Exploring The Associations Between Being Single, Romantic Importance, And Positive Well-Being In Young Adulthood, Nicole K. Watkins, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison Dec 2023

Exploring The Associations Between Being Single, Romantic Importance, And Positive Well-Being In Young Adulthood, Nicole K. Watkins, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison

Faculty Publications

Objective: The goal was to explore if perceived romantic relationship importance moderated associations between single status and young adults' positive well-being.

Background: Singlehood is often framed within a deficit framework, with the expectation that being single during young adulthood may be costly for well-being. That approach, however, does not account for young adults' romantic goals, which may shape how being single is connected to well-being.

Method: Participants were 909 American young adults, ages 18–35 (M = 26.6, 51% female, 81% heterosexual, 58% White, non-Hispanic), who completed an online survey in December 2019.

Results: Being single, compared to having a romantic …

Latest Data Show All New England States Gain Population, Kenneth M. Johnson Dec 2023

Latest Data Show All New England States Gain Population, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, Carsey Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports that population gains were widespread in New England last year, according to new Census Bureau estimates. All six states gained population for the first time since before the pandemic. New Hampshire and Maine continued to gain population, just as they have in each of the last four years. In contrast, Massachusetts and Rhode Island gained population last year after several years of population decline. Vermont and Connecticut also continued to add population.

Most of New England’s population increase came from migration, because deaths continue to exceed births in four of the …

Vermonters Divided On Holiday Greeting; More Likely To Have Real Christmas Tree 12/20/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

A slightly larger proportion of Vermonters will have a real Christmas tree rather than an artificial tree this year, while a quarter won't have any tree. Those who prefer a real tree often cite tradition or a better look or smell, those who prefer an artificial tree mention less work or cost, and those who won't have a tree at all often say it is because they won't be home or because they do not celebrate Christmas. Vermonters are equally divided on their preferred holiday greeting, with Democrats favoring "Happy Holidays" and Republicans and Independents using "Merry Christmas" more often.

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Nearly half of Granite Staters will have an artificial Christmas tree this year, with many citing lower cost and less work as the reason why. Less than a third will have a real tree, citing tradition and the look and smell of a real tree. A majority of New Hampshire residents use "Merry Christmas" as their regular holiday greeting. Most plan on spending about the same or less on holiday gifts this year, particularly those with lower incomes, and Granite Staters plan to do a majority of their shopping online.

How Many Emotional Intelligence Abilities Are There? An Examination Of Four Measures Of Emotional Intelligence, John Mayer, David R. Caruso, Gill Sitarenios, Manolo Romero Escobar Dec 2023

How Many Emotional Intelligence Abilities Are There? An Examination Of Four Measures Of Emotional Intelligence, John Mayer, David R. Caruso, Gill Sitarenios, Manolo Romero Escobar

UNH Personality Lab

The ability model of emotional intelligence (EI) specifies that four related abilities are involved: perceiving emotions, facilitating thought using emotions, understanding emotions, and managing them. Several performance-based assessments have been developed to measure those four abilities. Although some researchers find empirical support for the four abilities, others have argued that emotional intelligence divides into three abilities, two or even a single, unitary ability (Legree et al., 2014; Palmer, Gignac, Manocha, & Stough, 2005). We reanalyzed archival data from four ability tests of emotional intelligence, Ns = 503, 5000, 1000, and 2000, conducting item-level exploratory factor models of all four assessments …

Barriers To Hiring And Retaining Educators In New Hampshire, Melissa N. Fazlic Dec 2023

Barriers To Hiring And Retaining Educators In New Hampshire, Melissa N. Fazlic

M.S. in Leadership

The COVID-19 pandemic brought to light the teacher shortage; however, school districts across the country have faced shortages for many years. While the state of New Hampshire is not alone in the shortage of teachers, New Hampshire faces additional barriers when it comes to recruiting and retaining a diverse group of certified educators. This project explores barriers to hiring educators that include: the demand for teachers, the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching reciprocity challenges, budget constraints and low wages, and local competition. The methodology used includes a combination of research using online tools such as Google Scholar, the UNH virtual library, and …
