The Role Of Leadership In A Law Enforcement Organization’S Morale, Brian Fleming Jan 2020

The Role Of Leadership In A Law Enforcement Organization’S Morale, Brian Fleming

M.S. in Leadership

This research project digs into the idea of what leadership styles are like in law enforcement and military organizations, and what can be done to improve morale. At the same time it looks at the connection between leadership style and communication, and the connection between those to morale. Academic literature has shown employee job satisfaction and morale is connected to leadership styles, and that the more communication there is from leadership, the more connected employees feel to their organization. Employees believe that the more involved a leader is in a policing organization, the more likely they are to trust in …

Quantifying Reasonable Doubt, Daniel Pi, Francesco Parisi, Barbara Luppi Jan 2020

Quantifying Reasonable Doubt, Daniel Pi, Francesco Parisi, Barbara Luppi

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article contributes in three ways to the prior literature on the reasonable doubt standard. First, it synthesizes the insular strands of historical, economic, jurisprudential, and doctrinal scholarship on reasonable doubt. Second, it advances a conception of the criminal standard of proof designed to avoid the various problems affecting earlier attempts to devise meaningful definitions of reasonable doubt. The definition proposed is that “reasonable doubt” be the standard of proof which minimizes the aggregate subjective expected social cost of false conviction and false acquittal. Judicial pronouncements of Blackstonian ratios (for example, that it is better that ten guilty go free …

Boundaries, Work-Life Balance, And Expectations: Perceptions From Development Professionals, Rebecca Geragosian Jan 2020

Boundaries, Work-Life Balance, And Expectations: Perceptions From Development Professionals, Rebecca Geragosian

M.S. in Leadership

What we expect in terms of a separation between work and life changes as cultural norms and values evolve. This study examined the current perceptions of professionals in the field of development and fundraising regarding work-life balance, boundaries, and organizational norms and expectations regarding physical and psychological work outside of typical hours. Using an original research survey of 90 fundraising professionals, this study expands the existing literature on work-life balance and expectations at work by representing the perceptions of a new population, and by illustrating employees' perspectives rather than the organizational or human resources perspective. What emerges from the data …

Follower-Centric: An Approach To Leadership, Abigail Flores Jan 2020

Follower-Centric: An Approach To Leadership, Abigail Flores

M.S. in Leadership

Followership is the silent partner to leadership. Leadership tends to eclipse followership but, as organizations flatten, research on followership, in a professional setting, is expanding and serving as a framework for reflection upon leadership practices and effectiveness. This project examines followership as a contributor to leadership, brings awareness to the significance of the leader-follower relationship, and identifies opportunities to improve leader and follower effectiveness. The study includes a definition and deconstruction of followership, a discussion of the evolutionary basis of the leader-follower relationship, the connotations and stigma associated with followers and leaders, and a review of the literature on followership. …

Vulnerability In Higher Education Leadership, Melissa Plante Jan 2020

Vulnerability In Higher Education Leadership, Melissa Plante

M.S. in Leadership

Since 2010, vulnerability has been a topic more popularized by Dr. Brené Brown. Her TED Talk, The Power of Vulnerability, followed by several books of hers have offered a different perspective on personal vulnerability and how we lead in various arenas. Through researching Brown’s extensive work on vulnerability and courage along with other literature, this research project will review vulnerability and how it relates to individual leadership styles, trust, and gender. A survey of 80+ higher education professionals will explore their perception of vulnerability, the relationship between their reported vulnerability levels and leadership style (authentic, ethical, or transformational).

Fat In The Academy: Reimagining The Experience Of The Fat Academic, Danielle Marie Lavendier Jan 2020

Fat In The Academy: Reimagining The Experience Of The Fat Academic, Danielle Marie Lavendier

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation gives teachers with stigmatized bodies space to enter into a conversation that is often had without them by media and medical providers. Fat bodies are maligned in contemporary American society and, for a number of reasons, including American ideas about independence and self-control, European-based standards of beauty, media representation, and more, fat people (especially women) are seen as pathological, out-of-control and as draining to the greater society. Within academia, there are pressures for fat folks, as well. This qualitative interview-based study focuses on self-identified fat, female professors and graduate students in Composition and Rhetoric. These women are high …

Creating Buy-In From Nurse Leaders To Implement Inpatient Education And Screening For Human Trafficking: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Andrea Macdonald Jan 2020

Creating Buy-In From Nurse Leaders To Implement Inpatient Education And Screening For Human Trafficking: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Andrea Macdonald

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Human trafficking is an under-recognized healthcare issue affecting an

estimated 20 to 40 million individuals globally. Professional nursing organizations, healthcare

regulatory bodies and legislators have declared the need for education and screening practices. A

quality improvement initiative designed to create buy-in from nurse leaders to create and

implement education, screening and a protocol to guide care of human trafficking victims who

may present to inpatient and clinic settings at the organization was developed to bridge gaps in

knowledge and inform evidence-based practice.

METHODS: Literature review informed the development of an education intervention presented

to nurse leaders using multi-modal learning …

Integrating Yoga Into A Medication Assisted Treatment Program To Improve Retention, Linda Davidson Jan 2020

Integrating Yoga Into A Medication Assisted Treatment Program To Improve Retention, Linda Davidson

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: In 2017, Health and Human Services declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency (US Department of Health & Human Services, 2017). As a response, access to medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs was encouraged. In 2016, a community health center in Western North Carolina started a MAT program integrating buprenorphine treatment with behavioral health (BH) services. Data from May 2018 through May 2019 demonstrated retention in the MAT program ranged from 65-75% at a given time with behavioral health attendance under 50%.

