The Need For Faculty Status And Uniform Tenure Requirements For Law Librarians, Carol A. Parker Mar 2011

The Need For Faculty Status And Uniform Tenure Requirements For Law Librarians, Carol A. Parker

Faculty Scholarship

Various statuses, tenure tracks, and performance review standards exist in law librarian tenure or continuous appointment policies. Professor Parker argues that law library leaders should insist on faculty status for librarians, develop uniform performance review standards for retention and promotion policies, and support scholarship with workshops and time off from administrative duties to write. Winner of the "AALL LexisNexis Call for Papers Open Division Award" for 2010.

Itaipú: Gender, Community, And Work In The Alto Paraná Borderlands, Brazil And Paraguay, 1954-1989., John Howard White

History ETDs

In 1975 workers on massive earth-moving machines began excavations in the middle of the Paraná River for what later would become the site of the worlds largest hydroelectric dam, Itaipú Binacional. During the period 1974-1991, the dam was constructed as a joint venture between the military regimes of Brazil and Paraguay and thousands of workers and their families migrated to the borderlands in search of employment. My study uses the conceptual framework of gender and sexuality in order to produce a comparative social history of the Itaipú hydroelectric dam project and the worker communities that it created in the Alto …

Anglo-Saxon Poetics In The Linguarum Veterum Septentrionalium Thesaurus Grammatico-Criticus Et Archaelogicus Of George Hickes: A Translation, Analysis, And Contextualization, Shannon Mccabe

English Language and Literature ETDs

In 1705, the last fascicle of the Linguarum Veterum Septentrionalium Thesaurus Grammatico-Criticus et Archaeologicus of George Hickes was published in Oxford. This monumental volume represented a major step forward in Anglo-Saxon studies. This study translates the most monumental chapter of the Thesaurus, Chapter 23. Although this chapter ―On the Poetic Art of the Anglo-Saxons,‖ represents the first sustained attempt to apply a critical and theoretical apparatus to Anglo-Saxon poetry, it is also concerned with attempts to sort out a ―purer‖ language from the various dialects represented in Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. Hickes directly addresses two major Anglo-Saxon forms in Chapter 23, ―pure …

Secondary Schooling And Indigenous Pueblo Youth: Dynamics Of Power, Natalie Martinez Feb 2011

Secondary Schooling And Indigenous Pueblo Youth: Dynamics Of Power, Natalie Martinez

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Research regarding secondary schooling of Pueblo youth in the southwestern United States is limited. Existing literature examines schooling through boarding school era historical depictions and anthropological studies of school experiences. Current Indigenous academic knowledge calls for rededication to self-determination and tribal control over education systems. This research critically analyzes curricular implications and the operation of power in a New Mexico school district whose Indigenous students exceed one-third of the student population. This study demonstrates long-standing disempowerment of the constituents of this school district through existing hierarchical power structures. This research is based upon qualitative methodologies for gathering and analyzing data, …

Choosing The Next Best President: Organizational Process Or Ceremonial Ritual? An Ethnographic Look At The Inner Dynamics Of Presidential Search Committees At Two Community Colleges, Larry Sanderson

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Over the coming years an increasing number of college presidencies will change hands. Choice of a new president who will effectively lead an institution is a decision of great importance to individuals within the organization and to the community the college serves. Most colleges employ a search process composed of representatives of key constituent groups to help identify and choose the new president. Yet, numerous participants in this activity and researchers have suggested that the academic search process has become more of a symbolic ritual than a process that effectively and consistently chooses the best candidates for executive leadership. A …

Prehistoric Roads Of New Mexico: A Synthesis Of Gis And Remote Sensing Techniques, Natalie Heberling

Geography ETDs

The existence of ancient road networks in the Chaco Canyon region of New Mexico is well documented, but roads have also been found in other Southwestern locations, as well as at other prehistoric sites all over the world. The identification and subsequent analysis of road networks can strengthen our understanding of the structure and function of prehistoric cultures. Researchers have begun utilizing different GIS and remote sensing technologies in the study of ancient road networks worldwide, but use of these technologies in archaeological research is just beginning. This research explores which GIS and Remote Sensing techniques best predict the locations …

In order to be effective, sustainable development efforts must be grounded in a fundamental understanding of the local context. Two librarians with backgrounds in anthropology will address the issue of culturally-grounded sustainable development resources available online and in digital repositories. The presenters will review the literature on the importance of the cultural context in sustainable development, identify strengths of current culturally-grounded online collections, and review gaps in order to identify areas where libraries should focus further efforts to develop these types of collections.

Neutrosophic Interpretation Of The Analects Of Confucius, Florentin Smarandache, Fu Yuhua Jan 2011

Neutrosophic Interpretation Of The Analects Of Confucius, Florentin Smarandache, Fu Yuhua

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This book is the companion volume of "Neutrosophic Interpretation of Tao Te Ching,” its purpose is to extend the foundation and application range of “The Analects of Confucius.” The reasons for this are as follows. Firstly, we are willing to point out that The Analects of Confucius already has some limitations, because many questions we are interested in cannot be answered within “The Analects of Confucius.” For example, The Analects of Confucius basically discussed the matters in China, however considering all possible situations it should matter in foreign countries as well, i.e. the “global village.” This was impossible in Confucian …

"We're Parents Too!" Changes In Father Involvement In Domestic Labor Among Urban Middle Class Dual-Worker Couples, Ruth Burgett Jolie Dec 2010

"We're Parents Too!" Changes In Father Involvement In Domestic Labor Among Urban Middle Class Dual-Worker Couples, Ruth Burgett Jolie

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate fathers involvement in domestic labor among middle class, dual-worker families in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that men's participation in domestic labor is affected by their parental identities. Three things influence parental identity: (1) demographics, including socioeconomic position, age, race/ethnicity, (2) religiosity, meaning ones adherence to religious values and participation in a formal religious institution (Wilcox 2002:781), and (3) parental ideology, denoting the belief structure surrounding what a parent ought to do. Demography and religiosity are themselves mediated by parental ideology, and in turn also further shape, parental ideology. Parental ideology directly …

Barelas Rail Yard Redevelopment: A Stakeholder Assessment, Michael W. Furze

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Community-based redevelopment of Albuquerque, New Mexicos twenty-seven acre Barelas Rail Yard site represents one possible outcome of the ongoing redevelopment process. This thesis uses semistructured interviews with neighborhood residents and community activists to reveal visions and concerns about the future of the site from beyond the profit-driven approach of typical contemporary projects. Through interviews and the case studies, I provide recommendations for discussion and capacity-building that allows neighborhood residents to better navigate a complex political landscape and influence the redevelopment of the site through a community-based process that brings together multiple visions of renewed activity on the site that respects …

Structure Of Narratives: Applying Propp's Folktale Morphology To Entertainment-Education Films, Divya Sreenivas Dec 2010

Structure Of Narratives: Applying Propp's Folktale Morphology To Entertainment-Education Films, Divya Sreenivas

Communication ETDs

This study examines narrative strategies through which feature films accomplish the dual role of entertainment-education to shape social reality surrounding health issues. More specifically, exploring films' narrative structures and characterization, this study illuminates how a coherent HIV/AIDS narrative is woven into cinematic artifacts laden with specific cultural values, beliefs and practices. The entertainment-education literature has rarely undertaken a study of films to demonstrate their entertainment-education potential. Moreover, by taking a structuralist perspective and utilizing narrative theories this study uncovers underlying elements that cut across narratives. According to Fisher (1987), the proponent of narrative theory, narratives are moral constructs with values …
