A National Assessment Of State Level Culvert Management Plans, Steven Michael Carvalho Jr

In this paper, infrastructure asset management was explored, particularly culvert management, with the main objective being the investigation of culvert management plans nationally in the United States of America. These documents were collected, categorized for context, and evaluated for the addressing of increasingly important concepts for modern times. These research parameters, prioritization strategy, social equity, and climate change, were then compared to two other considerations to create more inferences and potential conclusions: geographical region and political ideology. A statistical analysis was then conducted spearheaded by Spearman’s correlation, a test that measured the strength of a potential correlation between two variables. …

Investigating The Lyoprotective Properties Of An Antifreeze Protein From A Broadleaf Desert Shrub, Alexzandria Sheppard

Lyophilization, or freeze-drying, is an important preservation method for protein-based products, such as protein pharmaceuticals. However, the process introduces both freezing and drying stresses that can harm proteins. Here, we have studied the efficacy of AnAFP, a dehydrin-like antifreeze protein isolated from the broadleaf desert shrub Ammopiptanthus nanus, in reducing enzyme damage during freeze-drying, or lyophilization. We have shown that AnAFP can protect the model enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from both freezing and dehydration damages during lyophilization with similar or better efficacy than 10% w/v sucrose and superior to that of another known antifreeze protein.

With increasing concern regarding global warming contributions by fossil fuels in petrochemical production, the potential use of biomass-derived molecules to serve as a more eco-friendly feedstock has grown in popularity. Specifically, sebacic acid, a versatile chemical used to produce nylons, plasticizers, and lubricants, has the potential to be obtained from bio-renewable feedstocks and alleviate environmental drawbacks from fossil fuel petrochemical production. Our research validates the catalytic conversion of the biomass-derived 2,2’-bifuran 5,5’-dicarboxylate (BFDCM) to sebacic acid (SA), through M-MOx catalyzed hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) workers and firefighters are a demographic at greater risk for cardiovascular disease than the general American public. An atherogenic dietary pattern with limited physical exercise due to occupational stresses and time constraints could lead to increased risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and heart events. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) workers and firefighters may face barriers to preparing meals due to unpredictability and inconsistency of call volume; one day may be quiet with only a few calls, while another may consist of many back-to-back ones. Project TACKLE was a joint collaborative project between the CIA and the Taiwanese government to facilitate U-2 spy plane missions flown by Taiwanese pilots over China. These missions, conducted from 1962 to 1974, provide critical insights regarding the US and Taiwan’s fluctuating relationship during this period. TACKLE missions played a crucial role in informing policymakers on a variety of subjects, such as the progress of China’s rapidly evolving nuclear weapons program. This paper situates the TACKLE missions within the broader political context of their time to highlight the constant prioritization challenge that plagued the program.

Investigating The Mechanisms Of Freeze Tolerance In Lemna Minor, Tamara Bouchard

Freezing presents a significant abiotic stress to aquatic plants, yet little is known about the mechanisms by which species like Lemna minor (duckweed) survive subzero temperatures in nature. This study investigates whether L. minor employs freeze-avoidance or freeze-tolerance strategies and explores the potential role of its microbiome in enhancing cold resilience. Using both field-collected fronds from naturally frozen ponds and controlled freezing experiments in the lab, I assessed survival through viability staining and post-thaw survival. Results showed that L. minor can survive natural ice encasement and that prior cold acclimation significantly improves tissue survival under induced freezing. Trypan blue staining …

The US education system has seen a recent push for more secondary school curriculum to include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) materials and activities. Middle and high school is a pivotal time when academic and personal experiences affect the development of student attitudes towards STEM (Christensen et al., 2015; Moreno et al., 2016). Teachers often utilize hands-on activities to promote student engagement with science curriculum (Brooks & Poles, 2021; Christensen et al., 2015). The goal of this study was to determine whether TreeMap 2016, a forest model created by Riley et al. (2022a), is appropriate for fine-scale forestry applications in the northeastern United States.The integration of remotely sensed data and forest inventories to create multi-source forest inventories has become standard practice in many countries around the world. Wall-to-wall models of terrestrial biomass are of particular interest in light of the role of forests in carbon sequestration. TreeMap 2016 makes tree-level predictions of forest conditions across the U.S. at a 30x30-meter pixel resolution using USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis data. TreeMap has been used …
