Reproductive Effort, Offspring Size And Benefit/Cost Ratios In The Classification Of Life Histories, Eric Charnov Jan 2002

Reproductive Effort, Offspring Size And Benefit/Cost Ratios In The Classification Of Life Histories, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

There have been many attempts to document links between reproductive allocation and factors such as adult body size and demography. This paper suggests that among closely related taxa, two dimensionless numbers, each a benefit—cost ratio summarizing reproductive timing, allocation and demography, are invariants and thus are useful to classify life histories. The two numbers are E/α and C·E, where E is average adult life span,α is age-at-first-reproduction and C is average mass (per adult) devoted to reproduction per unit of time, divided by the average adult body mass (m); C is usually called reproductive effort'. Since E−1 is the average …

The Aesthetics Of Paradoxism (Second Edition), Titu Popescu, P. Georgelin, Florentin Smarandache, L. Popescu

UNM Gallup Faculty Publications

In the history of thought and creation, the decisive events, the great and significant moments, the strongly affirmative stages - then the imposition of the optimizing novelties - have depended on the name and prestige of a personality. Referring to those, we personalize further on. The examples are extremely numerous, even in our nearest past. When we mention a creation - in the largest sense of the term - with the name of the personality who illustrates it most extensively at a given time, we state precisely the specific importance of it; we give it, with other words, the identity …

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2002

Neutrosophy, A New Branch Of Philosophy, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper is presented a new branch of philosophy, called neutrosphy, which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. The Fundamental Thesis: Any idea is T% true, I% indeterminate, and F% false, - where T, I, F are standard or non-standard subsets included in ]0-, 1+[. The Fundamental Theory: Every idea tends to be neutralized, diminished, balanced by ideas (not only , as Hegel asserted) - as a state of equilibrium. Neutrosophy is the base of neutrosophic logic, a multiple value logic that generalizes the fuzzy logic, of neutrosophic …

Renewing Congregations: The Contribution Of Faith-Based Community Organizing, Mary Ann Ford Flaherty, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

Congregations of faith seek to live out the call of their faith traditions in a culture experiencing enormous change. One of the key shifts continuing to occur is the pressure experienced by families and communities in a culture of rising individualism and global economics. The emerging market-driven economy is expanding to influence more than just the acquisition of things. Relationships and communities are now being seen as commodities that are bought and sold.
