Scaling Of Thermal Conductivity In The Eliot Formation, Ryan Todd Siegel May 2026

Scaling Of Thermal Conductivity In The Eliot Formation, Ryan Todd Siegel

Master's Theses and Capstones

Heat flow governs the performance of geothermal energy systems, and thermal conductivity is the primary material property controlling subsurface heat transfer. This study investigates heat flow through media with spatially variable thermal conductivity within the heterogeneous Eliot Formation, a metamorphic unit extending across the coastal region of northeast New England. The objective of this work is to develop an approach for scaling thermal conductivity from core-scale measurements to field-scale values representative of geothermal borefield systems.Divided bar thermal conductivity testing, petrographic analyses, geological observations, and existing literature were integrated to construct a MODFLOW model that captures the heterogeneous thermal behavior of …

Climate Vulnerability In Context: Interpretations Of Risk And Reality In Maine And New Hampshire, Sophie Hope Goodwin May 2026

Climate Vulnerability In Context: Interpretations Of Risk And Reality In Maine And New Hampshire, Sophie Hope Goodwin

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examines the relationship between place-based climate vulnerability and belief in anthropogenic climate change in Maine and New Hampshire. While exposure-based models suggest that direct experience with environmental hazards should increase climate belief, sociological research emphasizes the role of political ideology and social context in shaping attitudes. Using county-level measures from the U.S. Climate Vulnerability Index combined with individual survey data from the Pine Tree State Poll and Granite State Poll, this study evaluates whether multidimensional climate vulnerability is associated with belief that climate change is happening now and is primarily caused by human activities. Results from three-step logistic …

Walking The Thermal Landscape: Modeling Ecophysiological Responses Of Ecotherms To Marine Heatwaves, Andrew Robert Villeneuve May 2026

Walking The Thermal Landscape: Modeling Ecophysiological Responses Of Ecotherms To Marine Heatwaves, Andrew Robert Villeneuve

Doctoral Dissertations

Climate change is accelerating the frequency of extreme heat events in the world’s oceans. These heatwaves can pose critical challenges for marine organisms, especially ectotherm foundation species who have experienced increasingly frequent and severe mass mortality events (MMEs). Predicting when, where, and to what extent populations experience heat-induced mortality is a critical knowledge gap in our ability to anticipate, mitigate, and recover from catastrophic MMEs. Here, I test the application of physiological nonlinear thermal tolerance landscapes (TTLs) and dynamic tolerance algorithms to translate dynamic heatwave events into ectotherm mortality predictions. In chapter 2, I conducted a simulation exploration of how …

Integrity in Research and Scholarship

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have existed for years, the recent arrival of widespread generative AI writing tools such as ChatGPT has provoked varied reactions in the scholarly community worldwide. Undoubtedly easy access to such tools may help to level the scholarly playing field for certain groups, particularly those with limited writing skills or proficiency with English as the primary language for written and oral communication of research and scholarship. There are, however, concerns about these tools, including, but not limited to, the accuracy, consistency, and bias of the information generated, appropriate acknowledgement of source material, and the tools’ lack …
