Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright Dec 2018

Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this thesis the Double Pendulum Inverted on a Cart (DPIC) system is modeled using the Euler-Lagrange equation for the chosen Lagrangian, giving a second-order nonlinear system. This system can be approximated by a linear first-order system in which linear control theory can be used. The important definitions and theorems of linear control theory are stated and proved to allow them to be utilized on a linear version of the DPIC system. Controllability and eigenvalue placement for the linear system are shown using MATLAB. Linear Optimal control theory is likewise explained in this section and its uses are applied to …

Towards A Better Understanding Of The Effects Of Praziquantel On The Interaction Between The Helminth Parasite Schistosoma Mansoni And Its Murine Host, Melissa Catherine Sanchez Dec 2018

Towards A Better Understanding Of The Effects Of Praziquantel On The Interaction Between The Helminth Parasite Schistosoma Mansoni And Its Murine Host, Melissa Catherine Sanchez

Biology ETDs

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that infects 206 million individuals worldwide. This disease is caused by dioecious trematodes of the genus Schistosoma, and its pathology is associated with the large number of eggs that are released by the female. Entrapped eggs lead to host immune and inflammatory responses resulting in disease progression. Chemotherapy provides the main means of control and praziquantel (PZQ) is the only widely available drug that is used in all mass drug administration (MDA) programs. As the number of individuals receiving PZQ continues to grow, the development of PZQ resistance is a concern and …

The Impact Of Ideology On Lexical Borrowing In Arabic: A Synergy Of Corpus Linguistics And Cda, Sami Hamdi Dec 2018

The Impact Of Ideology On Lexical Borrowing In Arabic: A Synergy Of Corpus Linguistics And Cda, Sami Hamdi

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Lexical borrowing is a natural outcome of language contact and one source of neologisms. The traditional view of lexical borrowing explains it as motivated mainly by lexical need or prestige where loans in the recipient language have more or less similar if not identical meanings with the borrowing language. Linguistic adaptation has been often seen grammatically based where grammarians or linguists assume the major task of nativizing foreign terms. This is typical in many studies on linguistic borrowing in Arabic while a secondary attention is given to semantic, sociolinguistic, and educational perspectives. The present study approached lexical borrowing as more …

A Plausible Resolution To Hilbert’S Failed Attempt To Unify Gravitation & Electromagnetism, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we explore the reasons why Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify gravitation theory and electromagnetism failed and outline a plausible resolution of this problem. The latter is based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorem and Newton’s aether stream model.

Learning Statistics Through Guided Block Play: A Pre-Curriculum In Statistical Literacy, Robert P. Giebitz

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Learning to use data to investigate the world and make decisions has become an essential skill for all citizens. Play and curiosity are powerful motivators for learning. Inquiry – the process of asking questions and seeking answers – can engage the natural curiosity of young learners and motivate early learning. Recent research in statistics education has shown that children as young as 4 and 5 years old can learn to collect, organize, and interpret data they acquire through observation, counting, and measuring in a process of guided inquiry. Guided block play has been used for over 100 years to enable …

Scalable, Biofunctional, Ultra-Stable Nano- Bio- Composite Materials Containing Living Cells, Patrick E. Johnson, C. Jeffrey Brinker, Graham Timmins, Jacob Agola, Jason Harper

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Three-dimensional encapsulation of cells within nanostructured silica gels or matrices enables applications as diverse as biosensors, microbial fuel cells, artificial organs, and vaccines. It also allows study of individual cell behaviors. Recent progress has improved the performance and flexibility of cellular encapsulation, yet there remains a need for robust scalable processes for large format production of cell-encapsulating materials. Here, we detail two novel techniques, that enable the large-scale production of functional Nano-Bio-Composites (NBCs) containing living cells within ordered 3-D lipid/silica nanostructures: 1) thick-casting and 2) spray drying. Furthermore, we detail a third technique for material scaling in which aqueous, silicate-based …

Development Of Functional Chemical Probes For The Study Of Viscosity, Fe(Ii), And Ferroptosis And Photo-Triggered Drug Delivery, Yongyi Wei

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Small molecule probes are useful tools for the study of biology. In particular, the dye derived fluorescence probes enable to spatiotemporally monitor the events of analytes of interest. The noninvasive feature is particularly attractive for the biological studies in live cells. The challenge is to develop chemical probes capable of detection of the analyte of interest with high specificity.

