Sensitivity And Threshold Dynamics Of Pinus Strobus And Quercus Spp. In Response To Experimental And Naturally-Occurring Severe Droughts, Heidi Asbjornsen, Cameron D. Mcintire, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Katie A. Jennings, Adam P. Coble, Z. Carter Berry

All Materials

Increased drought frequency and severity are a pervasive global threat, yet the capacity of mesic temperate forests to maintain resilience in response to drought remains poorly understood. We deployed a throughfall removal experiment to simulate a once in a century drought in New Hampshire, USA, which coupled with the region-wide 2016 drought, intensified moisture stress beyond that experienced in the lifetimes of our study trees. To assess the sensitivity and threshold dynamics of two dominant northeastern tree genera (Quercus and Pinus), we monitored sap flux density (Js), leaf water potential and gas exchange, growth, and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) …

Warming Temperatures Increase Microbial Consumption Of Marine Organic Matter, Sarah Benson May 2021

Warming Temperatures Increase Microbial Consumption Of Marine Organic Matter, Sarah Benson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Marine microbes are vital to oceanic ecosystems and influence the global climate through their paramount role in Earth’s biogeochemical cycles. With this intricate role in ecosystems, it is important to understand the effect of increasing ocean temperatures on the cycling of organic matter (OM), which is hypothesized to contribute a positive feedback to future warming via an acceleration in microbial respiration of OM to CO2. We experimentally investigated the temperature sensitivity of microbial consumption of marine particulate OM focused in the rapidly warming Gulf of Maine during the 2019 and 2020 Fall phytoplankton bloom. The overall rate and quantity of …

An Assessment Of The Use Of Green Stormwater Infrastructure For Flood Mitigation At Berry Brook, Rachel Lynn Hastings May 2021

An Assessment Of The Use Of Green Stormwater Infrastructure For Flood Mitigation At Berry Brook, Rachel Lynn Hastings

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research examined the effectiveness of GSI and other BMPs to control urban flooding for extreme precipitation events and compared the impacts of increasing impervious cover with the impacts of increasing rainfall intensity caused by climate change. The City of Dover has spent the last decade implementing best management practices in the 185-acre Berry Brook watershed to combat stream pollution and flooding caused by urbanization. Improvements to the watershed included building additional headwater wetland area, daylighting and restoring 1,100 feet of stream, and redirecting stormwater to GSIs, thereby reducing the effective impervious cover from 30% to 10%. Four PCSWMM models …

Where Do You Look? Relating Visual Attention To Learning Outcomes And Url Parsing, Niveta Ramkumar May 2021

Where Do You Look? Relating Visual Attention To Learning Outcomes And Url Parsing, Niveta Ramkumar

Master's Theses and Capstones

Visual behavior provides a dynamic trail of where attention is directed. It is considered the behavioral interface between engagement and gaining information, and researchers have used it for several decades to study user's behavior. This thesis focuses on employing visual attention to understand user's behavior in two contexts: 3D learning and gauging URL safety. Such understanding is valuable for improving interactive tools and interface designs. In the first chapter, we present results from studying learners' visual behavior while engaging with tangible and virtual 3D representations of objects. This is a replication of a recent study, and we extended it using …

Oil Spill Modeling For Improved Response To Arctic Maritime Spills: The Path Forward, Megan Patricia Verfaillie May 2021

Oil Spill Modeling For Improved Response To Arctic Maritime Spills: The Path Forward, Megan Patricia Verfaillie

Master's Theses and Capstones

Maritime shipping and natural resource development in the Arctic are projected to increase as sea ice coverage decreases, resulting in a greater probability of more and larger oil spills. The increasing risk of Arctic spills emphasizes the need to identify the state-of-the-art oil trajectory and sea ice models and the potential for their integration. The Oil Spill Modeling for Improved Response to Arctic Maritime Spills: The Path Forward (AMSM) project, funded by the Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC), provides a structured approach to gather expert advice to address U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC) core needs for decision-making. …

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: A Social-Ecological Approach To Sustainably Managing Outdoor Recreation Visitation In Parks And Protected Areas, Georgia Ann Giles

Master's Theses and Capstones

Parks and protected areas visitation in the United States has increased substantially over the past several decades, and dramatically within the past few years. This expansion in visitation raises concerns regarding the influence of social, situational, and ecological factors upon visitor experiences, natural resources, and adjacent communities. This study investigated the relationship between three influencing factors and visitors’ behaviors and decision-making on the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) of New Hampshire. A mail-back and online survey method was used to collect data from WMNF visitors from June to August of 2020 (n= 642). Structural equation modeling and binary logistic regression …

