Lipid Species Assignment - Corrections, Omar Holguin
Lipid Species Assignment - Corrections, Omar Holguin
Energize New Mexico (NSF EPSCoR Track 1 IV)
Metabolic response to four suboptimal cultivation temperatures was explored in Nannochloropsis salina, with an emphasis on fatty acid and lipid metabolism. Cultures were cultivated in controlled environmental photobioreactors. Physiological performance, characterized by growth rate and photosynthetic output, were reduced at all three cold stress temperatures (5 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees Celsius, 15 degrees Celsius). However, biomass productivity and overall growth for cultures at 20 degrees Celsius was like that of those grown at the optimal temperature (25 degrees Celsius). Fatty acid productivity was elevated at all suboptimal temperatures, and both total fatty acid and eicosapentaenoic acid content were statically elevated …

Hemocyanin-Like 1 Protein, Unique To Planorbid Snails, Supports Reproductive Output Of Biomphalaria Glabrata, Vector Of Schistosomiasis, Janeth Julieta Peña
Biology ETDs
The Neotropical freshwater snail, Biomphalaria glabrata is a major intermediate host of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, causative agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis. Disease control efforts consist mainly of mass drug treatment but it is recognized that targeting of the snail vector is essential to prevent parasite transmission that leads to rapid (re)infections. This dissertation combines the knowledge of basic snail biology with modern molecular techniques including protein analysis, next-generation sequencing, proteomics, qRT-PCR and RNA interference to: (1) characterize hemocyanin-like genes in B. glabrata, in particular with further description of the egg mass fluid (EMF) protein hemocyanin-like 1 (Hcl-1), (2) …

On Some Metaphysical Problems Of Many Worlds Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Despite its enormous practical success, many physicists and philosophers alike agree that the quantum theory is full of contradictions and paradoxes which are difficult to solve consistently. Even after 90 years, the experts themselves still do not all agree what to make of it. The area of disagreement centers primarily around the problem of describing observations. Formally, the socalled quantum measurement problem can be defined as follows: the result of a measurement is a superposition of vectors, each representing the quantity being observed as having one of its possible values. The question that has to be answered is : how …
Surface-Water Groundwater Interactions In The Middle Rio Grande, Nm Implications For Bank Storage And Native Species, Tom Heller
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Riparian zones are important for ecological purposes and ecosystem processes, and are valued for aesthetic, recreational, cultural, and historical reasons. The declining integrity of cottonwood-dominated riparian systems in the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) of central New Mexico has been evident for several decades, of which the largest cause has been the severe alterations riparian hydrology. While cottonwood germination responses to changing flood regimes have been well studied, the response to changing groundwater dynamics - and the suitability of groundwater regimes in the MRG - is less well understood. This study used pressure transducer groundwater datasets installed in the Rio Grande …