Toward this end, my Ph. D. study centers on the development of novel chemical probes for the study and understanding of the alternation of important cellar contents and substances and their functions and relationship between normal and disease states. In the …

Arts Of Resistance: Ecologic History And Contemporary Interventions In The Valley Of Mexico, Chloë L. Courtney Nov 2018

Arts Of Resistance: Ecologic History And Contemporary Interventions In The Valley Of Mexico, Chloë L. Courtney

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis analyzes two contemporary artworks concerning Mexico City’s complex socio-ecologic history: the installation The Return of a Lake (2012), by Maria Thereza Alves, and the performance Plan Acalote (2015) by the collective Plan Acalli (Carlos Huitzil and Ehecatl Morales). Mexico City faces land subsidence, flooding, and water shortages. Systemic power imbalances and ongoing efforts to transform a wetland landscape to a city conforming to Eurocentric ideals concentrate these problems in marginal communities. Using strategies of eco-criticism, decolonial thought, and performance studies, I argue that The Return of a Lake and Plan Acalote link broad social and ecologic problems with …

Avian Thermoregulation In The Heat: Resting Metabolism, Evaporative Cooling And Limits To Activity In Sonoran Desert Birds, Eric Krabbe Smith Nov 2018

Avian Thermoregulation In The Heat: Resting Metabolism, Evaporative Cooling And Limits To Activity In Sonoran Desert Birds, Eric Krabbe Smith

Biology ETDs

Birds in subtropical deserts face significant thermoregulatory challenges as environmental temperatures regularly exceed avian body temperature. To understand the differing susceptibility of desert birds to increasing temperatures, this dissertation initially examined thermoregulatory performance in seven passerine bird species varying in body mass from 10 to 70g – Lesser Goldfinch, House Finch, Pyrrhuloxia, Cactus Wren, Northern Cardinal, Abert’s Towhee and Curve-billed Thrasher – and three larger Sonoran Desert nesting bird species – Mourning Dove (104 g), White-winged Dove (147 g) and Gambel’s Quail (161 g). Daytime resting metabolism, evaporative water loss and real-time body temperature were measured using flow-through respirometry at …

ABSTRACT

In counseling ethics and standards, there is a call to integrate practices and for practitioners to become more aware of other cultures and traditions (Sue, Arrendondo, & McDavis, 1992; Ratts, Singh, Butler, Nassar-McMillan, & McCullough, 2015). Very little research exists that addresses when the Western mental health practitioner and the traditional healer are …

How Hilbert’S Attempt To Unify Gravitation And Electromagnetism Failed Completely, And A Plausible Resolution, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache, Robert N. Boyd Nov 2018

How Hilbert’S Attempt To Unify Gravitation And Electromagnetism Failed Completely, And A Plausible Resolution, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache, Robert N. Boyd

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In the present paper, these authors argue on actual reasons why Hilbert’s axiomatic program to unify gravitation theory and electromagnetism failed completely. An outline of plausible resolution of this problem is given here, based on: a) Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, b) Newton’s aether stream model. And in another paper we will present our calculation of receding Moon from Earth based on such a matter creation hypothesis. More experiments and observations are called to verify this new hypothesis, albeit it is inspired from Newton’s theory himself.

What Factors Influence Catholic Parents’ Choice Of School(S) For Their Child(Ren)?, Andrea R. Aiello

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In 1965, the American Catholic school system had 5.66 million students, 13,296 schools and educated nearly 13% of all school-aged children. Fifty years later, Catholic school enrollments had fallen to approximately 1.93 million and a total of 6,250 schools, while more than 17% of the students enrolled in Catholic schools identified as non-Catholic. Although there appear to be several positive points of difference for selecting Catholic schools, nevertheless families are making other choices. In this exploratory study, I endeavored to understand the demographic characteristics, attitudes toward education as well as more general motivations of American Catholic parents, with a special …

Engage A Voice, Repress Fatigue; The Coincident Evolution Of Hominin Vocalization And A Metabolic Threshold, Galen A. Morton 9935238, Martin L. Morton

Shared Knowledge Conference

Physiologically self-protective mechanisms borne from hominin evolutionary history that increase survivability are not unknown to science. In reviewing exercise science literature regarding testing and assessment measures of subjects talking while exercising, a logical question has materialized: To what degree has evolution facilitated synchronization of comfortable oral communication with sustainable exercise intensity? An individual able to engage a voice, represses fatigue. The Talk Test, is a practical strategy whereby a subject deliberately speaks during an exercise protocol. It is a common tool in both kinesiology and clinical fields because it inherently identifies a pivotal metabolic threshold. The coincidence of comfortable ability …

Compositional Analysis And Cross-Cultural Examination Of Blue And Blue-Green Post-Fire Colorants On Tolita-Tumaco Ceramics, Breanna Fae Reiss Nov 2018

Compositional Analysis And Cross-Cultural Examination Of Blue And Blue-Green Post-Fire Colorants On Tolita-Tumaco Ceramics, Breanna Fae Reiss

