1. Significant Developments During the Academic Year 1995-96 During much of this time, the main galleries were closed due to the extensive renovations of the performing arts spaces and the shared lobby area in the Fine Arts Center. We slowly began to emerge during the months of April and May, but full operations could not resume until fall. Needless to say, this extended period of working around reconfigured storage (all prints and photographs were temporarily housed in the main gallery) and non-existent exhibition space was difficult for the staff; for our general public, and - especially - for faculty and …

The Geography Of Rio Grande Pueblos Revealed By Spanish Explorers, 1540-1598, Elinore M. Barrett
The Geography Of Rio Grande Pueblos Revealed By Spanish Explorers, 1540-1598, Elinore M. Barrett
Research Papers
Scholarly and popular interest in the Pueblo settlements of the American Southwest has persisted for well over a century and has given rise to innumerable studies carried out to satisfy these interests. The present study focuses on the theme of settlement geography and involves an attempt to identify the pueblos of the Rio Grande Region that were occupied during the period of Spanish exploration, 1540-1598, before that pattern began to be altered by the impact of subsequent Spanish settlement. It is in this sense that the term geography is used, rather than in its wider meaning that would include consideration …

In 1992, in an effort to redress the inconsistency that has been characteristic of federal policy applied to California, Congress established a statewide Indian council. The needs of California Indians in regards to health care are one part of the council's mandate. This is part in a series of reports by the council. This report discusses various aspects of tribal identity and culture, including issues that impact child welfare.

The objectives of this case-based study are identified as; 1) compare cancer incidence, mortality and survival for specified cancer sites in the population compared with that in older non-Indians; 2) list risk factors for the more common types of cancer; 3) describe the role of traditional healing within the cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery processes; 4) identify barriers which affect the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from cancer in older populations; and 5) define diagnosis, treatment, and management protocols. Academic Mestizaje: Re/Producing Clinical Teaching And Re/Framing Wills As Latina Praxis, Margaret E. Montoya

What follows is an analysis that draws connections between activist teaching and activist scholarship and posits that it is the activism, the focus on the needs of Latinas/as, that makes them community service. In Part I, I describe the community lawyering program, one of the clinical law options, available at the University of New Mexico School of Law. In Part Il, I undertake to re-frame the law of wills in order to make this end-of-life ritual more relevant to the lives of Latinas/os. I then I enact a LatCritique of academic discussions and Outsider discourses. I conclude by examining our …

Of 'Subtle Prejudices,' White Supremacy And Affirmative Action: A Reply To Paul Butler, Margaret E. Montoya

I analyze the connection of affirmative action to two models of race and racism. I contend that the Supreme Court Justices who continue to support affirmative action adhere to a "prejudice" model in which race is a concept to be overcome and racism is merely a condition of individual ignorance. 13 On the other hand, I posit that Professor Butler's proposals fall within a "white supremacy" model, which looks at race as a historically contingent concept that has been used to subordinate non-white peoples from precolonial times through the present. This historical perspective offers the possibility that the concept of …
