The use of engineered cells, tissues, and organs has the opportunity to change the way injuries and diseases are treated. Commercialization of these groundbreaking technologies has been limited in part by the complex and costly nature of their manufacture. Process-related variability and even small changes in the manufacturing process of a living product will impact its quality. Without real-time integrated detection, the magnitude and mechanism of that impact are largely unknown. Real-time and non-destructive sensor technologies are key for in-process insight and ensuring a consistent product throughout commercial scale-up and/or scale-out. The application of a measurement technology into a manufacturing …

Rapid Arctic environmental change affects the entire Earth system as thawing permafrost ecosystems release greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Understanding how much permafrost carbon will be released, over what time frame, and what the relative emissions of carbon dioxide and methane will be is key for understanding the impact on global climate. In addition, the response of vegetation in a warming climate has the potential to offset at least some of the accelerating feedback to the climate from permafrost carbon. Temperature, organic carbon, and ground ice are key regulators for determining the impact of permafrost ecosystems on the global carbon …

This paper identifies the electrochemical properties of individual facets of anisotropic layered conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based on M3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene)2 (M3(HHTP)2) (M = Co, Ni). The electroanalytical advantages of each facet are then applied toward the electrochemical detection of neurochemicals. By employing epitaxially controlled deposition of M3(HHTP)2 MOFs on electrodes, the contribution of the basal plane ({001} facets) and edge sites ({100} facets) of these MOFs can be individually determined using electrochemical characterization techniques. Despite having a lower observed heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, the {001} facets of the M3(HHTP)2 systems prove more selective and sensitive for the detection of dopamine …

Minimal Covid-19 Quieting Measured In The Deep, Offshore Waters Of The U.S. Outer Continental Shelf, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, S. Bruce Martin, Kim Lowell, Christopher Verlinden
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Using a 2-year time series (2019–2020) of 1-min sound pressure level averages from seven sites, the extension of COVID-related quieting documented in coastal soundscapes to deep (approximately 200–900 m) waters off the southeastern United States was assessed. Sites ranged in distance to the continental shelf break and shipping lanes. Sound level decreases in 2020 were observed at sites closest to the shelf break and shipping lanes but were inconsistent with the timing of shipping changes related to a COVID-19 slowdown. These observations are consistent with increased numbers of vessel tracks in 2020 compared to 2019 at a majority of sites.

The disease burden and healthcare costs of psychiatric diseases along with the pursuit to understand their underlying biochemical mechanisms have led to psychiatric biomarker investigations. Current advances in evaluating candidate biomarkers for psychiatric diseases, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), focus on determining a specific biomarker signature or profile. The origins of candidate biomarkers are heterogenous, ranging from genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, while incorporating associations with clinical characterization. Prior to clinical use, candidate biomarkers must be validated by large multi-site clinical studies, which can be used to determine the ideal MDD biomarker signature. Therefore, identifying valid biomarkers has been challenging, …

Do We Really Know What Is In Our Food? The Connection Between Dietary Mycotoxin Exposure And Pediatric Crohn’S Disease, Susan L. Gonya
Do We Really Know What Is In Our Food? The Connection Between Dietary Mycotoxin Exposure And Pediatric Crohn’S Disease, Susan L. Gonya
Master's Theses and Capstones
AbstractBACKGROUND: The incidence of pediatric Crohn’s disease (CD) has increased over the past few decades. The etiology of CD has not yet been elucidated. Still, researchers have identified variables associated with the disease process, including genetic predisposition, environmental triggers like a poor-quality diet, air pollution, water pollution, and a dysbiotic microbiome with increased fungal diversity as predisposing factors. Fungal mycotoxin contamination in the food supply from toxicants like Deoxynivalenol (DON), a highly prevalent gastrointestinal irritant, has largely been ignored as a potential factor influencing the fungal dysbiosis and symptoms associated with the disease process. It is hypothesized that global and …
