Global Component Of Sentiment In Futures Markets: Evidence From Covid-19 Pandemic, Abhinava Tripathi, Alok Dixit Nov 2023

Global Component Of Sentiment In Futures Markets: Evidence From Covid-19 Pandemic, Abhinava Tripathi, Alok Dixit

American Business Review

We examine the impact of the global component of sentiment on the price return and volatility of 25 major futures market indices across the globe, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The global component of sentiment causes investor overreactions. These overreactions accelerate the fall in prices and contribute to the rising volatility levels. The futures prices revert, though gradually, to their fundamental values as information from more reliable sources becomes available. This leads to price recovery and lower volatility levels.

Information Sharing In A Green Supply Chain With A Common Retailer, Abdul Quadir, Alok Raj Nov 2023

Information Sharing In A Green Supply Chain With A Common Retailer, Abdul Quadir, Alok Raj

American Business Review

In the paper, we analyze the problem of information sharing in a green supply chain with two competing manufacturers selling environmentally friendly substitutable products in markets through a common retailer. We develop a game-theoretic framework of a network supply chain structure. The study shows that (a) the manufacturer is better off while the retailer is worse off when the retailer shares his private information with the manufacturer; (b) the equilibrium greening levels are the highest when both the manufacturers are informed; (c) under intense competition, the retailer has an incentive to share the information with the manufacturer; (d) the equilibrium …

Configuring Hrm Practices For Open Innovation: But Can It Deliver?, Malay Biswas, Nirmalya Bandyopadhyay Nov 2023

Configuring Hrm Practices For Open Innovation: But Can It Deliver?, Malay Biswas, Nirmalya Bandyopadhyay

American Business Review

Though current scholarly interest generates a sustained growth of literature on open innovation, we need to learn more about human resource practices relating to open innovation. Building on the ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) framework, we demonstrate the differential impact of human resources practice bundles on open innovation. We also find evidence that motivation-enhancing and competency-enhancing practices share a compensating effect on open innovation. Using firm-level data from 2540 Italian manufacturing firms, our study, if not first, contributes to the growing bodies of research on open innovation by bringing forth the human dimension to the forefront and offering a drilled-down practice-level view that …

Biomarkers In Borrelia Burgdorferi Infected Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Sambuddha Paul Aug 2023

Biomarkers In Borrelia Burgdorferi Infected Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Sambuddha Paul

Master's Theses

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. Although some studies have attempted to identify new biomarkers and therapies, only a few have shown promise in clinical trials. In the context of cancer development, infectious agents rank as the third major risk factor, contributing to approximately 15-20% of cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. Hence, the identification of biomarkers associated with infection-originated cancer is crucial for enhancing cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, has been linked to TNBC …

Rattus Norvegicus As A Biological Detector Of Clandestine Remains And The Use Of Ultrasonic Vocalizations As A Locating Mechanism, Gabrielle M. Johnston May 2023

Rattus Norvegicus As A Biological Detector Of Clandestine Remains And The Use Of Ultrasonic Vocalizations As A Locating Mechanism, Gabrielle M. Johnston

Master's Theses

In investigations, locating missing persons and clandestine remains are imperative. One way that first responder and police agencies can search for the remains is by using cadaver dogs as biological detectors. Cadaver dogs are typically used due to their olfactory sensitivity and ability to detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds produced by biological remains. Cadaver dogs are typically chosen for their stamina, agility, and olfactory sensitivity. However, what is not taken into account often is the size of the animal and the expense of maintaining and training the animal. Cadaver dogs are typically large breeds that cannot fit in …

Relational Job Design Based Cognitive Pathways To Employee Entrepreneurial Behaviour, Roshni Das May 2023

Relational Job Design Based Cognitive Pathways To Employee Entrepreneurial Behaviour, Roshni Das

American Business Review

Knowledge based work requires that employees know how to deal with ambiguity and to get ahead of it by being innovative, proactive and risk-taking. These three traits together constitute what is known as employee entrepreneurial behavior (EEB) which is a crucial competence in organizations that operate in dynamic environments. There is however a complex combination of cognitions and metacognitions that effective knowledge workers undertake to make sense of their environment; and these cognitive pathways are not yet fully understood. This is the gap that the current study aims to fill. Data were collected from 285 white collar workers and their …

Urban Crime And Its Net Implicit Price To North Carolina Households, Bishwa Koirala, Rik Chakraborti, Gyan Pradhan May 2023

Urban Crime And Its Net Implicit Price To North Carolina Households, Bishwa Koirala, Rik Chakraborti, Gyan Pradhan

American Business Review

This study investigates the impact of urban crime rates—property and violent—on wages and rents and estimates the net implicit monetary value of crime rates for living in metropolitan areas, using the American Community Survey 2019 data for cities in North Carolina. A seemingly unrelated regression estimation finds that the crime rates are capitalized into both wages and rents, and suggests crime rates affect wages positively and rents negatively. This investigation estimates a negative value of $51.80 per month—the average net marginal implicit price—for living in cities with high city crime rates. This negative value suggests that households are being compensated …

Demystifying The Effect Of High-Performance Work Systems On Job Involvement Based On Dual-Path Mediation Model, Aastha Tripathi, Aalok Kumar

