Effects Of Experimental Epilepsy On The Sexual Behavior Of Cats, Frank P. Gullotta Sep 1976

Effects Of Experimental Epilepsy On The Sexual Behavior Of Cats, Frank P. Gullotta

Psychology ETDs

The human clinical literature suggests that hyposexuality is frequently associated with temporal lobe epilepsy, but rarely occurs with other forms of epilepsy. This experiment tested the hypothesis that an irritative epileptic focus in the temporal lobes results in hyposexuality. Baseline brain activity and sexual performance were recorded in male cats. Focal epilepsy was then induced by injection of aluminum hydroxide (Amphogel) unilaterally into either basolateral amygdala (temporal lobe group) or anterior sigmoid gyrus (motor cortex group). Both groups gradually developed EEG and clinical signs of epilepsy. Animals with an epileptic focus in the temporal lobe exhibited a dramatic decline in …

A Comparison Of The In Vitro Phagocytic Activity Of Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes And Alveolar Macrophages From Man And Rabbits, Thomas S. Harrison Jul 1976

A Comparison Of The In Vitro Phagocytic Activity Of Polymorphonuclear Leucocytes And Alveolar Macrophages From Man And Rabbits, Thomas S. Harrison

Biology ETDs

It has been thought for many years that the alveolar macrophage is the primary agent responsible for prevention or bacterial invasion or the lung. Numerous studies with Staphylococcus aureua, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli. Klebsiella, and Proteus have been cited to substantiate this statement. Together these organisms cause less than ten per cent of human bacterial pneumonias. Both in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that the alveolar macrophage is capable of bacterial clearance with time. Sadly lacking ss evidence that alveolar macrophages readily phagocytose Streptococcus pneumoniae which are responsible tor greater than ninety percent of all bacterial pneumonias. The …

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes Jul 1976

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes

English Language and Literature ETDs

The dissertation examines contemporary American Indian literature to see how emerging writers interpret the traditional Indian tribal value, reciprocity. While focusing on Southwestern Indian literature, the study views reciprocity as a Pan-Indian value. Defined as interdependence, the dynamics of the web of life, the 'law' that describes the interworkings of relationships, reciprocity is apparent in the treatment of food, kinship, point of view, marriage, space, advice, and prayer ( the key word of each chapter).

In American Indian culture, the web of life is not a static metaphor, but an actual description of what goes on between woman and man, …

Allografts And Xenografts Of Thyroid Gland Tissue And Cultured Thyroid Gland Cells Into Thyroidectomized Rats, Jerry Martin Katz Jul 1976

Allografts And Xenografts Of Thyroid Gland Tissue And Cultured Thyroid Gland Cells Into Thyroidectomized Rats, Jerry Martin Katz

Biology ETDs

The most desirable way of treating endocrine deficiencies would be by the successful transplantation of functional endocrine tissue into the deficient animal. However, unless the donor and recipient are identical twins or from an inbred strain of animals, an immune response is usually elicited in the recipient by the foreign tissues leading to rejection of the transplant. Thyroid gland cells which have been enzymatically dispersed from thyroid tissue and cultured in vitro are capable of reforming functional thyroid tissue when implanted into animals of the same strain. The purpose of this work was to test the ability of cultured thyroid …

Cardiorespiratory Function During Two Methods Of Lung Lavage And During Unilateral Hypoxia, Steven Allen Silbaugh Jul 1976

Cardiorespiratory Function During Two Methods Of Lung Lavage And During Unilateral Hypoxia, Steven Allen Silbaugh

Biology ETDs

Therapeutic lung lavage is a procedure by which the interior of the lung of a living animal is “washed” with a suitable solution. Bronchopulmonary lavage, a special type of lung lavage in which the bronchioles and alveoli are washed, is the major concern of this thesis. Bronchopulmonary lavage was investigated in 1920 as a possible treatment for lungs damaged by irritant gases and in the late 1950‘s as a method of hemodialysis. Currently, it is effectively used for the treatment of patients with obstructive lung disease and for the removal of radioactive materials from the mammalian lung. Bronchopulmonary lavage interferes …

The Geology Of The Caballo Peak Quadrangle, Sierra County, New Mexico, James Trimble Mason May 1976

The Geology Of The Caballo Peak Quadrangle, Sierra County, New Mexico, James Trimble Mason

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Caballo uplift, along the east side of the southern end of the Rio Grande depression, is comprised of rocks which range in age from Precambrian to Recent. The northern Caballo Mountains do not contain rocks of Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, Triassic, Jurassic, or Lower Cretaceous ages. The Precambrian rocks consist mainly of granite which encloses small rounded bodies (possibly roof pendants) of biotite-hornblende gneiss and schist, granitic gneiss, and metasediments. The Lower Paleozoic is comprised of the Cambro-Ordovician Bliss Formation, the Ordovician El Paso Group, and the Ordovician Montoya Group. These marine sediments are overlain unconformably by the Pennsylvanian Magdalena …
