Examining The Impact Of Stream Permanence On Headwater Stream Carbon Emissions, Hannah D. Conroy, Erin R. Hotchkiss, Kaelin M. Cawley, Keli Goodman, Jeremy B. Jones, Wilfred M. Wollheim, David Butman

Faculty Publications

Quantifying headwater stream carbon emissions is important for our understanding of the global carbon cycle because these emissions (an estimated 0.93-1.15 Pg C year) can be substantial compared to the terrestrial flux. Headwater stream networks can have high emissions due to their coupling with the terrestrial environment and high turbulence with some estimates predicting headwater stream networks can contribute 70% of the global riverine stream emissions. These carbon emissions are challenging to predict, especially with regards to headwater stream network spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The majority of headwater streams exhibit changes in stream network area on a seasonal basis, and these locations …

On 2022 February 15–16, multiple spacecraft measured one of the most intense solar energetic particle (SEP) events observed so far in Solar Cycle 25. This study provides an overview of interesting observations made by multiple spacecraft during this event. Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and BepiColombo were close to each other at 0.34–0.37 au (a radial separation of ∼0.03 au) as they were impacted by the flank of the associated coronal mass ejection (CME). At about 100° in the retrograde direction and 1.5 au away from the Sun, the radiation detector on board the Curiosity surface rover observed the largest ground-level …

2024 Monitoring Program Update For Five Corners Intersection, Tisbury, Ma, Daniel Macadam, James J. Houle Feb 2024

2024 Monitoring Program Update For Five Corners Intersection, Tisbury, Ma, Daniel Macadam, James J. Houle

UNH Stormwater Center

The UNH Stormwater Center has conducted three years of monitoring of the stormwater catch basin at the intersection in Tisbury, MA known as “Five Corners.” The intersection is known to all residents and many visitors to the island for its frequent flooding. The goal of this project was to gather empirical data, observe, and characterize the rainfall events to quantify the conditions which result in the flooding at the intersection. The monitoring was performed with level loggers in the catch basin to measure the water level within the catch basin as well as when it exceeded the street level (flooding). …

Observational Features Of Charge Distribution In Earth's Inner Magnetosphere, Lai Gao, Chao Shen, Yufei Zhou, Yong Ji, Zuyin Pu, George Parks, Christopher T. Russell, Gang Zeng, Lan Ma, Roy B. Torbert, Yanyan Yang, James L. Burch Feb 2024

Observational Features Of Charge Distribution In Earth's Inner Magnetosphere, Lai Gao, Chao Shen, Yufei Zhou, Yong Ji, Zuyin Pu, George Parks, Christopher T. Russell, Gang Zeng, Lan Ma, Roy B. Torbert, Yanyan Yang, James L. Burch

Faculty Publications

Understanding the motion of charged particles in the electromagnetic field in the inner magnetosphere is essential for space science and space weather. Charge accumulation can occur due to the dipole magnetic and convective electric fields in this region. However, until the recent Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, there were few means to detect charge distribution in situ. We report unambiguous in situ observation of the spatial distribution of the excess charge density in the inner magnetosphere by the MMS mission. We find that a positive (negative) charge accumulates in the dusk (dawn) side inner magnetospheres, which is contrary to the long …

Forecasting The Strength Of Graphene Nanoparticles-Reinforced Cementitious Composites Using Ensemble Learning Algorithms, Majid Khan, Roz-Ud-Din Nassar, Waqar Anwar, Mazhar Rasheed, Taoufik Najeh, Yaser Gamil, Furqan Farooq Feb 2024

Forecasting The Strength Of Graphene Nanoparticles-Reinforced Cementitious Composites Using Ensemble Learning Algorithms, Majid Khan, Roz-Ud-Din Nassar, Waqar Anwar, Mazhar Rasheed, Taoufik Najeh, Yaser Gamil, Furqan Farooq

Faculty Publications

Contemporary infrastructure requires structural elements with enhanced mechanical strength and durability. Integrating nanomaterials into concrete is a promising solution to improve concrete strength and durability. However, the intricacies of such nanoscale cementitious composites are highly complex. Traditional regression models encounter limitations in capturing these intricate compositions to provide accurate and reliable estimations. This study focuses on developing robust prediction models for the compressive strength (CS) of graphene nanoparticle-reinforced cementitious composites (GrNCC) through machine learning (ML) algorithms. Three ML models, bagging regressor (BR), decision tree (DT), and AdaBoost regressor (AR), were employed to predict CS based on a comprehensive dataset of …

Southern Maine, New Hampshire, And Northern Massachusetts Continental Shelf Geophysical Database: 2022 Field Campaign – Grain Size Data, Station Summaries, And Seafloor Photographs, Larry G. Ward, Rachel C. Morrison, Michael Bogonko

Data Catalog

Presented in this data report are the geophysical data collected during a major field campaign in 2022, with the purpose of obtaining ground truth for the expansion and improvement of high-resolution surficial geology maps of the western Gulf of Maine (WGOM) and for the description of reference sites developed for future evaluations of acoustic systems (Ward et al., 2021a; 2021b). Data from the UNH Ocean Engineering 972 Hydrographic Field Course classes in 2021 and 2022 are also included. This expansion of the geophysical database is being used to verify seafloor classifications in previously mapped areas that lack sufficient data, and …
