How Policies Portray Students: A Discourse Analysis Of Codes Of Conduct In Academic Libraries, Megan Bresnahan
How Policies Portray Students: A Discourse Analysis Of Codes Of Conduct In Academic Libraries, Megan Bresnahan
Faculty Publications
In academic libraries, “codes of conduct” are policies that define what people who use those libraries are allowed to do in library spaces and serve as rules for enforcement. In this policy discourse analysis, the author examines these policies to understand what dominant discourses emerge about students who use libraries. The discourses represented in these policies portray students through frames of deficit thinking, adultism, exclusion, and surveillance. The study advocates for a critical shift in the design and purpose of these policies, and the results may inspire academic librarians to revise their policies to center care and respect for students.
Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde6): Activation And Inactivation Mechanisms During Visual Transduction In Rods And Cones, Rick H. Cote
Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase (Pde6): Activation And Inactivation Mechanisms During Visual Transduction In Rods And Cones, Rick H. Cote
Faculty Publications
Rod and cone photoreceptors of the vertebrate retina utilize cGMP as the primary
intracellular messenger for the visual signaling pathway that converts a light stimulus into an electrical response. cGMP metabolism in the signal-transducing photoreceptor outer segment reflects the balance of cGMP synthesis (catalyzed by guanylyl cyclase) and degradation (catalyzed by the photoreceptor phosphodiesterase, PDE6). Upon light stimulation, rapid activation of PDE6 by the heterotrimeric G-protein (transducin) triggers a dramatic drop in cGMP levels that lead to cell hyperpolarization. Following cessation of the light stimulus, the lifetime of activated PDE6 is also precisely regulated by additional processes. This review summarizes …

Foodborne Pathogens And Water Quality In Commercial-Scale Aquaponic Systems With Rapid Micro Screen Solids Removal, Sean Zachary Fogarty
Foodborne Pathogens And Water Quality In Commercial-Scale Aquaponic Systems With Rapid Micro Screen Solids Removal, Sean Zachary Fogarty
Master's Theses and Capstones
To meet global nutritional needs, humans need to produce an ever-increasing amount of food with dwindling natural resources. Demand for nutritious foods, particularly lean meat, fruits, and vegetables, is rapidly accelerating. To increase the intensity of production and utilize non-arable land, many growers are turning to controlled environment agriculture systems like hydroponic crop production and aquaculture (fish farming), but these are inherently inefficient in terms of water and nutrient utilization. Aquaponics is a relatively novel agricultural method that combines hydroponic and aquacultural production models to mitigate many of the costs—both realized and implicit, environmental and economic—associated with either production model …

Sediment Characteristics, Sources, And Transport Pathways Of Highly Engineered, Paraglacial Beaches: New Hampshire, Usa, Nathan Corcoran
Sediment Characteristics, Sources, And Transport Pathways Of Highly Engineered, Paraglacial Beaches: New Hampshire, Usa, Nathan Corcoran
Master's Theses and Capstones
Coastal systems are under threat from multiple factors including sea-level rise, climate change, and anthropogenic development. As a result, beach erosion is a major problem along much of the U.S. coastline, including New Hampshire (NH). To combat coastal erosion, engineering solutions such as beach nourishment will likely be utilized. However, to be effective, the natural beach system must be understood. In order to characterize grain size properties, assess sediment sources, and develop conceptual models relating beach morphology, stability, and sediment sources for paraglacial beaches, seven major beaches in NH were studied in 2017. Elevation profiles were measured, and sediment samples …

Fourteen Tips For Cultivating Your Entrepreneurial Community, Charles A. French
Fourteen Tips For Cultivating Your Entrepreneurial Community, Charles A. French
UNH Cooperative Extension
An entrepreneurial community is a community that intentionally acts to cultivate and support entrepreneurs. Focusing on building business and economic development from within is a key alternative strategy to industrial recruitment, which seeks to draw enterprise from outside of the community. In fact, it has proven to be more effective at job creation in more rural places that do not have the infrastructure to draw business and industry.

