Two-Thirds Of Mainers Report Struggling To Afford Necessities, Expect Recession Within Twelve Months 8/30/2023, Unh Survey Center

A majority of Mainers say that they are worse off financially than a year ago and nearly two-thirds say they have struggled to afford basic necessities in the past year. Mainers are generally pessimistic about the state and national economies and nearly two-thirds expect that the country is already in a recession or will be in one within twelve months. Responses differ considerably based on household income, with those with low to middling incomes more pessimistic about the economy and more likely to report hardship in their personal finances.

In the accompanying Comment1, He et al. argue that the determinant role of microbial carbon use efficiency in global soil organic carbon (SOC) storage shown in Tao et al. (2023)2 was overestimated because carbon inputs were neglected in our data analysis while they suggest that our model-based analysis could be biased and model-dependent. Their argument is based on a different choice of independent variables in the data analysis and a sensitivity analysis of two process-based models other than that used in our study. Majority In Nh Feel Summers Are Warmer Than They Used To Be, Human-Caused Climate Change Happening Now 8/29/2023, Unh Survey Center

More than half of New Hampshire residents feel that summers are warmer than two decades ago and two-thirds say they have avoided doing outdoor activities at least one day this summer due to the heat. Seven in eight Granite Staters believe climate change is happening now and the majority believe it is caused primarily by human activity. Young people and Democrats are particularly likely to believe climate change is caused primarily by people and to be worried about its effects.

Scott Receives High Marks For Handling Of July 2023 Floods But Many Say Hometown Not Fully Recovered 8/29/2023, Unh Survey Center

More than one-third of Vermonters were personally affected by the July 2023 flooding in the state, including seven in ten in Central Vermont. Many whose town was affected say it has not fully recovered. Nearly three-quarters of Vermonters approve of Governor Phil Scott's handling of the flooding. Two-thirds of Vermonters believe climate change is happening now and primarily caused by human actions and a similar percentage are concerned about the effects of climate change on the world and their town or city.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu continues to have high approval ratings after his announcement not to run in 2024. Nearly half of state residents say Sununu is above average or one of NH’s best governors. Former Senator Kelly Ayotte is the best-known of several candidates seeking to replace Sununu. The high cost of housing remains the most important problem facing the state.

Most Mainers say that they plan to vote in the November Referendum election in Maine, but few Mainers say they have heard much about the questions on the ballot or understand them particularly well. Mainers say they have heard the most about and best understand Question 3 regarding the Pine Tree Power Company. Governor Janet Mills is still rated positively, but her approval ratings are down since the spring. The most important problems facing Maine are housing and the cost of living.

More than six in ten Maine residents believe that former President Donald Trump will be convicted in at least one of the cases currently being brought against him, up from just over half who expected this in April. However, only one in five expect Trump will spend one or more days in prison. Majorities of state residents feel that Trump committed a crime in each of the four cases for which he has been indicted. A majority of Mainers believe that Hunter Biden has done something illegal and that he is receiving favorable treatment because he is Joe Biden's son.

The Center for Health Analytics presented to attendees at the New Hampshire Comprehensive Health Care Information System (CHIS) 2023 Annual Meeting. This presentation provides an overview of the Institute for Health Policy and Practice and our recent work that utilized NH’s All Payer’s Claims Data, including the COVID-19 claims recovery analysis, the mental health conditions seen in the emergency room study and the NH Claims Report Suite. Attendees included DHHS staff and representatives from insurance companies that submit administrative claims data to NH CHIS.