American Business Review

This study investigates the links between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and job involvement (JI) via organizational justice (OJ) and employee well-being (EW) as mediators. The proposed social exchange theory-based research framework is used to demystify the role of HPWS on job involvement. The proposed framework is validated with ten five-star hotels in India through structural equation modelling. The model reliability and robustness of constructs are tested with confirmatory factor analysis. The findings indicate that organizations must pay close attention to the perceptions of organizational justice and employee wellbeing to foster greater job involvement in their workforce. The positive relationship between …

The Fiscal Transmission Mechanism Of Inflation, Robert Gmeiner, Sven Larson May 2023

The Fiscal Transmission Mechanism Of Inflation, Robert Gmeiner, Sven Larson

American Business Review

The link between money creation and inflation has been theoretically demonstrated, but different inflation responses to Federal Reserve activity after the Great Recession and COVID recession showed the incomplete nature of the theory. We model a “fiscal transmission mechanism” whereby Federal Reserve purchases of Treasury securities lead to inflation as new dollars flow through fiscal deficits into the economy. In our model, other Federal Reserve activity generally lacks inflationary effects. Using a nonstructural vector autoregression approach, we test for the presence of this mechanism and offer near perfect predictions of the 2022 inflation rate using a time series extending back …

Nexus Between Travel & Leisure Stocks And Uncertainties: An Extreme Risk Spillover Analysis, Dilip Kumar

American Business Review

The paper examines the presence of risk spillover to the US travel & leisure industry from the extreme changes in the uncertainties. More specifically, using a time-varying copula based conditional Value-at-Risk (CoVaR) framework, we evaluate the dynamic impact of the uncertainties on the extreme risk of the US travel & leisure industry by taking into consideration the uncertainty in economic policy, equity market conditions, and crude oil prices. The findings indicate a significant dynamic inverse relationship between the returns of travel & leisure industry and changes in uncertainty variables. The results further indicate the stronger sensitivity of the travel & …

Trace Dna Detection Using Diamond Dye: A Recovery Technique To Yield More Dna, Leah Davis May 2023

Trace Dna Detection Using Diamond Dye: A Recovery Technique To Yield More Dna, Leah Davis

Master's Theses

This study aspires to find a new screening approach to trace DNA recovery techniques to yield a higher quantity of trace DNA from larger items of evidence. It takes the path of visualizing trace DNA on items of evidence with potential DNA so analysts can swab a more localized area rather than attempting to recover trace DNA through the general swabbing technique currently used for trace DNA recovery. The first and second parts consisted of observing trace DNA interaction with Diamond Dye on porous and non-porous surfaces.

The third part involved applying the Diamond Dye solution by spraying it onto …

An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Degradation On Irisplex Snps, Maria Gruber May 2023

An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Degradation On Irisplex Snps, Maria Gruber

Master's Theses

The information from short tandem repeats (STRs), the current standard forensic DNA typing technology, does not always result in identification. In these cases, there are other informative markers in DNA that can be used to help generate investigative leads, one of which is single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). One of the uses of SNPs is for phenotype determination. Among the phenotypic characteristics that can be predicted is eye color. A commonly used tool for eye color prediction is the free, online statistical prediction model IrisPlex, which includes 6 SNPs known to control eye color.

While SNPs can be useful, they, like …

Evaluation Of Raman Microspectroscopy And Hyperspectral Imaging As A Screening Tool To Determine Optimal Sampling Sites For Dna Recovery From Human Skeletal Remains, Kathleen M. Smith Apr 2023

Evaluation Of Raman Microspectroscopy And Hyperspectral Imaging As A Screening Tool To Determine Optimal Sampling Sites For Dna Recovery From Human Skeletal Remains, Kathleen M. Smith

Master's Theses

Numerous challenges exist with forensic genetic testing of human skeletal remains due to diagenesis patterns in bone microstructure, DNA degradation, and the presence of PCR inhibitors. Diagenesis is the microscopic breakdown of the bone matrix, which consists primarily of mineralized calcium hydroxyapatite and collagen. The process of diagenesis occurs in a heterogeneous, non-uniform manner along the diaphysis of a long bone, and determining the region with the most intact bone microstructure is not possible with the naked eye. Therefore, taking cuttings from the diaphysis for DNA testing is somewhat of a “blind” process, and decades of research and casework have …

Serviceability Analysis And Feasibility Study Of Rooftop Pv System On Commercial Buildings In New York City, Daniel A. Shedo Apr 2023

Serviceability Analysis And Feasibility Study Of Rooftop Pv System On Commercial Buildings In New York City, Daniel A. Shedo

Master's Theses

Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) blocks (Ballasts) to counterbalance an uplift wind pressure on Photovoltaic (PV) panels have been used widely. In contrast to mechanically attaching PV panels through penetration of a roof slab, the use of CMU blocks is preferred by many building owners, as penetrating and attaching the panels to a roof slab will pose a serious threat to the warranty of roof membranes, which typically last for 30 years. On the other hand, placing CMU blocks along with PV panels and other system components on a rooftop slab adds additional dead load, which may raise a concern regarding …
