A Foundation In Behavioral Health For Snhu’S Center For New Americans, Erica Abubaker
M.S. in Health Care Management
This project will create a partnership between two programs, SNHU Center for New Americans and Amoskeag Community Health to create a behavioral health program for refugee children in the Manchester, NH area. This population has faced traumatic events that have caused barriers to learning English, acclimating to life in the US, and other mental health issues. Research shows that a behavioral health program helps these children acclimate better to resettlement in the US. The project was based on a needs assessment conducted as part of a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model for improvement. The partnership will bring about a behavioral health program …

How Policies Portray Students: A Discourse Analysis Of Codes Of Conduct In Academic Libraries, Megan Bresnahan
How Policies Portray Students: A Discourse Analysis Of Codes Of Conduct In Academic Libraries, Megan Bresnahan
Faculty Publications
In academic libraries, “codes of conduct” are policies that define what people who use those libraries are allowed to do in library spaces and serve as rules for enforcement. In this policy discourse analysis, the author examines these policies to understand what dominant discourses emerge about students who use libraries. The discourses represented in these policies portray students through frames of deficit thinking, adultism, exclusion, and surveillance. The study advocates for a critical shift in the design and purpose of these policies, and the results may inspire academic librarians to revise their policies to center care and respect for students.
Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti
Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti
Doctoral Dissertations
In laboratory courses across universities, undergraduate students are learning to act, think, and write like professional scientists. Yet, despite the centrality of language and literacy in laboratory experiments, the process of becoming scientifically literate remains ambiguous. Thus, my dissertation examines how university laboratory courses foster undergraduate students’ emergence as literate professionals and competent communicators in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. In particular, it examines undergraduate students’ literate practices, how they change over time, and how they are affected by material and experimental processes in three sequenced, chemistry laboratory courses. Through laboratory observations and interviews with undergraduate students, faculty, …
Implementing Socially Just Climate Adaptation: A Case Study Of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeffrey Thomas Malloy
Implementing Socially Just Climate Adaptation: A Case Study Of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeffrey Thomas Malloy
Doctoral Dissertations
The urgency to adapt to climate change presents important questions about who stands to benefit from these efforts. The previous two decades of scholarship devoted to social justice in climate adaptation has established an important theoretical basis to evaluate these questions. Less understood however, is how and under what conditions climate adaptation policy implementation promotes or inhibits justice for socially vulnerable populations. This work draws upon the disciplines of urban climate change governance, climate adaptation, urban planning, social justice theory, and policy implementation, to evaluate ongoing climate adaptation policy initiatives in Boston, Massachusetts. Through a case study approach, this dissertation …

Biologically Inspired Computer Vision/ Applications Of Computational Models Of Primate Visual Systems In Computer Vision And Image Processing, Reza Hojjaty Saeedy
Doctoral Dissertations
Biologically Inspired Computer VisionApplications of Computational Models of Primate Visual Systems in Computer Vision and Image Processing Reza Hojjaty Saeedy Abstract Biological vision systems are remarkable at extracting and analyzing the information that is essential for vital functional needs. They perform all these tasks with both high sensitivity and strong reliability. They can efficiently and quickly solve most of the difficult computa- tional problems that are still challenging for artificial systems, such as scene segmentation, 3D/depth perception, motion recognition, etc. So it is no surprise that biological vision systems have been a source of inspiration for computer vision problems. In …
Preventing Violence Among Adolescents: The Many Roles Of School Personnel, Andrew Rizzo
Preventing Violence Among Adolescents: The Many Roles Of School Personnel, Andrew Rizzo
Doctoral Dissertations
Youth violence can encompass a range of types of harmful behaviors that each have their own definitions, high prevalence rates, and litany of negative consequences for both adolescent victims and perpetrators. It includes behaviors that can be labeled based on the nature of the act itself such as physical assault, verbal harassment, relational violence, sexual violence, or cyber violence (Basile et al., 2020; Hasbrouck, 2020). One of the primary avenues of youth violence prevention is through school-based programs that often involve school personnel (Butchart et al., 2019). This dissertation contributes to the extant knowledge about school personnel’s impact on preventing …
Large Scale Organizational Intervention To Improve Emergency Department Throughput In A Community Hospital, Karen Elliott
Large Scale Organizational Intervention To Improve Emergency Department Throughput In A Community Hospital, Karen Elliott
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Emergency Department boarding is a well-documented systemic problem across the country. ED-2b, the time from decision to admit a patient to Emergency Department departure, is specified by the Joint Commission as a quality measure for Emergency Department boarding. ED-2b metrics have been a longstanding challenge at this community hospital outside the nation’s capital. The aim of this study was to reduce median ED-2b times by 10% compared to fiscal year 2020 (FY20). To accomplish the reduction in time, a multidisciplinary throughput committee was developed with subsequent action plans designed to improve Emergency Department throughput.
METHODS: The Plan Do …
Impact Of A Comprehensive Clinician Educational Program On Health Literacy And Patient Satisfaction, Jennifer Yokopenic
Impact Of A Comprehensive Clinician Educational Program On Health Literacy And Patient Satisfaction, Jennifer Yokopenic
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: The Institute of Medicine has defined health literacy as “the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions”. Health literacy is a significant social determinant of overall health and can be particularly challenging in the critical care environment. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, only 12% of adults have proficient health literacy, 53% have intermediate health literacy, 21% have basic health literacy ability, and 14% have below basic health literacy (AHQR.gov, 2008).
METHODS: A pre- and post-intervention survey of satisfaction with clinician communication and assessment of …
Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui
Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui
DNP Scholarly Projects
Readmission rates in hospitals across the country are at an all-time high. Patients being
discharged from the hospital may feel fearful, especially if they are experiencing a new onset of
illness. Many patients wonder how they will deal with or manage their illness once they return
home. The goal for hospitals should be to reduce readmissions by addressing the factors that
impact readmission. Improved care coordination is one of the goals of transitional care. Patients'
functioning and quality of life increase when hospital readmissions are reduced. Readmissions
can be reduced by addressing care management before and after discharge in all …

