Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg Sep 2020

Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg

Law Faculty Scholarship

Federal securities regulation originally divided corporate finance into two neat categories, public and private. In 1933, private financing was limited to “sophisticated” investors but otherwise lightly regulated. Public financing became heavily regulated. In 1982, the SEC introduced Reg D, which introduced the concept of “general solicitation” to clarify the distinction between public and private offerings. Reg D is well understood to prohibit newspaper advertisements and permit direct solicitations to venture capital investors. This enabled great wealth consolidation in regions like Silicon Valley while effectively banning general solicitations in private offerings.

Now, social media communication challenges the definition of “general solicitation.” …

Experiments And Modeling Of Plastic Anisotropy And Ductile Fracture Under Multiaxial Loading, Madhav Baral Sep 2020

Experiments And Modeling Of Plastic Anisotropy And Ductile Fracture Under Multiaxial Loading, Madhav Baral

Doctoral Dissertations

The implementation of new materials for light-weighting purposes in the automotive industry has often been hindered due to the low ductility of these materials, as well as inadequate empirical knowledge about their fracture behavior and inadequate material modeling techniques. This thesis addresses these issues through extensive experimental and numerical study of plastic anisotropy and ductile fracture of several aluminum alloys and a stainless-steel. The test materials used for this study include AA365 die-casting, AA6013 and AA6111 aluminum sheets, AA6260 aluminum tube and SS304L stainless-steel microtube. The plastic anisotropy is assessed using uniaxial tension, plane-strain tension and disc compression experiments for …

Evaluation And Identification Of Cracking Susceptibility Of Asphalt Binders And Mixtures By Incorporation Of Effects Of Aging On Performance, Runhua Zhang Sep 2020

Evaluation And Identification Of Cracking Susceptibility Of Asphalt Binders And Mixtures By Incorporation Of Effects Of Aging On Performance, Runhua Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

An important aspect which causes a significant effect on performance of asphalt materials is aging. With increase of aging, asphalt materials lose their relaxation capabilities and becomes more susceptible to cracking. Thus, an improved understanding of how aging impacts the cracking behavior of asphalt materials will allow for design of more reliable and durable asphalt pavements. In this study, different laboratory aging levels were performed to simulate different periods of pavement service life. Various performance tests (including Complex Modulus (E*), Simplified Viscoelastic Continuum Damage (S-VECD), Semi Circular Bending (SCB) and Disk Shaped Compact Tension (DCT) tests for asphalt mixtures; Frequency …

Dynamic Performance Of Partially Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Sayedmasoud Mousavi Sep 2020

Dynamic Performance Of Partially Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Sayedmasoud Mousavi

Doctoral Dissertations

The vast majority of surface structures are located on or surrounded by unsaturated and partially saturated soil deposits. Previous studies revealed that degree of saturation in soils can significantly impact the seismic performance of geotechnical systems. Yet, the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms by which the degree of saturation impacts their performance during seismic loading is not mature. This Ph.D. dissertation aimed to evaluate and characterize the dynamic response of soils including excess pore pressure generation, induced volumetric deformation, shear modulus, and material damping at different states of saturation and a wide range of degrees of saturation. Three different desaturation …

Recursive Path Following In Log Polar Space For Autonomous Leaf Contour Extraction, Anna Claire Snarski Sep 2020

Recursive Path Following In Log Polar Space For Autonomous Leaf Contour Extraction, Anna Claire Snarski

Master's Theses and Capstones

Use of image segmentation has caused agriculture advancement in species identification, chlorophyll measurements, plant growth and disease detection. Most methods require some level of manual segmentation as autonomous image segmentation is a difficult task. Methods with the highest segmentation precision use a priori knowledge obtained from user input which is time consuming and subjective. This research focuses on providing current segmentation methods a pre-processing model that autonomously extracts an internal and external contour of the leaf. The model converts the uniform Cartesian images to non-uniformly sampled images in log polar space. A recursive path following algorithm was designed to map …

The House That Built Lee: Reinterpreting Robert E. Lee Through His Life At Arlington House, Cecilia Paquette Sep 2020

The House That Built Lee: Reinterpreting Robert E. Lee Through His Life At Arlington House, Cecilia Paquette

Master's Theses and Capstones

Since 1955, Arlington House has been a memorial to Confederate General Robert E. Lee, despite his beliefs in slavery and white supremacy. For almost a century, scholarship on Lee has been comprised of more positive interpretations, yet historians have recently begun to challenge these versions of Lee by examining his life more fully. This study aims to view Lee through the history of Arlington House, in order to more closely understand his character and to underscore that he is not as noble as was once thought. Building on the history of Arlington’s enslaved community this thesis asks: how did the …

Five Takeaways From High Court's Term, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] Last month, the Supreme Court wrapped up it 2019-2020 term with a flurry of significant rulings.

The court confirmed that Congress and state attorneys general may subpoena third parties for evidence when legitimately investigating a sitting president; held that the executive branch must engage in reasoned decision-making when rescinding administrative protections for a vulnerable population (i.e., beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program); and defined the scope of the president's power to remove officials from high office.

The court also clarified that federal anti-discrimination employment protections extend to LGBTQ workers; held that states may punish members …

Using a new approach that constrains thermodynamic modeling of aerosol composition with measured gas-to-particle partitioning of inorganic nitrate, we estimate the acidity levels for aerosol sampled in the South Korean planetary boundary layer during the NASA/NIER KORUS-AQ field campaign. The pH (mean ± 1σ = 2.43 ± 0.68) and aerosol liquid water content determined were then used to determine the chemical regime of the inorganic fraction of particulate matter (PM) sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate availability. We found that the aerosol formation is always sensitive to HNO3 levels, especially in highly polluted regions, while it is only exclusively sensitive to …

Law Faculty Scholarship

[excerpt] "This Article revisits and confronts the growing caseload and congestion problems plaguing the federal judiciary. It begins by tracing the history and political economy surrounding judiciary reform. It then updates data on caseloads, processing times, certiorari petitions, en banc review, and other measures of judicial performance, revealing expanding caseloads and growing complexity and fragmentation of federal law. Part III explores the political, institutional, and human causes of the logjam over judiciary reform and offers an antidote: a commission tasked with developing a judiciary reform act that would not go into effect until 2030. The “2030 Commission” members would …

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

We discuss Wind observations of a long and slow magnetic cloud (MC) propagating through large-amplitude Alfvén waves (LAAWs). The MC axis has a strong component along GSE X, as also confirmed by a Grad-Shafranov reconstruction. It is overtaking the solar wind at a speed roughly equal to the upstream Alfvén speed, leading to a weak shock wave 17 hr ahead. We give evidence to show that the nominal sheath region is populated by LAAWs: (i) a well-defined de Hoffmann-Teller frame in which there is excellent correlation between the field and flow vectors, (ii) constant field and total pressure, and (iii) …

When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Face-To-Face Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Jun 2020

When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Face-To-Face Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes naturally occurring video-recorded openings during which participants make the sensory social through the action of registering—calling joint attention to a selected, publicly perceiv- able referent so others shift their sensory attention to it. It examines sequence-initial actions that register referents for which a participant is regarded as responsible. Findings demonstrate a systematic preference organization which observably guides when and how people initiate registering sequences sensitive to ownership of, and displayed stance toward, the target referent. Analysis shows how registering an owned referent achieves intersubjectivity and puts involved participants’ face, affiliation, and social relationship on the line. A …
