We investigated changes in soil chemistry and foliar metabolism of Himalayan cedar [Cedrus deodara (Roxb. Ex Lamb.) G.Don] and Himalayan spruce [Picea smithiana (Wall.) Boiss] trees along a steep elevational gradient in the lower Himalayan Mountains at Kufri, Himachal Pradesh (HP), India. The foliar and soil samples were collected from four locations along a 300 m elevational gradient at ridge, high-, mid-, and low-elevation sites within the forested Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary that provides water for the city of Shimla, HP,. Observations at the time of sampling revealed that the high-elevation site was being heavily grazed. Soils collected at …

Unvaccinated Granite Staters More Anxious And Depressed Than Vaccinated 3/26/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
New Hampshire residents are less depressed than they were in December while feelings of anxiety are unchanged. However, those who have not yet been vaccinated are more than twice as likely as those who have been vaccinated to report feelings of anxiety and depression.

Nh Slowly Returning To Normal; Most Plan To Spend More Post-Pandemic 3/26/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Most New Hampshire residents are comfortable going to a restaurant and getting their hair done but many remain uncomfortable going to places like bars, gyms, and movie theaters. Many Granite Staters anticipate spending more on visits to theme parks, museums, outdoor recreation, and hotels once the pandemic is over. Half plan to spend all or most of their stimulus check rather than save it, particularly middle and lower income households.

Carsey Publications
In this report, authors Quixada Moore-Vissing and Bruce Mallory build on previous Indexes published in 2006, 2009, and 2013 to take stock of New Hampshire's civic well-being in light of the changes the state has experienced in recent years. Their research draws on data from the U.S. Census, the Social Capital Community Benchmarks survey, and the UNH Granite State Poll.

All UNH Survey Center Polls
One-third of Granite Staters report receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, including more than four in five residents aged 65 and older, but about one-quarter say they will probably or definitely not get vaccinated. The vast majority of those who have received a shot report mild side effects or none at all. About half of those who plan to get vaccinated have a preferred vaccine, but most would take whatever vaccine was available if they could not get their preferred one. More than three-quarters of those who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine …

Retaining Eucalyptus Harvest Residues Promotes Different Pathways For Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Matter, Gabriel W. D. Ferreira, Fernanda C. C. Oliveira, Emanuelle M. B. Soares, Jorg Schnecker, Ivo R. Silva, A. Stuart Grandy

Eucalyptus plantations have replaced other (agro)ecosystems over 5.6 Mha in Brazil. While these plantations rapidly accumulate carbon (C) in their biomass, the C storage in living forest biomass is transient, and thus, longer-term sustainability relies on sustaining soil organic matter (SOM) stocks. A significant amount of harvest residues (HR) is generated every rotation and can yield SOM if retained in the field. Yet, there is little information on how managing eucalyptus HR changes SOM dynamics. We used isotopic and molecular approaches in a 3-yr field decomposition experiment where a native grassland has been replaced by eucalyptus plantations to assess how …

A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber
A Cfar Detection Approach For Identifying Gas Bubble Seeps With Multibeam Echo Sounders, Thomas C. Weber
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A cell-averaged constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector is described and applied to data collected with a multibeam echo sounder (MBES). The CFAR detector is designed specifically for transient targets observed with MBES, and operates under the assumption that background noise, including volume and seafloor reverberation, is locally stationary in time. This assumption, and the CFAR detector performance in general, was examined for data collected by a 30-kHz MBES operating in the Gulf of Mexico where the targets of interest were methane gas bubble plumes rising up from the seabed. Results with example data suggest that the CFAR detector was …

Granite Staters Support Stand Your Ground Expansion, Right-To-Work; Oppose Vouchers And Life-Sentence Reform 3/24/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
New Hampshire residents support a bill to expand the state's "stand your ground" use of force law to include defending oneself in a vehicle. A plurality support a "right-to-work" bill and a bill prohibiting abortion after 24 weeks. A voucher system for education funding and a bill ending life-without-parole sentences in the state are not supported. Governor Chris Sununu's job approval and personal popularity have dipped since February but remain high.

Biden Approval Holds Steady; Nearly Half Of Granite Staters Support Filibuster Reform 3/23/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
President Joe Biden remains more popular in New Hampshire than former President Donald Trump and a majority approve of Biden's job performance. Perceptions of Trump among Republicans have rebounded somewhat since January and two-thirds of Republicans in the Granite State would like him to run for President again in 2024. Nearly half of Granite Staters want the Senate's filibuster rule to be eliminated entirely or changed to require senators to continue speaking in order to continue a filibuster.

Aerosol sulfate is a major component of submicron particulate matter (PM1). Sulfate can be present as inorganic (mainly ammonium sulfate, AS) or organosulfate (OS). Although OS is thought to be a smaller fraction of total sulfate in most cases, recent literature argues that this may not be the case in more polluted environments. Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers (AMSs) measure total submicron sulfate, but it has been difficult to apportion AS vs. OS as the detected ion fragments are similar. Recently, two new methods have been proposed to quantify OS separately from AS with AMS data. We use observations collected during …

Major multi-reservoir cascades represent a primary mechanism for dealing with hydrologic variability and extremes within institutionally complex river basins worldwide. These coordinated management processes fundamentally reshape water balance dynamics. Yet, multi-reservoir coordination processes have been largely ignored in the increasingly sophisticated representations of reservoir operations within large-scale hydrological models. The aim of this paper is twofold, namely (i) to provide evidence that the common modeling practice of parameterizing each reservoir in a cascade independently from the others is a significant approximation and (ii) to demonstrate potential unintended consequences of this independence approximation when simulating the dynamics of hydrological extremes in …
