A Scaffolded Instructional Model To Teach Doctor Of Pharmacy Students To Evaluate Randomized And Non-Randomized Medical Studies On A Similar Topic To Reach A Clinical Conclusion, Stefani Dawn

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The goal of this study was to test a scaffolded instructional model in a complex Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) lesson where students evaluated three different medical studies (RCT, case-control, and cohort) on the same topic and used those studies to reach an evidence-based conclusion. The hypothesis was that the students literature evaluation skills and subsequent application of the literature to address a clinical question would more closely approximate the experts following implementation of the model. The results do not fully support the hypothesis. The conclusions were: (1) third-year doctor of pharmacy students at the college have a limited ability to …

Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre Jan 2013

Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre

History ETDs

This study focuses on intra-village religious conflict stemming from Protestant conversion in Oaxaca. Protestant expansion is nowhere more visible than in southern Mexico. Of the southern states Oaxaca has the highest growth rate of Protestantism, increasing 531% between 1970 and 2000. From 2000 to 2010, it grew another 65%. Such rapid change brought serious conflicts in closely knit indigenous villages. Asserting that en el pueblo, la costumbre es ley,' ('in the town, custom is law') some communities argued that Protestant expansion created divisions and jeopardized communalism. Religious competition challenged collective identity in indigenous villages, leading to competing conceptualizations of tradition …

The data includes an initial survey to middle school teachers, two semi-structured interviews with 16 middle schools teachers, participant-observations in JSL and other subject area classes at four schools— a total of twenty eight …

Principals' Perceptions Of Their Responsibilities And Practices Related To English Language Learners, Connie Yaqub

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine principals perceptions of their responsibilities for English language learners (ELLs) and their beliefs about what contributes to these students' academic success. The growing population of ELLs in the US face increased risk for underachievement, as recorded by traditional measures, yet little research investigates the critical role of the principal in the education of ELLs. This study focuses on 7 principals (nominated by other educators as exemplary) in public schools with high enrollments of ELLs found in rural, suburban, and urban districts in a northeastern state. Data came from individual open-ended initial …

The Politics Of Play: A Sociocultural Analysis Of Play In The Context Of State Preschool Standards, Michelle Croasdell Jan 2013

The Politics Of Play: A Sociocultural Analysis Of Play In The Context Of State Preschool Standards, Michelle Croasdell

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The past decade has seen an explosion of brain research and early childhood policies resulting in academics as a priority at state-funded preschools. Although strongly supported through a century of research, play often is pushed out by a more formalized, academic curriculum. Under the direction of the No Child Left Behind Act (2002), and the Race to the Top' program, states have developed early learning standards to inform preschool teachers and direct the education and assessment of preschool children in the United States. Through content analysis early learning standards for the 50 states and the District of Columbia were examined …

Building on their previous work exploring the importance of the cultural context in sustainable development and outlining the core information resources supporting a culturally grounded approach, in this follow-up study the authors use case studies to explore the information practices of graduate students training to be sustainable development practitioners. The article details information challenges faced by development students and practitioners when they are in the field. The authors find that the students are quite attentive to the need of development organizations to become learning organizations and they see the importance of not only developing a thorough knowledge of local culture, …

Early-Life Influences On Body Composition, Metabolic Economy, And Age At Menarche, Megan A. Workman Dec 2012

Early-Life Influences On Body Composition, Metabolic Economy, And Age At Menarche, Megan A. Workman

Anthropology ETDs

Prenatal energy balance and postnatal psychosocial experiences have been linked by separate literatures to maturational timing, adult body composition (e.g., height, skeletal muscle mass), and life-long differences in metabolic physiology. This dissertation examines the potential influences of prenatal energy balance and postnatal psychosocial experiences in simultaneous analyses designed to test whether they exert additive or interacting influences on adult body composition (chapters 2 and 4), metabolic physiology (chapter 3), and age at menarche (chapter 4) among samples of U.S. men and women. Evolutionary models that address human developmental plasticity are explored as possible explanations for the observed relationships.

Mobile devices have increasing been naturalized into the communicative landscape and the effects of this need to be explored. I focus on a college bar, MVF, to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the sets of rules surrounding mobile device use in small groups at MVF during late afternoons and evenings? (2) What are meaning(s) users and other group members attribute to the use of mobile devices at MVF during late afternoons and …

A North Indian Village That Changed, 1954-2010, James Michael Mahar

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

What social, economic and cultural changes have occurred in Khaalaapur since 1954 when Cornell and Lucknow Universities conducted a base line study prior to government efforts to effect change? This study is based on a comprehensive census survey of the entire village carried out in 1954, 1968, 1979, 2001 combined with anthropological observations conducted on twenty visits of three to nine month duration following an initial two year residence. Statistical techniques of microdemography are used to assess changes in occupation, education, fertility, and urban migration.
