The Pornographic Digital Divide: Libraries And Forbidden Knowledge, Annelise Sklar Mar 2005

The Pornographic Digital Divide: Libraries And Forbidden Knowledge, Annelise Sklar

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Introduction: This paper does not present solutions to the use of pornography in public spaces such as the library nor does it reflect the opinions of the institution that pays my salary. Instead, it presents a dilemma and problematizes the use of and access to pornography and other taboo information materials by library users. Background: Pornography is the graphic representation of sexual acts. While hard copy formats certainly still exist, pornography is increasingly digital, moving from print to film to videocassette to the internet and DVD. Each of these digital formats requires the use of special equipment (VCR, computer with …

Environmental Justice, Eileen Gauna, Catherine A. O'Neill, Clifford Rechtschaffen Mar 2005

Environmental Justice, Eileen Gauna, Catherine A. O'Neill, Clifford Rechtschaffen

Faculty Scholarship

This white paper describes briefly the remarkable journey of community-based environmental justice advocates over the last 15 years and their impact on environmental regulation. It will also describe some of the empirical evidence of disparities and the regulatory dynamics that make these inequities an intractable problem, despite the collective efforts of grassroots leaders, environmental justice organizations, public interest law firms, and governmental officials. The paper then focuses on one important set of issues that must be tackled in order to achieve environmental justice: those involving injustice in risk regulation. We strive in this white paper, as allies in this collective …

Environmental Justice In A Dryland Democracy: A Comment On Water Basin Institutions, Eileen Gauna Jan 2005

Environmental Justice In A Dryland Democracy: A Comment On Water Basin Institutions, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Book Display Case

This comment to Dryland Democracy (Prof. Janet Neuman, in Dusting Off the Blueprint for a Dryland Democracy: Incorporating Watershed Integrity and Water Availability Into Land Use Decisions (Dryland Democracy)) will expand upon the theme of social costs, exploring how Professor Neuman's basic proposal-water basin institutions with centralized authority-might address some of these inequities. There are not only serious environmental justice issues that must be addressed by a water basin institution, but there are also special complications that would arise during the initial process of consolidating authority. Before that discussion proceeds, however, a brief history of the environmental justice movement is …

Tox Town: An Internet Introduction To Environmental Health And Toxic Chemicals, Cynthia Love, Martha Szczur, Mary Higgins, Erinn Aspinall

Publications

Can a web site present environmental health information to the general public in a fun and compelling manner? This was the goal of the National Library of Medicine's Specialized Information Services when it designed Tox Town. By its nature, chemical data is complex and not often perceived by the general public as relevant to their daily lives. However, many common hazardous materials (e.g., asbestos, carbon monoxide, lead, radon) can have profound health effects if encountered in the everyday environment. Enhanced with lively graphics, sound effects, and animation, Tox Town adds interest to learning about connections between chemicals, the environment, and …