Art & Art History ETDs

Blue and blue-green ceramic colorants are an uncommon occurrence in the ancient Americas. This paper explores blue and blue-green post-fire colorants used by the coastal Tolita-Tumaco culture of ancient coastal Ecuador and Colombia through compositional testing and cross-cultural comparison. Using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, one sample each of blue and blue-green colorants were tested to identify the mineral composition present. Though the colorants were thought to likely originate from copper carbonates like azurite or malachite, or perhaps even similar to other Mesoamerican pigments like Maya Blue, the blue-green pigment, collected at La Tolita, …

A Few Surprises About Non-Locality Interactions, Precognitive Interdiction, And The Spirit From Physics Viewpoint, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache Oct 2018

A Few Surprises About Non-Locality Interactions, Precognitive Interdiction, And The Spirit From Physics Viewpoint, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

There are various supernatural phenomena which hardly can be explained by the existing electromagnetic science, for instance non-locality interactions (may be associated with ESP etc), and also precognitive interdictions. And there are other problems such as how to include the Spirit in our consciousness. For example, it has been known for long time that intuition plays significant role in many professions and human life, including in entrepreneurship, government, and also in detective or law enforcement activities. Despite these examples, such a precognitive interdiction is hardly accepted in established science. In this paper, we discuss non-locality interactions and also advanced solutions …

The Tetraspanin Cd82 Regulates Hematopoietic Stem Cell Fitness And Bone Marrow Retention, Chelsea Alyssa Kimiko Saito-Reis Oct 2018

The Tetraspanin Cd82 Regulates Hematopoietic Stem Cell Fitness And Bone Marrow Retention, Chelsea Alyssa Kimiko Saito-Reis

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The maintenance of the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) population is critical to sustaining the adult blood and immune system throughout an organism’s lifespan. The bone marrow microenvironment plays a key role in the regulation of HSPC maintenance and functions. Previous work from our lab has identified the tetraspanin CD82 as an important modulator of HSPC interactions with the bone marrow niche. However, the mechanisms as to how CD82 contributes to the maintenance, trafficking and retention of HSPCs with the niche remained unclear. First, we investigated how CD82 promotes HSPC quiescence, homing and engraftment using a global CD82 knock …

Three Alternatives For Managing Free-Roaming Horses And Burros: A Legal Reform, C.J. Michaels Oct 2018

Three Alternatives For Managing Free-Roaming Horses And Burros: A Legal Reform, C.J. Michaels

Natural Resources Journal

The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act is overdue for repeal or revision. The Wild Horse and Burro Program is expensive for taxpayers, detrimental to rangelands, and harmful to the thousands of free-roaming equines it is intended to benefit. For nearly half a century, the Bureau of Land Management and United States Forest Service have struggled to balance the mandates of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act amidst a political and social climate that makes compliance impossible. Forty-six years after the Act was passed, the agencies are further from arriving at a solution than they have ever been. The …

How Wide Is Wide Enough?: Science, Values, And Law In Riparian Habitat Conservation, George Wilhere, Timothy Quinn

Natural Resources Journal

Difficult environmental policy issues often elicit fervent declarations to “follow the science.” Such declarations ignore the essential role of values in policy making. The main purpose of this article is to clarify the relationships among science, values, and law in environmental policy. An important policy issue in wildlife conservation, is determining “how much is enough?” That is, what is the smallest amount of habitat or minimum population size that is adequate for the long-term survival of wildlife populations? This paper presents three case studies in which policy makers decided how much was enough for protecting freshwater salmonid habitats. The case …

An Integral Triune Model Of Human Consciousness And Its Implications To Cancer Treatment, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

To emphasize what we have outlined in a preceding paper, we consider the following: that human consciousness model should take into consideration “spirit” role, i.e. the mind-body-spirit as integral aspect, which view is neglected in the so-called Freudian mental model. In this paper, we consider two approaches to cancer treatment derived from such an integral triune view of human consciousness, including (a) healing frequency approach as advised by Royal Rife and David Hawkins, and also (b) relational therapy, based on recent research on the healing role of love and compassion.

Intraspecific Floral Color Variation As Perceived By Pollinators And Non-Pollinators: Evidence For Pollinator-Imposed Constraints?, Kellen Cedar Paine

Biology ETDs

Pollinator-mediated selection is expected to constrain floral color variation within plant populations, yet populations with high color variability are common in nature. To explore this, we collected floral reflectance spectra for 34 populations of 14 plant species of New Mexico, USA, and translated them into three different visual spaces. We found evidence that the majority comparisons were indistinguishable to bees, the dominant pollinator group. We also found that floral color variation was significantly greater for two non-pollinating groups, birds and humans. Our results suggest that a portion of human-perceived floral color variation within populations persists because it is invisible to …