Aims: The aim of this quality improvement project was to examine if integrating yoga, an …

Promoting A Culture Of Civility Among Oncology Nurses In The Ambulatory Care Setting To Improve Patient Safety And Nurse Retention, Sheila Evans Jan 2020

Promoting A Culture Of Civility Among Oncology Nurses In The Ambulatory Care Setting To Improve Patient Safety And Nurse Retention, Sheila Evans

DNP Scholarly Projects

INTRODUCTION: Nurse incivility is a well-documented phenomenon discussed in the literature and woven into the nursing lexicon. Nurse incivility results in negative consequences for nurses, patients and organizations. Adding to its complexity is the fact that nurses may be unable to identify and address covert uncivil behaviors and lack an effective tactic to mitigate situations.

AVAILABLE KNOWLEDGE: The nursing literature describes the existence of nurse-to-nurse incivility and its correlation with negative outcomes. Regulatory bodies such as The Joint Commission (TJC) also recognize the adverse outcomes resulting from civility and issued two alerts addressing workplace behavior. Additionally, the American Nurses Association …

Improving Transitions In Care: Focus On The Revocation Of Conditional Discharge Process In New Hampshire, Stacy A. Sorrell Jan 2020

Improving Transitions In Care: Focus On The Revocation Of Conditional Discharge Process In New Hampshire, Stacy A. Sorrell

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: At this time there is no standardized education for providers of New Hampshire Hospital addressing the Revocation of Conditional Discharge Process. Psychiatric patients in New Hampshire most at risk for harm to self or others are managed through Involuntary Commitment Orders. These orders are intended to support those most at risk of destabilization and treatment non-compliance. The Revocation of Conditional Discharge Process is one of the procedures used to re-hospitalize a patient whose care is managed through an Involuntary Commitment Order when needed. The psychiatric providers at New Hampshire Hospital must complete this last step in the revocation process, …

Timely Follow Up Care After Initiation Of Adhd Medication In Children: A Quality Improvement Project, Rebecca Haas Jan 2020

Timely Follow Up Care After Initiation Of Adhd Medication In Children: A Quality Improvement Project, Rebecca Haas

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: Enhancing medication safety, strengthening compliance and mitigating side effects requires close monitoring. A child, defined by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as being between the ages of 6 years and 12 years of ages, with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) must have an initial medication visit within 30 days of a first-time trial of ADHD medication. Increasing staff awareness of organizational policy of expected timeframe for medication checks and annotating appointment slots as initial medication checks will decrease the number of days between the first-time trial of ADHD medication and a child’s medication assessment. Methods: The Model for …

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Depressive Symptomology And The Influence Of Psychosocial Stress: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos, Caitlin Porter Jan 2020

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Depressive Symptomology And The Influence Of Psychosocial Stress: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos, Caitlin Porter

Master's Theses and Capstones

Objectives: The literature on omega-3 fatty acid (FA) intake and depressive symptoms is inconsistent, potentially due in part to the influence of psychosocial stress. Some evidence supports that omega-3 FA intake may have greater benefit on depressive symptoms among individuals with high oxidative stress. We quantified the associations between dietary and plasma omega-3 FA and 6-y depressive symptoms and measured the modifying effect of psychosocial stress.

Methods: Data are from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (age 48 y, 63% female). At baseline (2008-11), EPA, DHA and omega-3 very-long-chain FAs (VLCFAs) were estimated using two 24-hr recalls and the …

Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg Jan 2020

Family Preservation And Fatalities: The Effect Of Policy On Child Maltreatment Deaths, Madison N. Sundberg

Master's Theses and Capstones

National estimates suggest that between 1,600 and 1,800 children are victims of CMFs each year (USDHHS, 2020), though it is believed that this number is an underestimation of the true figure (Douglas and Finkelhor, 2005; Yampolskaya, Greenbaum, and Berson, 2009). Two belief systems in protecting children have arisen over the past decades, influenced both by sensational cases of child abuse and research. One side argues that every effort must be made to keep the family intact: the family preservation approach. Alternatively, some argue that by attempting to preserve the family structure and failing to remove victims expeditiously, we leave children …

The Effect Of Gender On Ethical Investing, Delaney J. Housley Jan 2020

The Effect Of Gender On Ethical Investing, Delaney J. Housley

Honors Theses and Capstones

Prior literature related to gender and risk propensity would suggest that females are risk-averse, compassionate, and value ethics over return. This ideology of traditional gender norms stereotypically implies that females may be more likely to engage in ethical investing, as there is inherently less risk in investing in companies with strong corporate social responsibility. On the other hand, males are often portrayed as risk-seeking, competitively motivated, and valuing profits over principle, thus may be more willing to compromise ethics if the ends justify the means. The following paper seeks to investigate this relationship between gender and ethical investing, as examined …

The Role Of Socio-Economic Status On The Language Output Of 3-6 Year Old's During A Naturalistic Museum Study, Serena K. Mueller Jan 2020

The Role Of Socio-Economic Status On The Language Output Of 3-6 Year Old's During A Naturalistic Museum Study, Serena K. Mueller

Honors Theses and Capstones

Over the past 50 years, the lexical nature of young children’s multi-word utterances has been disputed. We ask how socioeconomic status (SES) impacts content and function word usage, and how function word use impacts MLU. Findings show that SES positively correlates with content word production and MLU, which contributes to our knowledge on how SES shapes language and highlights the need for its consideration across settings.
