Global And Local Magnitude And Spatial Pattern Of Uncertainty From Geographically Adaptive Empirical And Machine Learning Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Models, Kim Lowell, Yuri Rzhanov
Global And Local Magnitude And Spatial Pattern Of Uncertainty From Geographically Adaptive Empirical And Machine Learning Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Models, Kim Lowell, Yuri Rzhanov
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The spatial structure of local uncertainty of shallow-water satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) relative to model type, imagery, and geographical adaptability was examined for an area near Key West, Florida (United States). The model types examined were a commonly used quasi-empirical linear regression model and a decision tree-based Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) machine learning (ML) model. Image types examined were (four) cloud-free Sentinel-2 images and a maximum blue band (Band 2) value image composite of the four Sentinel-2 images. Initial models fitted were based on band reflectances alone. Geographical adaptivity was added by including UTM coordinates and refitting the models. Major findings were: …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A coordinated multi-year ocean exploration campaign on the Blake Plateau offshore of the southeastern U.S. has mapped what appears to be the most expansive cold-water coral (CWC) mound province thus far discovered. Nearly continuous CWC mound features span an area up to 500 km long and 110 km wide, with a core area of high-density mounds up to 254 km long by 42 km wide. This study synthesized bathymetric data from 31 multibeam sonar mapping surveys and generated a standardized geomorphic classification of the region in order to delineate and quantify CWC mound habitats and compare mound morphologies among subregions …

"Hyperlocal" Career Pathway Programs In New Hampshire: Collaborating To Support Youth At The Secondary/Postsecondary Transition, Jayson Seaman
"Hyperlocal" Career Pathway Programs In New Hampshire: Collaborating To Support Youth At The Secondary/Postsecondary Transition, Jayson Seaman
Carsey Publications
College costs and persistent workforce shortages have prompted educators, policymakers, and employers to shift the conversation on the transition from high school from a narrow “college for all” emphasis to a broader “postsecondary education” and “career pathways” perspective. The timing of this shift coincides with current and anticipated workforce needs; by 2032, New Hampshire will have 197,000 positions available across its top 80 occupations, with labor force growth projected to fill only 6,100 of those jobs.
Some commentators argue that broadening options to include career and technical education, certificates, and 2-year degrees is essential for realizing equity gains. Successfully building …

Trump & Biden Lead Comfortably In Vermont Primary Races; Majority Agree With Ballot Exclusion Of Trump In Me 1/9/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
More than half of likely Republican primary voters in Vermont support former President Donald Trump and most of his supporters say that they have definitely decided to vote for him. Trump is followed distantly by former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. On the Democratic side, which most likely primary voters plan to participate in, three-quarters support President Joe Biden while Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips and author Marianne Williamson garner very little support. Six in ten Vermonters agree with the decision to disqualify Trump from the primary ballot in Maine.

Haley Within Striking Distance Of Trump In New Hampshire 1/9/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Former President Donald Trump continues to lead the 2024 New Hampshire Republican Primary but former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has reduced Trump's lead to single digits. Haley would likely move even closer to Trump if former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie were to withdraw, as two-thirds of Christie's supporters select Haley as their second choice. Undeclared voters who plan to vote in the Republican primary favor Haley over Trump by more than two to one, while Trump holds a large lead among registered Republicans. On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden continues to hold a commanding lead despite not being …

Mainers Divided On Trump Ballot Exclusion; Biden Approval Falls Sharply 1/9/2024, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Maine residents are divided over Secretary of State Bellows' ruling excluding former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot in Maine. A majority feel that partisan politics played at least some role in the decision. A majority of Mainers also believe Trump bears a good deal of responsibility for the events of January 6th, 2021 in Washington D.C. Six in ten Mainers disapprove of President Biden's job performance, a sharp decline since October.

Degradation Increases Peat Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Undrained Tropical Peat Swamp Forests, Erin Swails, Steve Frolking, Jia Deng, Kristell Hergoualc'h
Degradation Increases Peat Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Undrained Tropical Peat Swamp Forests, Erin Swails, Steve Frolking, Jia Deng, Kristell Hergoualc'h
Faculty Publications
Tropical peat swamp degradation can modify net peat greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions even without drainage. However, current Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines do not provide default emission factors (EF) for anthropogenically-degraded undrained organic soils. We reviewed published field measurements of peat GHG fluxes in undrained undegraded and degraded peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia (SEA) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Degradation without drainage shifted the peat from a net CO2 sink to a source in both SEA (− 2.9 ± 1.8 to 4.1 ± 2.0 Mg CO2–C ha−1 yr−1) and LAC (− 4.3 ± 1.8 to …
