Climate change is an existential threat to the vast global permafrost domain. The diverse human cultures, ecological communities, and biogeochemical cycles of this tenth of the planet depend on the persistence of frozen conditions. The complexity, immensity, and remoteness of permafrost ecosystems make it difficult to grasp how quickly things are changing and what can be done about it. Here, we summarize terrestrial and marine changes in the permafrost domain with an eye toward global policy. While many questions remain, we know that continued fossil fuel burning is incompatible with the continued existence of the permafrost domain as we know …

Granite Staters Think Nh Elections Are Trustworthy And Easy But Not So Sure About Rest Of U.S. 6/28/2022, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Most 2020 voters in New Hampshire say it was easy to vote and are very confident their vote was counted accurately. Likely 2022 voters are slightly less certain about their vote this November, particularly Republicans. Less than a quarter of Granite Staters think voter fraud is a serious problem in New Hampshire but nearly half, including nine in ten Republicans, think it is a serious problem in the country as a whole.

Two-Thirds In Nh Disapprove Of Biden's Handling Of Economy; Many Eating Out And Driving Less Due To Inflation 6/24/2022, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
A growing majority of Granite Staters disapprove of President Joe Biden's overall job performance and two-thirds, a record high, disapprove of his handling of the economy. Half of New Hampshire residents are driving and eating out less due to high inflation. Republicans blame President Biden and government spending for high inflation, Democrats place more blame on businesses raising prices and the war in Ukraine, and majorities of both parties blame the Federal Reserve.

All UNH Survey Center Polls
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is now statistically tied with Former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire Republican Primary. Support for DeSantis has more than doubled since October. DeSantis runs better against Biden than does Trump, a further sign of Trump’s weakening support among NH Republicans. Biden and Trump are increasingly unpopular in New Hampshire and only about half of members of each of their own parties want them to run for President in 2024. Other potential 2024 presidential candidates such as Vice President Kamala Harris, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz are also broadly unpopular …

Brown carbon (BrC) associated with aerosol particles in western United States wildfires was measured between July and August 2019 aboard the NASA DC-8 research aircraft during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) study. Two BrC measurement methods are investigated, highly spectrally resolved light absorption in solvent (water and methanol) extracts of particles collected on filters and in situ bulk aerosol particle light absorption measured at three wavelengths (405, 532 and 664 nm) with a photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS). A light-absorption closure analysis for wavelengths between 300 and 700 nm was performed. The combined light absorption of particle …

The physical and chemical changes that accompany permafrost thaw directly influence the microbial communities that mediate the decomposition of formerly frozen organic matter, leading to uncertainty in permafrost–climate feedbacks. Although changes to microbial metabolism and community structure are documented following thaw, the generality of post-thaw assembly patterns across permafrost soils of the world remains uncertain, limiting our ability to predict biogeochemistry and microbial community responses to climate change. Based on our review of the Arctic microbiome, permafrost microbiology, and community ecology, we propose that Assembly Theory provides a framework to better understand thaw-mediated microbiome changes and the implications for community …