Progress On The Use Of Surface-Immobilized Elastin-Like Polymers As A Stimuli-Responsive Biosensor For Interleukin-6 Detection, Marissa Morales May 2021

Progress On The Use Of Surface-Immobilized Elastin-Like Polymers As A Stimuli-Responsive Biosensor For Interleukin-6 Detection, Marissa Morales

Doctoral Dissertations

Elastin-Like-Polymers (ELPs) are intrinsically disordered biopolymers with an amino acid structure comprised of the pentapeptide repeat sequence [VPGXG]n (V = valine, P = proline, G = glycine, X = guest residue, and n = total number of repeat sequences). ELPs are stimuli-responsive meaning below their transition temperature, ELPs are structurally disordered, highly solvated, and soluble in aqueous solutions. Above their transition temperature, ELPs experience coalescence and phase separation as intermolecular and intramolecular contacts form within the hydrophobic regions of the ELPs. The transition temperature of ELPs is influenced by the hydrophobic surface area, as well as changing solvent conditions including …

Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background Measurement With The Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (Ascot), Tejaswita Sharma May 2021

Cosmic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background Measurement With The Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (Ascot), Tejaswita Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary goal of my research was to measure the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray (CDG) background in the energy range of 0.4 - 2.5 MeV using the balloon flight data from the Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (ASCOT). ASCOT is a medium-energy gamma-ray Compton telescope that uses commercially available high performance scintillators—Cerium Bromide (CeBr3) and p-terphenyl—along with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for light readout. It was built to address the lack of data in the gamma-ray energy range of 0.4 - 20 MeV. ASCOT was successfully launched on 2018 July 5 from the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, TX. We performed …

Existence Of Mutual Stabilization In Chaotic Neural Models, John Parker May 2021

Existence Of Mutual Stabilization In Chaotic Neural Models, John Parker

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent work has demonstrated that interacting chaotic systems can establish persistent, periodic behavior, called mutual stabilization, when certain information is passed through interaction functions. In particular, this was first shown with two interacting cupolets (Chaotic Unstable Periodic Orbit-lets) of the double scroll oscillator. Cupolets are highly accurate approximations of unstable periodic orbits of a chaotic attractor that can be generated through a control scheme that repeatedly applies perturbations along Poincaré sections. The decision to perturb or not to perturb the trajectory is determined by a bit in a binary control sequence. One interaction function used in the original cupolet research …

Mathematical Analysis Of A Model Of Blood Flow Through A Channel With Flexible Walls, Madeline Mayes Edwards May 2021

Mathematical Analysis Of A Model Of Blood Flow Through A Channel With Flexible Walls, Madeline Mayes Edwards

Doctoral Dissertations

The present research is devoted to the problem of stability of the fluid flow moving in a channel with flexible walls and interacting with the walls. The walls of the vessel conveying fluid are subject to traveling waves. Experimental data shows that the energy of the flowing fluid can be transferred and consumed by the structure (the walls), which induces “traveling wave flutter.” The problem of stability of fluid-structure interaction splits into two parts: (i) stability of fluid flow in the channel with harmonically moving walls and (ii) stability of solid structure participating in the energy exchange with the flow. …

Ecological Interactions Of The Trematode Parasite Zoogonus Rubellus And Its First And Second Intermediate Hosts, Sara Edquist May 2021

Ecological Interactions Of The Trematode Parasite Zoogonus Rubellus And Its First And Second Intermediate Hosts, Sara Edquist

Doctoral Dissertations

Trematode parasites are ubiquitous in marine environments and their importance in ecological function is becoming increasingly recognized, impacting host behaviors, food web dynamics, and community diversity. Trematodes are inextricably tied to their hosts. Therefore, to understand the role of trematodes it is essential to understand their relationships with their hosts. Trematodes typically utilize first intermediate, second intermediate, and definitive hosts to complete their life cycle. Second intermediate hosts are underrepresented in trematode research. Most parasite models and theory are thus incomplete as they rarely include this life stage of the parasite. This research examines the relationship between the trematode Zoogonus …

Qunatum Transport Phenomena And Non-Trivial Spin Structures, Domenico Andreoli May 2021

Qunatum Transport Phenomena And Non-Trivial Spin Structures, Domenico Andreoli

Doctoral Dissertations

Quantum Transport is an important part of condensed matter physics. With the discoveryof non-trivial spin textures new transport phenomena have given rise to possible alternatives to conventional electronic devices. Studying how these phenomena occur is of utmost importance to the success of these new devices. A theoretical understanding is developed through out this thesis with focus on 2-D spin textures known as Skyrmions. The main topic discussed through-out these works will be how the condensed matter community at large thinks the Skyrmion is directly responsible for what is known as the Topological Hall Effect. It will be argued that the …