Composition As Bodily Rhetoric: A Multimodal Understanding Of Student-Athlete Literacy Practices, Samantha Ellyn Donnelly
Composition As Bodily Rhetoric: A Multimodal Understanding Of Student-Athlete Literacy Practices, Samantha Ellyn Donnelly
Doctoral Dissertations
“Composition as Bodily Rhetoric: A Multimodal Understanding of Student-Athlete Literacy Practices” examines aspects of the lives, scholarly identities, and different writing that student-athletes engage in while on the field for their sport and off the field in their academics. Utilizing embodied rhetoric in communication and forms of technical writing, I challenge the notion that academics and athletics are working toward contradictory aims. Through examining the embodied learning within the writing process and drawing connections between writing studies and sports discourse, my work illuminates the complexities of the composing processes of student-athletes and examines how they can bring these advanced composing …
Modeling And Assessing The Sustainability Of Distributed Solar Photovoltaics Adoption, Mingcheng Ren
Modeling And Assessing The Sustainability Of Distributed Solar Photovoltaics Adoption, Mingcheng Ren
Doctoral Dissertations
Participation of distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) generation in the organized electricity wholesale market is expected to increase under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order 2222 announced in 2020. Our understanding about the technical, economic, and environmental tradeoffs and co-benefits of solar PV adoption on both building and regional scales remains limited, especially considering the complexity of varied distributed solar PV-battery system designs and operation strategies as well as the dynamic interactions of these distributed generations with the centralized grid. This dissertation therefore aims to investigate the grid load reduction, life cycle cost, and life cycle environmental (e.g., carbon, water, and …
Genomic And Physiological Bioremediation Characteristics Of The Actinobacteria Frankia, Erik Swanson
Genomic And Physiological Bioremediation Characteristics Of The Actinobacteria Frankia, Erik Swanson
Doctoral Dissertations
Introduction: Frankia is a genus of symbiotic, nitrogen fixing actinobacteria found in the soil and root tissue of actinorhizal plants throughout the world. Both Frankia and actinorhizal plants are resistant to a wide range of environmental and chemical stresses including heavy metals, high salinity, and drought. This makes Frankia and the actinorhizal symbiosis an interesting candidate for bioremediation applications. However, the microbial community found in the actinorhizal rhizosphere and surrounding soil has been implicated in some of the symbiotic and resistance traits attributed to Frankia. This necessitates thorough investigation of the genomic and genetic components of any bioremediation traits possessed …
Micromechanical Modeling And Evaluation Of Process-Induced Residual Stresses In 3d Woven Composites, Kostiantyn Vasylevskyi
Micromechanical Modeling And Evaluation Of Process-Induced Residual Stresses In 3d Woven Composites, Kostiantyn Vasylevskyi
Doctoral Dissertations
3D woven carbon/epoxy composites are high-performance materials with superior thermo-mechanical and physical properties making them an integral part of the aerospace, energy and automotive industries. However, under certain manufacturing conditions, these composites may accumulate severe intrinsic manufacturing-induced residual stresses which can even lead to microcracking. The complex reinforcement architecture makes analytical, numerical and experimental analysis of these composites challenging. This research has been focused on micromechanical analysis, computational modeling, and experimental characterization of 3D woven carbon/epoxy composites aiming to evaluate the manufacturing-induced residual stresses and enable mitigation of their negative impact on the resulting performance. A procedure to develop high-fidelity …
From An Insect To The Classroom: Evolutionary Insights Into The Ecological And Behavioral Impacts Of Experience, Brooke Kathleen Woelber-Kastner
From An Insect To The Classroom: Evolutionary Insights Into The Ecological And Behavioral Impacts Of Experience, Brooke Kathleen Woelber-Kastner
Doctoral Dissertations
Organisms exhibit suites of life history traits which enable them to respond to environmental stimuli and increase fitness. However, the relationship between organism traits and the environment is not unidirectional, rather they are in a state of constant interaction. To further our understanding of the interactions between the environment and organism phenotypes, this dissertation focuses on a group of insect scavengers, the burying beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae: Nicrophorus) which utilize carrion to initiate reproduction and feed developing young. Here I apply ecological and molecular methodologies to demonstrate that behaviors provide an important ecological service by sequestering carrion in forest ecosystems. I …

