Pessimism About Future Personal Finances Ebbing In Nh But Majority Expect A Recession Within A Year 8/27/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

New Hampshire residents remain downbeat about their personal finances and nearly half of state residents report at least some difficulty affording basic necessities within the last year. However, Granite Staters are less pessimistic about their economic future. Compared to May, fewer people expect to be worse off financially next year or expect bad times for the state or national economies. Despite this, six in ten think the country is in a recession or is likely to enter one within the next year.

Utilisation Of The Site Assessment Energy Indices For Aquaculture In Exposed Waters: Biology, Technology, Operations And Maintenance, Kevin G. Heasman, Tyler Sclodnick, Nils Goseberg, Nicholas Scott, Michael Chambers, Tobias Dewhurst, Samuel Rickerich, Heidi Moe Føre, Bela H. Buck

When moving from a very sheltered aquaculture site to a very exposed oceanic aquaculture site, the energy increases proportionally in a continuum. Lojek et al. (in review) considered the primary influential parameters (water current, wave height, wave period, wavelength and water depth) which influence the species, structure, technology, methods, and operational aspects of any aquaculture endeavour and investigated six possible indices which cover these variables. Added to advanced computer modelling, assisted by detailed and constant environmental monitoring, it may be possible to refine site selection, structure selection and design, species selection, equipment and logistic requirements and health and safety requirements. …

We present X-ray polarimetry observations from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) of three low spectral peak and one intermediate spectral peak blazars, namely 3C 273, 3C 279, 3C 454.3, and S5 0716+714. For none of these objects was IXPE able to detect X-ray polarization at the 3σ level. However, we placed upper limits on the polarization degree at ∼10%–30%. The undetected polarizations favor models where the X-ray band is dominated by unpolarized photons upscattered by relativistic electrons in the jets of blazars, although hadronic models are not completely eliminated. We discuss the X-ray polarization upper limits in the context …

Circularly polarized, nearly parallel propagating waves are prevalent in the solar wind at ion-kinetic scales. At these scales, the spectrum of turbulent fluctuations in the solar wind steepens, often called the transition range, before flattening at sub-ion scales. Circularly polarized waves have been proposed as a mechanism to couple electromagnetic fluctuations to ion gyromotion, enabling ion-scale dissipation that results in observed ion-scale steepening. Here we study Parker Solar Probe observations of an extended stream of fast solar wind ranging from ∼15 to 55 R ⊙. We demonstrate that, throughout the stream, transition range steepening at ion scales is associated with …

Nh Residents Remain Positive On Sununu's Performance As Governor 8/23/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

A majority approve of retiring incumbent Governor Chris Sununu's job performance. Four in ten residents, and more than two-thirds of Republicans, believe he has been above average or one of New Hampshire's best governors. Sununu's handling of COVID-19 and taxes are most often cited by his supporters as positive decisions while his handling of abortion and support for former President Donald Trump are most often mentioned as poor decisions by Sununu's detractors.

King Leads Maine Senate Race; Residents Divided On Popular Vote Compact 8/22/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Senator Angus King leads in his re-election bid in Maine. Mainers are evenly divided on the state joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and prefer the current "congressional district" system to apportion presidential delegates rather than a "winner-take-all" system. Just over half of Mainers approve of Governor Mills' job performance and nearly half think the state is headed in the right direction.

Multiscale Characterization Of Dislocation Development During Cyclic Bending Under Tension In Commercially Pure Titanium, Nathan Miller, Nicholas Pitkin, Talukder Musfika Tasnim Oishi, Desmond Mensah, Marko Knezevic, Michael Miles, David Fullwood

Faculty Publications

Continuous bending under tension (CBT) has been shown to increase room temperature elongation-to-failure in various sheet metals beyond that of simple tension. A greater understanding of deformation mechanisms in CBT would allow for its elongation-enhancing effects to be more fully exploited, creating potential for new forming strategies. CBT-induced cyclic bending/unbending stresses combined with applied macroscopic tensile stresses create complex through-thickness stress profiles, where differing hardening behavior is expected near the surfaces compared with the middle of the sheet. This work uses high resolution electron backscatter diffraction characterization of geometrically necessary dislocation density together with X-ray diffraction-based evaluations of total dislocation …

Harris Holds Wide Lead Over Trump In Vermont, Many Worried About Peaceful Transfer Of Power 8/21/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Vice President Kamala Harris holds a massive lead over former President Donald Trump in the presidential race in Vermont, fueled by an extraordinary lead among women and those with college degrees. Harris is far more personally popular than Trump and is rated considerably better on several personal attributes, particularly temperament, honesty, and integrity. About four in ten Vermonters are not confident that there will be a peaceful transfer of power following the November election. The Democratic vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, is quite popular in Vermont and most Harris supporters are enthusiastic about his selection. President Joe Biden's …

Instructional Technology Tetrahedron And Network Visualization: Conceptualizing Online Teaching Through A Lens Of Reflective Noticing, Jinqing Liu, Orly Buchbinder

Faculty Publications

Online learning and teaching, accelerated by the global pandemic and rapid advancement of digital technology, require novel conceptual and analytical tools to understand better the evolving nature of online teaching. Drawing on the classical model of the instructional triangle and previous attempts to extend it, we propose the Instructional Technology Tetrahedron (ITT)—a conceptual framework that integrates technology into the instructional triangle to represent the role of technology, as a learning tool and a mediator between teachers, students, and content. Combining the ITT framework with network visualization strategies allowed for representing the intensity of interactions within the tetrahedron. We illustrate the …

Accuracy Of Bathymetric Depth Change Maps Using Multi-Temporal Images And Machine Learning, Kim Lowell, Joan Hermann

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Most work to date on satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) depth change estimates water depth at individual times t1 and t2 using two separate models and then differences the model estimates. An alternative approach is explored in this study: a multi-temporal Sentinel-2 image is created by “stacking” the bands of the times t1 and t2 images, geographically coincident reference data for times t1 and t2 allow for “true” depth change to be calculated for the pixels of the multi-temporal image, and this information is used to fit a single model that estimates depth change directly rather than indirectly as in the model-differencing …
