"Daylight Maximizing" Time For All, Rebecca Ray Apr 2022

"Daylight Maximizing" Time For All, Rebecca Ray

Carsey Publications

Twice a year debates erupt across the continental United States: should we keep Daylight Savings Time or leave it behind forever? The only preference with widespread agreement is against changing clocks, one way or the other. Perhaps all of the participants in this perennial argument have a common opponent: not each other, but the time zone lines as they are currently drawn.

Keeping Daylight Savings year-round would bring unreasonably late sunrises in Detroit and other cities in the Northwest corners of our current time zones, creating morning traffic hazards for pedestrians. But Standard Time brings winter sunsets before 5 p.m. …

Ultimate Graduation Party, Paige Mcafee Apr 2022

Ultimate Graduation Party, Paige Mcafee

M. S. in Project Management

“Ultimate Graduation Party” is about the planning, execution, and clean-up of a hypothetical graduation party for 45 guests. It will be an under the sea themed costume party with catering, a live DJ, photo booth, and more at a venue in southern New Hampshire. I chose this project because I felt that planning a party would be both fun and useful. The project management documents I create now can be used or altered by me to plan a variety of professional events in the future. The waterfall methodology was used to manage the project.

A video recording of this presentation …

Electricity In The Brain: Exploring Research Methods In Neuroscience, Vladimir Tkachev Apr 2022

Electricity In The Brain: Exploring Research Methods In Neuroscience, Vladimir Tkachev

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

Every person at some point in their life wonders how exactly their brains work to create their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Neuroscience is the field that deals with studying the biological and chemical processes underlying our brain’s operations. In this commentary, I give an overview of my experience learning the most commonly used research technique in neuroscience: electrophysiological recording. I had to learn this technique in preparation for my summer 2021 research project that dealt with a novel recording sensor for the neurotransmitter glutamate, and I hope to share the knowledge I gained with the readers of this journal. I …

The Evolution Of Assigned Reading: The Diversity In New Hampshire High School Reading And Student Reading Engagement, Julian Maduro Apr 2022

The Evolution Of Assigned Reading: The Diversity In New Hampshire High School Reading And Student Reading Engagement, Julian Maduro

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

The research on current high school reading lists is limited; however, studies suggest that high school literary curricula have remained nearly unchanged for the last thirty years. Since the reading lists of the 1990s were found to lack racial and gender diversity and to mostly contain texts written before the year 1965, an unchanged list would likely be unable to fit the demographics and interests of students today, potentially negatively impacting student reading engagement. This survey study investigated how high school reading lists in New Hampshire have evolved since the 1990s. New Hampshire high school English teachers were asked to …

The Relationship Between The Organization’S Aspirations For A Culture Of Diversity And Inclusion, Its Documents And Policy, And Employee Experience, Carolyn O'Driscoll

M.S. in Leadership

The purpose of this research study is to identify the relationship between an organization’s aspiration for a culture of diversity and inclusion, its documents and policy, and employee experience. Through analyzing the documents and policies of a small nonprofit organization and comparing the results of an employee survey focused on questions related to the current culture of diversity and inclusion in the organization it is the intent to identify any gaps that exist between these components. Research has shown that organizations that have a successful culture of diversity and inclusion have better outcomes, including increased employee engagement, retention, and increased …

Work-Life Balance, Aimee Lee Apr 2022

Work-Life Balance, Aimee Lee

M.S. in Leadership

This project was to identify if there is a work-life balance in the banking industry, and how managers understand the concept. Six managers of different demographics were surveyed and the results show three important themes; that the leaders need to have great knowledge of the work and their employees, that home issues and work issues need to be separate and balanced, and that excellent communication is required of both the leaders and the employees so that everyone can advocate successfully for their needs, and the needs of the corporation. The results will be shared with the Human Resources Department to …

Conducting Undergraduate Research To Honor The Voices Of Sexual And Gender Minority People Receiving Inpatient Mental Health Care, Jaylyn Jewel Apr 2022

Conducting Undergraduate Research To Honor The Voices Of Sexual And Gender Minority People Receiving Inpatient Mental Health Care, Jaylyn Jewel

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

Nursing is an art and a science, depicted by intimate care of patients physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It is the nurse’s role to advocate for the patient and assure that they receive the best care possible. There are many disparities present in healthcare, and as an aspiring nurse, it is important that I am aware of these inequalities. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients face many disparities, especially in the realm of mental health. These disparities have been attributed to the stigma SGM people experience related to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and may bring about a higher observance …

Bridging The Gap Between Science And Society To Foster A Greater Understanding Of The Climate Crisis, Jessica Gray Apr 2022

Bridging The Gap Between Science And Society To Foster A Greater Understanding Of The Climate Crisis, Jessica Gray

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

Born and raised on the East Coast, I have had the luxury of spending time patrolling the shoreline of the Gulf of Maine for the past two decades. As a member of a coastal Maine community, it was never a question that I wanted to dedicate my career to marine research, working to ensure society sustains the integrity and stability of our global oceans. After acquiring diverse experience within the realm of oceanography, I have continuously centered my work around a single focal point: climate change is beginning to alter ecosystems to a point where resources are becoming severely impacted. …

Barbarians And Heretics: Anti-Byzantine And Anti-Western Sentiments In Crusade-Era Chronicles, 1096–1204, Ryan Saputo

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

In the summer of 2021, I was granted the opportunity to carry out historical research through a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). I chose to research anti-Western and anti-Byzantine stereotypes in Crusade-era primary sources regarding the first three Crusades, to investigate whether these stereotypes played a role in the deterioration of relations between the Crusaders and the Byzantine Empire and in the Fourth Crusade, which resulted in the sack of Constantinople. With the help of my research adviser, Professor David Bachrach, I selected eight Western primary sources and five Byzantine primary sources to read and analyze for evidence of these …