Presentation Slides For Implementing Socially Just Climate Adaptation: A Case Study Of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeffrey T. Malloy
Doctoral Dissertations
The urgency to adapt to climate change presents important questions about who stands to benefit from these efforts. The previous two decades of scholarship devoted to social justice in climate adaptation has established an important theoretical basis to evaluate these questions. Less understood however, is how and under what conditions climate adaptation policy implementation promotes or inhibits justice for socially vulnerable populations. This work draws upon the disciplines of urban climate change governance, climate adaptation, urban planning, social justice theory, and policy implementation, to evaluate ongoing climate adaptation policy initiatives in Boston, Massachusetts. Through a case study approach, this dissertation …
Investigation Of Parameter Effects On Impact Welding And Modelling Of Process, Shunyi Zhang
Investigation Of Parameter Effects On Impact Welding And Modelling Of Process, Shunyi Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
There is a growing interest in creating light weight structures in various industries such as automobile, electronics, and aerospace in order to reduce energy consumption. One means to achieve mass reductions is to join or weld dissimilar materials to create lightweight structures. However, traditional fusion welding processes cannot be used for such dissimilar materials applications due to differences in material characteristics and the tendency to form brittle intermetallic compounds. One approach to join dissimilar materials is through high speed impact welding. With appropriate process parameters, a wavy interfacial morphology is commonly obtained at the interface of the two impact welded …
Characterizing Forest Stands Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) Digital Photogrammetry: Advancements And Challenges In Monitoring Local Scale Forest Composition, Structure, And Health, Benjamin T. Fraser
Doctoral Dissertations
Present-day forests provide a wide variety of ecosystem services to the communities that rely on them. At the same time, these environments face routine and substantial disturbances that direct the need for site-specific, timely, and accurate monitoring/management (i.e., precision forestry). Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS or UAV) and their associated technologies offer a promising tool for conducting such precision forestry. Now, even with only natural color, uncalibrated, UAS imagery, software workflows involving Structure from Motion (SfM) (i.e., digital photogrammetry) modelling and segmentation can be used to characterize the features of individual trees or forest communities. In this research, we tested the …

Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti
Doctoral Dissertations
In laboratory courses across universities, undergraduate students are learning to act, think, and write like professional scientists. Yet, despite the centrality of language and literacy in laboratory experiments, the process of becoming scientifically literate remains ambiguous. Thus, my dissertation examines how university laboratory courses foster undergraduate students’ emergence as literate professionals and competent communicators in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. In particular, it examines undergraduate students’ literate practices, how they change over time, and how they are affected by material and experimental processes in three sequenced, chemistry laboratory courses. Through laboratory observations and interviews with undergraduate students, faculty, …

Mechanistic Insights Into Relationship Between Network Architecture, Polymerization Kinetics, And Macromolecular Properties, Chang Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
Given the rising of environmental concern, the market of waterborne coating and adhesives has been constantly growing. Polymer latex particles produced by emulsion polymerization are one type of important components in their formulations. Thus, to tune mechanical properties of waterborne coatings and adhesives, one of the common ways is to utilize crosslinkers to form a macromolecular network structure, as known as “gel”, inside of the polymer latex. A major challenge to obtain desired properties of the material is how to control macromolecular architecture, such as sol-gel ratio and crosslinking density. Hence, this dissertation focuses on the study of predicting and …
