The vulnerability of soil carbon pools to changing environmental conditions is a key factor regulating ecosystem carbon balance. At the northeastern US Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, soil-atmosphere carbon fluxes have changed dramatically over the past 20 years: summer soil respiration flux has doubled since 2015, and heterotrophic microbial mineralization has increased similarly, coinciding with a decrease in carbon content in organic soil horizons. In this seminar, I will explore these changes in the context of temporal and spatial variation in soil carbon pool vulnerability across the landscape. In a very early snapshot of the 2028 presidential primary contests in New Hampshire, Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lead among likely Democratic primary voters, while JD Vance enjoys a considerable lead over prospective rivals for the 2028 Republican nomination. A bipartisan majority in New Hampshire support a state law requiring the state's presidential primary to be held before any similar contest. Looking far out ahead to the 2028 presidential primaries in Vermont, Vice President JD Vance is the early leader on the Republican side, while Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Gavin Newsom, and Pete Buttigieg head up the Democratic. Approval of President Trump's job performance is unchanged among Vermonters. In an early look at the 2028 presidential primary season, Gavin Newsom, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and Pete Buttigieg are the early leaders among likely Democratic voters in Maine. On the other side, JD Vance holds a wide early lead over his potential rivals for the Republican nomination. Approval of President Trump's handling of foreign affairs has increased since August. More than half of Vermont residents want Governor Phil Scott to run again and a plurality say that he is deserving of re-election. Despite most Democrats in the state saying that Scott is to their political right, a majority approve of his handling of his job as governor. Transitioning to a more circular economy where materials are recycled to reduce pollution and create further value is central to human prosperity and environmental responsibility. However, this transition presents several challenges that require innovative solutions. In this seminar, Dr. Roy will first provide an overview of work underway in the new Casella Center for Circular Economy & Sustainability at the University of Vermont. Then he will focus on nutrient recycling, a key objective for more circular economies, in more detail.
