The Synthesis, Characterization, And Reactions Of Diphosphine Monoxide Complexes Of Selected Transition Metals, Fontaine Cosby Bradley

The synthesis, characterization and reactions of transition metal complexes containing diphosphine oxide, R(,2)P-P(O)PR(,2), and diphosphoxane, R(,2)P-O-PR(,2), ligands have been studied. The diphosphoxane tautomer, which is unstable in the free state has been observed to be stabilized by coordination to Mo(O) and Cu(I).

The reactivity of cis-(CO)(,4)Mo(R(,2)P-O-PR(,2)) (R = Ph, ptolyl) towards halogen-oxidation has been studied. The new seven-coordinate complexes (CO)(,3)Mo(R(,2)P-O-PR(,2))X(,2) (R = Ph, X = I; R = p-tolyl, X = Br), as well as the known (CO)(,3)Mo(Ph(,2)PCH(,2)PPh(,2))I(,2) have been observed to exhibit temperature dependent ('31)P NMR consistent with rapid topological isomerization and intramolecular rearrangement of a given isomer.

In Tubularia larynx and T. indivisa, interstitial cells proliferate in the ectoderm of the gonophore stalk and peduncle of the raceme and migrate in the endoderm to the apex of the young gonophore buds where they proliferate in the endoderm to form the entocodon and germ cell mass. Eggs are produced sequentially in the gonophores of both species. Each egg is the result of fusion of 1200-2000 cells interconnected by cytoplasmic bridges into a large complex. At the center of each complex are 15-18 morphologically similar cells, all of which begin meiosis and form germinal vesicles and are considered oocytes. …

Nitrogen Metabolism And Iron Reduction In Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (Nitrate, Fixation, Magnetic Bacterium), Dennis Alfred Bazylinski

Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum strain MS-1 grew microaerobically but not anaerobically with NO(,3)('-) or NH(,4)('+) as the sole nitrogen source. Cell yields varied directly with NO(,3)('-) concentration under microaerobic conditions. Products of NO(,3)('-) reduction by growing cells included NH(,4)('+), N(,2)O, NO, and N(,2) but not NO(,2)('-) or NH(,2)OH. The inclusion of NH(,4)('+) in growth medium prevented NO(,3)('-) reduction to NH(,4)('+) but not to N(,2)O or N(,2). Cells consumed O(,2) while denitrifying and this appears to be the first described species with an absolute requirement for O(,2) while denitrifying.

Cultures grown with NO(,3)('-), in contrast to NH(,4)('+), contained fewer cells without magnetosomes. Moreover, …

The experimental systems studied in this dissertation are designed to investigate the effect of diet on incidence rates of cancer. These investigations involve the chemical induction of tumors in experimental animals in order to test the chemopreventative effects of various substances. Both tumor number and rate of tumor development are important in evaluating the effects of a chemopreventative agent. This is made difficult, when multiple tumors occur, by the confounding of the number of induced tumors and their time of detection. This confounding occurs because experiments are terminated before all induced tumors have been detected. Fewer tumors observed in one …

Ecology Of Rocky Subtidal Communities: The Role Of Modiolus Modiolus (L) And The Influence Of Disturbance, Competition, And Mutualism, Jon Drew Witman

This study presents an analysis of physical and biological processes regulating the structure of rocky subtidal communities off coastal New Hampshire and southern Maine, USA, with emphasis on the ecology of the horse mussel Modiolus modiolus (L.). Quantitative sampling and multivariate analysis revealed 3 communities: (1) Modiolus community; (2) 30 m community of species with highest densities outside mussel beds; (3) 8-18 m community of species with maximal densities outside mussel beds.

Controlled field experiments, a natural grazing experiment, and long-term photographic monitoring (5 yrs) enabled patterns of Modiolus community structure to be related to the processes maintaining them. Bivalve, …

Proctolin And An Endogenous Proctolin-Like Peptide Enhance The Contractility Of The Limulus Heart, Winsor H. Watson Iii, George J. Augustine, Robert E. Sullivan

1. Synthetic proctolin increases the force but not the rate of heart contractions of Limulus in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The threshold of this effect is 3 × 10−10M and the ED50 is approximately 10−8M.
2. At concentrations up to 10−7 M, proctolin has no effect on the rhythmic electrical activity of the isolated cardiac ganglion, and it does not change the simple and compound postsynaptic potentials recorded at the cardiac neuromuscular junction.
3. Proctolin acts directly on the cardiac muscle fibres. Electrically stimulated myocardia show a proctolin-induced increase in contraction amplitude with the same concentration dependence as the intact heart.

Alternative Explanation For Excision Repair Deficiency Caused By The Polaex1 Mutation, Alan F. Wahl, Joel W. Hockensmith, Stanley Kowalski, Robert A. Bambara

An investigation of the mechanism of the polAexl mutation in vitro suggested that the excision repair deficiency observed in vivo does not result from an inability of the enzyme to nick translate. The defect appears to reside in the inability of the enzyme to effectively generate a nick structure to serve as a substrate for DNA ligase.
