Institutional Influences And The Governance And Administration Of The Programa Produtor De Água Payment For Ecosystem Services Program In Brazil, Thomas G. Safford

Payment-for-Ecosystem-Services (PES) has been promoted as an innovative approach to environmental governance capable of simultaneously advancing conservation and sustainable development objectives. While studies commonly assess the ecological and economic performance of PES schemes, less attention has been given to their organizational and administrative effectiveness. This study examines these governance dimensions of one of Latin America’s most prominent PES initiatives—the Water Producer Program (WPP) in Brazil. Drawing on a meta-synthesis of 125 publications, the analysis investigates how regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive institutional forces shaped WPP implementation. A majority of Maine residents think artificial intelligence (AI) will have a negative effect on the country over the next ten years, and many are pessimistic about the effect of AI on news, elections, the environment, and personal relationships. A majority of working Mainers report using AI at their job, particularly those with a college degree or more education, and a majority say it has made them more productive. Nearly two-thirds of New Hampshire residents believe artificial intelligence will have a negative effect on the country over the next ten years, particularly young people. New Hampshire residents are very pessimistic about the effect of AI on jobs, elections, the cost of utilities, personal relationships, the environment, and the news. Forests, Lakes, And "Hidden" Housing, Kenneth M. Johnson, Mark J. Ducey, Barbara D. Cook, Kathryn L. Cottingham

Human settlement patterns have significant implications for the natural environment, including freshwater lakes. People are attracted to areas with abundant lakes. However, dense human settlement near lakes can have adverse impacts on lakes by reducing forest cover, increasing nutrient loads, decreasing aquatic vegetation, and introducing invasive species. In addition, dense human settlement near lakes increases the health risks associated with cyanobacteria (also known as “blue-green algae”) blooms.

In this brief, a multi-disciplinary team of researchers focuses on the interaction between human development and forest land near lakes across ten selected U.S. counties and on the limitations of remote satellite imagery …