Dental Hygeinists Clinical Assessment Of Dental Cervical Lesions, Shyanne Padilla
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Dental hygiene is among one of the fastest growing career fields in the healthcare system. With dental hygienists spending a considerable amount of time with their patients during periodic recall appointments, it is important for dental hygienists to be calibrated with one another in how they recognize and aid in recommending treatment options for certain dental conditions. Dental cervical lesions is one of the most commonly seen oral implications in the dental office, many times being associated with tooth sensitivity. With the array of etiologies and treatment options for dental cervical lesions it is important to see if this same …
Characterization Of Gallium Nitride Photoconductive Semiconductor Switches In The Nonlinear Regime, Joseph D. Teague
Characterization Of Gallium Nitride Photoconductive Semiconductor Switches In The Nonlinear Regime, Joseph D. Teague
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The energy demands of an increasingly electrified world have caused a renewed interest in once dormant fields of research. Photoconductive Semiconductor switches (PCSS) are one of these fields. They theoretically offer high voltage, high current switching in sub cm3 packaging, without the shot to shot variation and bulk of current high-power DC switches such as spark gaps. PCSS are capable of power densities of 109-1010 W/cm3, with electric fields ranging from 105-106 V/cm and current densities from 104-106 A/cm2 [1].
Most PCSS make a trade-off between voltage, …
The Effects Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Resting State Functional Brain Connectivity In A Sample Of Individuals With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Carlos I. Rodriguez
The Effects Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Resting State Functional Brain Connectivity In A Sample Of Individuals With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Carlos I. Rodriguez
Psychology ETDs
It is well established that alcohol exposure during prenatal development can lead to a heterogeneous and wide ranging set of morphological and neurobehavioral deficits that are collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). Previous neuroimaging research conducted on individuals with FASD has primarily employed graph-theoretical based analysis methods on functional imaging data to elucidate the impact of prenatal alcohol on brain connectivity. This study applied a widely used computational algorithm, group independent components analysis (gICA), to extract coherent sets of voxels that were correlated with one another as a measure of functional network connectivity (FNC) in a sample of …
Tunneling In Si Mos Nanostructures, Amir Shirkhorshidian
Tunneling In Si Mos Nanostructures, Amir Shirkhorshidian
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In this dissertation, split-gate tunnel barriers in enhancement-mode silicon metal- oxide-semiconductor (MOS) device structures are characterized electrically at liquid helium temperatures (T = 4.2 K) using transport spectroscopy. Tunnel barriers with different gate geometries and barriers implanted with a small number of antimony donor atoms are characterized. Low disorder MOS tunnel barriers are demonstrated and compared to the implanted cases. The ”clean” MOS tunnel barriers are an important proof of principle that disorder free tunnel barriers can be achieved in MOS. The implanted cases provide an important reference for the effects of donors and shallow traps on a MOS tunnel …
Localization And Scrambling Of Quantum Information With Applications To Quantum Computation And Thermodynamics, Adrian Kristian Chapman
Localization And Scrambling Of Quantum Information With Applications To Quantum Computation And Thermodynamics, Adrian Kristian Chapman
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
As our demand for computational power grows, we encounter the question: "What are the physical limits to computation?" An answer is necessarily incomplete unless it can incorporate physics at the smallest scales, where we expect our near-term high-performance computing to occur. Microscopic physics -- namely, quantum mechanics -- behaves counterintuitively to our everyday experience, however. Quantum matter can occupy superpositions of states and build stronger correlations than are possible classically. This affects how quantum computers and quantum thermodynamic engines will behave.
Though these properties may seem to overwhelmingly defeat our attempts to build a quantum computer at-first-glance, what is remarkable …
Weak Measurements For Quantum Characterization And Control, Jonathan A. Gross
Weak Measurements For Quantum Characterization And Control, Jonathan A. Gross
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This dissertation concerns itself with the virtues and vices of weak measurements. Weak measurements are all around us, but this does not mean that one should manufacture weakness on all occasions. We critically evaluate two proposals that claim weak measurements provide a novel means of performing quantum state tomography, allegedly increasing tomographic efficacy and yielding foundational insights into the nature of quantum mechanics. We find weak measurements are not an essential ingredient for most of their advertised features. In contrast to this negative finding, we highlight an optimal tomographic scheme for which weak continuous measurements are the best known implementation, …

An Analysis Of The Results Of Court Of Arbitration For Sport Doping Awards Involving Athletes Between 1994 And 2008., Genevieve F.E. Birren Esq.
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this study was to create a database of Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) awards coded for a variety of factors and then examine those factors to determine whether they had any relationship to the outcome of the CAS awards involving athletes and doping. The initial pool of awards was downloaded from the CAS website and then each award was read and coded for certain information, specifically case name, year, date decided, division, sport, party role, party name, issue, rule applied, sex, decision, and arbitrators deciding. Once this coding was complete the result was a database of …
A Path To Alignment, Gregory Richard Arnold
A Path To Alignment, Gregory Richard Arnold
Linguistics ETDs
What is really needed to make a machine into a verisimilitude of a language using human? Clearly there are holes in human communication, missing linguistic forms, and yet we manage to convey meaning. The under-determinacy of language seems to play an integral part in the adaptive system that all humans possess for perceiving, processing and producing language with shared semantic value. We invent symbols that index the missing contextual elements, allowing partial production of linguistic units. A machine would require the same abilities of indexicality and inventiveness. In this pilot study, I attempt to understand how semantic values shift and …