Improving Employee Mental Health: Addressing Depression At The Workplace, Gerald G. Chia Dr.
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract Background: Depression is a serious mental health challenge in the US. As frontline workers who are responsible for taking care of a myriad of patients daily, health workers are usually exposed to depressive situations which eventually results in them developing the mental health condition. The purpose of the current project was, therefore, to develop an intervention which helps to improve employee mental health in healthcare settings with focus on depression and examine workplace factors which influence depression among employees of the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic in Washington District of Columbia. Methods: A pre-intervention survey was conducted among 43 employees. …

Abstract
Background: Medical Mistrust (MM) is associated with patient dissatisfaction, treatment nonadherence, and poor health outcomes. In the United States, MM is prevalent in African American patients in In-Patient Psychiatric settings. Caregiver training and education on MM and cultural sensitivity can help identify mistrust and provide strategies to increase trust and reduce mistrust.
Purpose: The aim of this project was to implement an educational tool to improve caregiver awareness about knowledge of MM. By doing so, it was the goal to enhance cultural sensitivity skills and patient-centeredness in the African American population at the adult psychiatric unit in Northwest …
The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese
The Effect Of Deep-Water Multibeam Mapping Activity On The Foraging Behavior Of Cuvier’S Beaked Whales And The Marine Acoustic Environment, Hilary Suzanne Curran Kates Varghese
Doctoral Dissertations
Sound can propagate great distances underwater and is an important mode for marine life to obtain information. Human activities in the ocean such as global shipping, coastal construction, gas and oil exploration, and mapping navigation routes intentionally and unintentionally emit sound into the ocean, potentially interacting with marine life. Therefore, it is essential that the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life and the ambient marine acoustic environment be understood. Most of the work, to date, has focused on the impact of low-frequency (<1 kHz) sources such as shipping noise, which is ubiquitous in the ocean, and mid-frequency (1-10 kHz) sources such as naval sonar, to which many marine mammals have shown to be sensitive. The effect of these sources can be as salient as a mass stranding event or as benign as an animal swimming away from a source of noise with no other effect. Less work has focused on higher frequency sources (>10 kHz), including ocean-mapping sonar systems. However, most marine mammals, namely toothed whales (odontocetes), are capable …1>
Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker
Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Over the last thirty years, the student population of schools in the United States have become increasingly more racially diverse, while teachers have remained predominantly white. During this same period, school disciplinary policies and practices have become increasingly punitive. Literature has shown that this shift disproportionately targets students of color. Behavior such as defiance and disruption are now offenses that warrant the suspension or expulsion of a student. These behaviors are subjective in nature. In using their discretion to identify defiance and disruption, teachers may administer discipline in a racially unequal manner. While prior research has documented the emergence of …

Follow The Scientists? How Beliefs About The Practice Of Science Shaped Covid-19 Views, Thomas G. Safford, Emily H. Whitmore, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Faculty Publications
“Follow the science” became the mantra for responding to COVID-19 pandemic. However, for the public this also meant “follow the scientists,” and this led to uneasiness as some viewed scientists as not credible. We investigate how beliefs about the way scientists develop their findings affect pandemic-related views. Our analysis shows that beliefs about scientists’ objectivity predict views regrading coronavirus-related risks, behavioral changes, and policy priorities. While political party identity also predicts views about COVID-19-related concerns, these vary by political leaders whose approaches embraced versus dismissed science based strategies, highlighting the importance of perceptions of scientists in shaping pandemic related attitudes …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Rape Myth Acceptance: College Date Rape Attitudes, Bystander Attitudes, Readiness To Change, Bystander Efficacy And Decisional Balance, Denisa Adanma Okolie
Master's Theses and Capstones
Over four decades, researchers have continued to find that sexual violence is highly predicted by rape myth acceptance and that those individuals who have higher rape myth acceptance are more likely to become perpetrators of sexual assault and rape. While researchers found that gender, athletic participation, Greek affiliation, and attitudes towards women were valid predictors of rape myth acceptance scores, the evidence was mixed for other factors such as race, age, and religiosity. However, few researchers examined the effects of readiness to change and bystander efficacy on rape myth acceptance. This study used data from a larger study to examine …
