Study Of The Relationship Between Maternal Nutrition And Neonatal Iron Status Using The Rat As An Animal Model, Sunil G. Anaokar

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

This study was designed to develop an animal model, using rats, to study the relationship between the iron concentration of maternal diet during lactation and maternal iron status, the effect of iron and ascorbic acid supplements on the iron content of maternal milk and the relationship between the iron content of maternal milk and neonatal iron status.

Forty pregnant and thirteen non-pregnant female albino rats were obtained at the age of 77 days, and fed a control diet containing 250 ppm iron as ferrous sulfate.

Two days after parturition Iitters of 5 dams were sacrificed to obtain blood and liver …

Pancreatic Function In Cystic Fibrosis: As Measured In The Chronically Reserpinized Rabbit Model, Mitchell L. Shiffman Jul 1979

Pancreatic Function In Cystic Fibrosis: As Measured In The Chronically Reserpinized Rabbit Model, Mitchell L. Shiffman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Pancreatic juice was collected from rabbits treated for seven days with reserpine and from untreated controls. In the treated animals the volume of pancreatic juice secreted, the flow rate and the bicarbonate output were all significantly less, while the total protein concentration, the amylase activity and the calcium concentration of the juice were all significantly elevated. This elevation in the protein concentration was due to increased amounts of protein and decreased amounts of water. Histological sections of the pancreas of treated animals revealed the presence of large amounts of PAS-positive material within the duct lumen. Since these secretory and morphological …

Early Strains Of American Romanticism: Crevecoeur, Barlow And Odiorne, Bradley S. Hayden Jul 1979

Early Strains Of American Romanticism: Crevecoeur, Barlow And Odiorne, Bradley S. Hayden

English Language and Literature ETDs

Romanticism as a scholarly term is inherently ambiguous. Yet a study dealing with certain American cultural traits during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries cannot afford not to allude to romantic concepts. J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, Joel Barlow and Thomas Odiorne did not consider themselves "romantics"; the use of the term as a scholarly device is relatively recent. One can, however, perceive the germs of much of American romanticism in selected of their works.

George Orwell's Exploitation Of Two Propaganda Techniques In Animal Farm And 1984, Linda Ann Ramsey Jul 1979

George Orwell's Exploitation Of Two Propaganda Techniques In Animal Farm And 1984, Linda Ann Ramsey

English Language and Literature ETDs

Two recurring patterns in George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 are counted and analyzed in relationship to Orwell’s theme: in Animal Farm, a passive phrase with the agent deleted and replaced by “it”, and in 1984, a negative pattern beginning with “it.” These patterns are shown to e typical of propaganda. The effectiveness of passive and negative patterns as propaganda is explained through a discussion of psycholinguistic research on comprehension time. These patterns are shown to work as propaganda in the fictional worlds of the novels. Orwell’s interest in propaganda and style are reviewed, and his ironic intent in Animal …
