The Legacy Uranium Mining And Milling Cleanup Plan: Evaluation Of The Epa Five-Year Plan, Grants Mining District, New Mexico, Earle Dixon

Public Administration ETDs

Uranium mining and milling in northwestern New Mexico (NM) impacted soils, stream sediments, surface water, and ground water with elevated levels of radioactivity and toxic heavy metals. Uranium and its radioactive decay products such as radium and radon gas present a significant public health and safety hazard and environmental health risk. The exposure of people and the environment to heavy metals and radionuclides in soil, air, and water in the vicinity of legacy uranium operations in the Grants District requires mitigation through the systematic assessment and cleanup of materials and sites bearing these hazardous contaminants. In August 2010 EPA released …

Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe Sep 2015

Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe

Psychology ETDs

Despite a large body of evidence implicating oxytocin (OT) in various classes of social relationships, researchers have only recently investigated how OT might function within human romantic relationships. I contribute to the growing literature on OT and romantic relationships with the current study, which investigated relationship features that promote OT secretion in a sample of 75 romantic couples. Partners in separate rooms were asked to write (for 10 minutes) about ways their partner did or did not support them. OT was assayed before and after this writing task, and also at a follow-up session one week later. Mixed model analyses …

The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile Sep 2015

The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile

Psychology ETDs

Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for long-term neurocognitive morbidities. Current research has only recently begun to examine how these neurocognitive late effects translate into impairments across important aspects of daily living. Additionally, research remains in its early stages of identifying risk factors associated with neurocognitive and broad functional impairments. The current study explores a proposed model of neurocognitive late effects by examining the relationship between neurocognitive deficits and broad functional impairment in cancer survivors relative to healthy controls. The current study also explores the contribution of associated risk factors including treatment severity and time since treatment among cancer survivors …

Contribution Of Far Field Effects Of Cortical Tdcs In The Cerebellum To Learning In An Object Detection Paradigm, Aaron P. Jones Sep 2015

Contribution Of Far Field Effects Of Cortical Tdcs In The Cerebellum To Learning In An Object Detection Paradigm, Aaron P. Jones

Psychology ETDs

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to enhance many cognitive and motor functions, and has been used in many areas, including rehabilitation of speech after stroke, cognitive enhancement, and treatment of mental illness. Our lab has demonstrated that, paired with training, anodal tDCS over electrode site F10 as well as cathodal tDCS over site T5 both increased the ability to detect hidden objects in a complex visual environment in a discovery learning paradigm. Stimulation of F10 has further been shown to enhance perceptual sensitivity selectively, without a change to response bias, and this effect was further enhanced when …

Examining The Effects Of A Sub-Chronic Exposure To Phencyclidine: An Analysis Of Functional Network Connectivity, Behavior, And Mrna Expression, Christy M. Magcalas

Psychology ETDs

Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and plays a vital role in the pathology of various disease states. Thus, the manipulation and examination of glutamate has been and continues to be pivotal in experimental research. For example, a chronic administration of phencyclidine (PCP), a non-competitive glutamatergic N-methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, generates behavioral and neurobiological changes that mimic symptoms and microlevel changes found in psychiatric disease states, such as schizophrenia [30]. Prior research has established that PCP induces cognitive deficits, impedes spatial learning and memory performance, and alters mRNA expression of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic markers parvalbumin, …

Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu Sep 2015

Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The D-glucose disaccharide α, α-D-trehalose is synthesized by a variety of bacteria, fungi, plants and invertebrates to support cell survival by functioning as a fuel, a metabolic regulator or a protectant against environmental stress. Five different trehalose biosynthetic pathways are known to exist, one of which, the OtsA/OtsB pathway is common among pathogenic bacteria and fungi and is also found in parasitic nematodes. Previously reported otsA and otsB gene knockout (or knockdown) experiments have shown that both pathway enzymes are essential for M. tuberculosis cell growth and host colonization. RNAi gene silencing carried out in the nematode model system Caenohabditis …

Case Studies Of The Hot Dog-Fold And Acyl-Adenylate-Forming Superfamilies: Characterizing The Importance Of Functional Divergence In Cellular Metabolism, Lucas R. Zimney Sep 2015

Case Studies Of The Hot Dog-Fold And Acyl-Adenylate-Forming Superfamilies: Characterizing The Importance Of Functional Divergence In Cellular Metabolism, Lucas R. Zimney

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Some of the biggest contributors to cellular respiration (and cellular metabolism in general) are acyl-CoA derivatives, a subclass of biological thioesters. Known to function in a variety of pathways, the regulation of their formation and breakdown are critical, carried about by acyl-CoA synthetases and thioesterases, respectively. The work reported within this dissertation will focus on functional divergence within two enzyme superfamilies -- the hot dog-fold and acyl-adenylate-forming superfamilies — and can be broken down into two main parts. Part one will look at tracking the functional divergence within the hot dog-fold superfamily thioesterases. A highly evolved thioesterase, flK, has been …

Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield Sep 2015

Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield

Psychology ETDs

The negative effects of racial discrimination and microaggressions on health have been consistently documented, but only a handful of studies have examined this topic among Native Americans. The goal of this study was to test the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model (Walters, Simoni, & Evans-Campbell, 2002) among Native American college students attending two post-secondary institutions in the Southwestern United States. It was hypothesized that microaggressions would be positively related to substance use, and that cultural factors would attenuate the strength of this relationship. A total of 347 participants (65% female) completed a one-time online survey that included the Microaggressions Scale, the Actualization …

