Leg 85 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project operated in the eastern central Pacific in the region of the equatorial highproductivity belt. We recovered uppermost Eocene to Quaternary reference sections amenable to fine-scale stratigraphic and paleoceanographic research, using primarily the hydraulic piston corer. Four sites (572 to 575) were drilled along an east-west (about 114 to 133°W) and north-south (about 0.5 to 6°N) transect across the equatorial belt. At Site 572 an apparently complete lower middle Miocene to Quaternary sequence was recovered: the sediment sections are dominantly siliceous-calcareous oozes and chalks, and sediment accumulation rates were high (30 to 60 …

Neurohormonal Modulation Of The Limulus Heart: Amine Actions On Neuromuscular Transmission And Cardiac Muscle, Winsor H. Watson Iii, T. Hoshi, J. Colburne, George J. Augustine

The responses of Limulus cardiac neuromuscular junctions and cardiac muscle cells to four endogenous amines were determined in order to identify the cellular targets underlying amine modulation of heartbeat amplitude. The amines increased the amplitude of the Limulus heartbeat, with dopamine (DA) being more potent than octopamine, epinephrine or norepinephrine. The effect of DA on heartbeat amplitude was not blocked by phentolamine. DA enhanced the contractility of deganglionated heart muscle, with time course and dose-dependence similar to its effect on the intact heart. In Vitro Propagation Of Dionaea Muscipula, Subhash C. Minocha

Surface-sterilized leaf sections from mature Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula Ellis) plants produced several adventitious plantlets when cultured on full strength Lin and Staba medium or a reduced strength Murashige and Skoog growth medium supplemented with 0.5-25 μM cytokinin. Zeatin at 9.0 or 22.5 μm was found to be most effective in inducing adventitious shoot formation. These shoots were excised and subcultured on a low salt medium to generate roots. The rooted plants then were transferred to sterilized peat moss and grown to maturity. A large number of plants could be regenerated through repeated subculture of leaf segments.

This article reviews empirical research to discover what support exists for theories that attempt to explain why adults become sexually interested in and involved with immature children. These theories are first organized into four basic categories: emotional congruence-why the adult congruence - why an emotional need to relate to a child; sexual arousl-why the adult could become sexually aroused by a child; blockage - why alternative sources of sexual and emotional gratification are not available; or disinhibition - why the adult is not deterred from such an interest by normal prohibitions.