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Police Officer Acquittals: Jurors' Explicit And Implicit Racism, Donovan Corson Kelley May 2021

Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Police Officer Acquittals: Jurors' Explicit And Implicit Racism, Donovan Corson Kelley

Doctoral Dissertations

Less than .001% of cases involving police officers killing suspects result in trial convictions; acquittals are significantly higher for Black victims than for White victims. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine if explicit and implicit racism amongst jurors helped explain why police officers are rarely convicted of murder, especially in cases with Black victims. In a pilot study in which mock jurors read a trial summary involving an officer killing an unarmed victim who was either Black or White, jurors were more likely acquit officers on trial for killing a Black victim than a White victim. In Study …

During her life she published Improvisation for the Theater which is essential reading for anyone interested in doing improvisational theater as well as Theater Games for The Classroom where she adapted some of her techniques and games to an educational setting outside of theater. Along with these works, I was able to examine two of her unpublished works, a handbook on education and What’s Your Score? as well as various notes, correspondences and interviews housed …

Speeding-Up A Random Search For The Global Minimum Of A Non-Convex, Non-Smooth Objective Function, Arnold C. Englander May 2021

Speeding-Up A Random Search For The Global Minimum Of A Non-Convex, Non-Smooth Objective Function, Arnold C. Englander

Doctoral Dissertations

The need to find the global minimum of a highly non-convex, non-smooth objective function over a high-dimensional and possibly disconnected, feasible domain, within a practical amount of computing time, arises in many fields. Such objective functions and/or feasible domains are so poorly-behaved that gradient-based optimization methods are useful only locally – if at all. Random search methods offer a viable alternative, but their convergence properties are not well-studied. The present work adapts a proof by Baba et al. (1977) to establish asymptotic convergence for Monotonic Basin Hopping, a random search method used in molecular modeling and interplanetary spacecraft trajectory optimization. …

Toward A Feminist Rhetorical Strategy Of Sass: Sheila Hibben As America’S Early 20th Century Culinary Influencer, Meaghan Elliott Dittrich May 2021

Toward A Feminist Rhetorical Strategy Of Sass: Sheila Hibben As America’S Early 20th Century Culinary Influencer, Meaghan Elliott Dittrich

Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation restores to the canon of women’s rhetorical history a voice who, in her time of the early twentieth century, made a mark on the world of food writing. By identifying Sheila Hibben’s rhetorical strategy of sass as a method of critiquing hierarchies and as a feminist rhetorical practice, my work contributes to the field of rhetoric and composition. This dissertation defines and deconstructs Sheila Hibben’s sass as a rhetorical strategy during two essential periods of economic crises—the Great Depression and World War II—to influence two audiences of white working- and upper-class housewives to eat well during times of national …

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Dynamics And Interactions In Nucleic Acids, Lev Levintov May 2021

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Dynamics And Interactions In Nucleic Acids, Lev Levintov

Doctoral Dissertations

In my thesis work, I conducted molecular simulation studies to explore dynamics and interactions in nucleic acids. I began my work by applying conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the local and global dynamics of the transactivation response (TAR) element from the type-1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) and the effect of binding of ligands on the dynamics of TAR RNA. I determined that the TAR RNA structure was stabilized on binding of ligands due to the decreased flexibility in helices that comprise TAR RNA. This rigidity of the TAR RNA structure was coupled with the decreased flipping of bulge …

Nickel – Iron Catalysts For Low Temperature Dry Reforming Of Methane, Gagandeep Dhillon May 2021

Nickel – Iron Catalysts For Low Temperature Dry Reforming Of Methane, Gagandeep Dhillon

Doctoral Dissertations

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers benefit of consuming two important greenhouse gases(CH4 and CO2) in a single reaction to produce syngas. Ni-based catalysts have been studied for DRM. However, monometallic Ni catalysts deactivate mainly because of coking. We were motivated to include earth-abundant promoter metals to suppress coke formation and studied a series of bimetallic nickel-iron catalysts supported over TiO2 and TiO2-CeO2 at 550˚C and atmospheric pressure. This dissertation mainly focuses on various approaches to synthesize Ni-Fe catalysts and examines the effect of oxide support modification over optimum Ni-Fe/TiO2 catalyst. In this context, Ni-Fe catalysts supported over TiO2 were …