The Development Of Identity In Preschoolers, Jin Xiaoshen Sep 2015

The Development Of Identity In Preschoolers, Jin Xiaoshen

Psychology ETDs

The primary goal of this study was to investigating the extent to which young preschoolers (e.g., 3-year-olds) understand identity in terms of what an object does rather than in terms of either what the object looks like or what its inside properties are. My primary guiding research questions are on what basis do preschoolers construct identity judgments. Unlike previous research, which has focused primarily on one pair of qualities (insides/outsides), this study includes diverse pairs in order to investigate different levels/qualities of organization that characterize preschoolers judgments of identity constancy. I predicted that a transition may occur between the ages …

Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski Sep 2015

Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski

History ETDs

The discovery of gold in California inspired a rush of amateur miners to the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1849. Meanwhile, Europeans hurried to their Alps to climb during the Golden Age of Mountaineering. These events, seemingly separate, came from the same basic impetus. The Scientific Revolution eased the old fear of mountains from the religious tradition and gave humans the license and curiosity to explore. Mountains also offered capital incentive to adventurers in the form of mineral deposits, tourism and the glory that comes with athletic accomplishment. Between 1849 and 1936, "mountaineers" transformed the nearly inaccessible high places of the …

Conflict, Tension, Strength,' explores the longevity of three separate Catholic Indian missions in the West: St. Paul's Mission in Hays, Montana; St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana; and St. Stephens Indian School in St. Stephens, Wyoming. These mission schools, in part, possess two common traits: they have all reached the 125-year milestone and they are all located on or adjacent to reservations that serve two distinct Indian tribes. St. Paul's Mission is on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. St. Labre Indian School serves students from the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations. …

At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura Sep 2015

At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura

History ETDs

Research into the pre-Islamic Arabs has posited an autochthonous, maritime tradition in Southern Arabia which provided the foundation for effective use of sea power within the early Islamic state. Using historical and archaeological evidence, the existence of such a tradition is reexamined within the broader cultural and historical context of the area, with focus divided into three periods; that immediately prior to the birth of Muhammad, that before the rise of Ptolemaic Egypt and that of the Mesopotamian City-States, when southern Arabia was peripheral to the earliest organized civilizations. It is concluded that although maritime resources were always utilized to …

Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole Sep 2015

Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Proteins play a critical role in nearly every biological activity. In consequence, organismal health and homeostasis often hinges on the ability of intracellular regulatory systems to sustain the quality and function of these diverse, structurally complex macromolecules. Correct protein function depends on correct form, and during periods of destabilizing cellular stress, protein quality is managed in part by the heat shock response, which acts to support, isolate, and reform new or damaged proteins, and in part by the autophagic recycling of abnormal proteins, cytotoxic protein aggregates, and terminally damaged organelles. We conducted a pooled analysis of available research in humans …

Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz Sep 2015

Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz

English Language and Literature ETDs

Until now, Wulfstan, Archbishop of Yorks relationship to and view of Anglo-Saxon kingship has never been comprehensively examined. The lack of attention this topic has received is a glaring omission in Wulfstan scholarship. Wulfstan worked under two kings, \xc6thelred and Cnut, and he had an interest in Edgar that has long been recognized. In response to Wulfstan's career under these kings and his interest in Edgar, scholars have been far too ready to assume that the archbishop's view of kingship was straightforward. It has too long been taken for granted that Wulfstan operated under Cnut in the same manner as …

The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers Sep 2015

The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers

English Language and Literature ETDs

The Wilderness in Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience and Society' focuses on the disjunction between the actual environmental conditions of medieval England and the depiction of the wilderness in the literature of the time period from the Anglo-Saxon conversion to the close of the Middle Ages. Using environmental history to identify the moments of slippage between fact and fiction, this project examines the ideology behind the representations of the wilderness in literature and the relationship of these representations to social practices and cultural norms as well as genre and targeted audience. The first chapter argues that the depiction of early …

Examination Of Silica Removal With Solids Recycle For Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment, Magdalena Sims Sep 2015

Examination Of Silica Removal With Solids Recycle For Reverse Osmosis Pretreatment, Magdalena Sims

Civil Engineering ETDs

Water treatment methods serve to remove harmful constituents from ground and surface waters prior to municipal distribution by exploiting the physical and chemical properties of those constituents. Properties can include size, charge, or solubility. Silica (SiO2) is difficult to remove during water treatment because it can exist in ground and surface waters as various dissolved and particulate species, all of which are defined by different properties. Silica speciation is dependent on variables like pH, temperature, concentration, and ionic composition. Consumption of silica as it exists in drinking water is not dangerous to humans or animals, but it can form damaging …

Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller Sep 2015

Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller

Civil Engineering ETDs

Municipal wastewater discharge to the environment is generally subject to regulations established under the Clean Water Act. Though the water is highly treated it is not suitable for human consumption. Increased interest in water reuse for potable supply introduces concern about trace constituents present in their water, such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors. Current treatment processes, such as reverse osmosis, are used to remove many of these compounds, but is expensive and energy intensive. The rise of interest in potable water reuse may cause consumers to be concerned about trace constituents present in their water and would require additional treatment. …
