Digital Technology, Literacies, And Identity: Experiences Of Historically Marginalized Adolescents, Daniel Olufemi Dr. May 2017

Digital Technology, Literacies, And Identity: Experiences Of Historically Marginalized Adolescents, Daniel Olufemi Dr.

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

New media and digital technologies shape the literacy practices and identity development of adolescents (Ellison, 2014, Barton & Hamilton, 2000; Perry, 2012; Lotherington & Jenson, 2011). Research into this phenomenon has largely focused on the general adolescent population. However, this narrative inquiry focuses on the experiences of four adolescents of color in New York City who live in poverty. Participants in this study visit a neighborhood library to access computers and the Internet. The researcher conducted semi-structure interviews in the library to evoke narratives about participants’ use of digital media and observed participants as they used the library computers. Analysis …

Immunology Of The Gray Short-Tailed Opossum During Pregnancy And Prenatal Development, Victoria L. Hansen May 2017

Immunology Of The Gray Short-Tailed Opossum During Pregnancy And Prenatal Development, Victoria L. Hansen

Biology ETDs

Vertebrate species that bear live young have overcome the evolutionary challenge of maintaining both a functional adaptive immune system and viviparous life cycle. In normal pregnancy, viviparous mothers are able sustain and nourish a fetus that is genetically half non-self without mounting an immunological attack. In 1953 Sir Peter Medawar brought attention to the “enigma of the fetal graft” and immunologists have been puzzling out the intricacies of fetal tolerance ever since. Although viviparity has evolved in all jawed vertebrate lineages aside from Aves, the vast majority of reproductive immunology research has been limited to eutherian mammals. There are insights …

The Effects Of Atmospheric Pressure On Inter-Specific Competition And The Morphological And Hematological Characteristics Of Elevational Distributions Of Hummingbirds, Ariel Marie Gaffney May 2017

The Effects Of Atmospheric Pressure On Inter-Specific Competition And The Morphological And Hematological Characteristics Of Elevational Distributions Of Hummingbirds, Ariel Marie Gaffney

Biology ETDs

Species diversity in mountainous regions is strongly influenced elevational range limits of species, but it is generally not known which abiotic or biotic factors maintain these limits. Using Black-chinned and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, species with offset but overlapping elevational ranges in the southwestern USA, we investigate the role barometric pressure plays in influencing these limits. In chapter one, we used a hypobaric chamber to test the effects of variable air pressures on interspecific competitive dominance. We sequenced the genes that encode the two adult isoforms of haemoglobin and measured the O2-binding affinity of each isoform. In chapter two, we …

Search In T Cell And Robot Swarms: Balancing Extent And Intensity, George M. Fricke May 2017

Search In T Cell And Robot Swarms: Balancing Extent And Intensity, George M. Fricke

Computer Science ETDs

This work investigates effective search and resource collection algorithms for swarms. Deterministic spiral algorithms and L ́evy search processes have been shown to be optimal for single searchers. We extend these strategies to swarms of robots and populations of T cells and measure performance under a variety of conditions.

Search extent and intensity lie on a continuum: more intensive patterns search thoroughly in the local area, while extensive patterns cover more area but may miss targets nearby. We show that the most efficient trade-off between search intensity and extent for swarms depends strongly on the distribution of targets, swarm size …

Identification & Evaluation Of Dna Ligase Inhibitors: Predicting The Binding Of Small Molecules To The Dna Binding Domain By Molecular Modeling, Timothy Richard Lloyd Howes May 2017

Identification & Evaluation Of Dna Ligase Inhibitors: Predicting The Binding Of Small Molecules To The Dna Binding Domain By Molecular Modeling, Timothy Richard Lloyd Howes

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The phosphodiester backbone of DNA is maintained by DNA ligases. In human cells, there are three genes that encode DNA ligase polypeptides with distinct but overlapping functions. A series of small molecule inhibitors of human DNA ligases were previously identified using a rational structure-based approach. Three of these inhibitors, L82, a DNA ligase I selective inhibitor, and L67, an inhibitor of DNA ligases I and III, and L189, an inhibitor of all three human DNA ligases, have related structures. Here I present and characterize L82-G17 a next-generation ligase I specific inhibitor. L82-G17 is a potent ligase I uncompetitive inhibitor that …

Refuge, Resistance, And Rebellion: Humanism And The Middle Way In The French Wars Of Religion, Thomas E. Shumaker May 2017

Refuge, Resistance, And Rebellion: Humanism And The Middle Way In The French Wars Of Religion, Thomas E. Shumaker

History ETDs

The assumption that civil war era France divided neatly into two ideological parties is common within the historical scholarly literature. There were, more accurately, three ideological groups in France by the outbreak of the Civil Wars in 1562. Firstly was the reactionary party, made up of entrenched forces of the Crown that had adopted much of the outward symbols of the Renaissance/Humanist movement but at root remained essentially regressive. The Moderate Party, secondly, made up mostly of Catholic Humanists and Renaissance scholars who adopted much of the essence of reform, but stopped short of calling for systematic societal change through …

Cd82 Membrane Scaffolding Regulates Hematopoietic Cell Functions, Christina Marie Termini May 2017

Cd82 Membrane Scaffolding Regulates Hematopoietic Cell Functions, Christina Marie Termini

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Through their ability to self-renew and differentiate, hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) maintain the adult blood and immune systems. The microenvironment, or niche, in which HSPCs reside, serves as a critical regulator of HSPC functions. As previous work has identified the tetraspanin CD82 as a mediator of HSPC-niche interactions, we aimed to determine the mechanism by which this occurs. Our data demonstrate that CD82 expression and scaffolding regulate HSPC interactions with niche components by organizing the α4 integrin subunit into tightly packed nanoclusters. The HSPC niche can also protect acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells from therapeutics. Therefore, we next examined how …

Humanature Relations In Oman: Connections, Disconnections And Globalization, Maryam A. Alhinai May 2017

Humanature Relations In Oman: Connections, Disconnections And Globalization, Maryam A. Alhinai

Communication ETDs

In this dissertation, I explore agricultural practices as a window into ecocultural communication. Using agricultural practices of villagers in Village G, Oman, as a case study, I explore the ways in which villagers and government officials conceptualize humanature relations and the forces that enhance and/or impede these relations. My specific goals for this study were: (1) to build an interpretive understanding of ecocultural orientations of villagers and officials in Oman and how they conceptualize their humanature relations; (2) to critically examine ideologies and uncover structural forces that enable/constrain humanature relations; and (3) to co-create community engagement work that honors the …
