Effects Of Microhabitat On Recruitment Variation In A Gulf Of Maine Reef Fish, Philip S. Levin

Variation in recruitment of larvae can be important in determining temporal and spatial variat~on in adult demersal fish populations. Thls study examines how microhabitat use by newly settled cunner Tautogolabrus adspersus (Pisces. Labrldae) influences small-scale recruitment variation. The microhabitat occupied by cunner recruits was characterized by quantifying 14 attributes of the microhab~tat at 2 sites in Southern Malne, USA. Attributes at randomly selected sites were also recorded. Cunner recruits were distributed nonrandomly anlong microhabitats wlthin sltes. Recruit presence was positively associated with the presence of macrophytes and negabvely associated with microhabitats of low structural complexity. Angular Dependence Of 12-Khz Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter, Christian De Moustier, Dimitri Alexandrou

The angular dependence of seafloor acoustic backscatter,measured with a 12‐kHz multi narrow‐beam echo‐sounder at two sites in the central North Pacific with water depths of 1500 and 3100 m, respectively, has been determined for incidence angles between 0° and 20°. The acoustic data consist of quadrature samples of the beamformed echoes received on each of the 16 2.66° beams of a Sea Beam echo‐sounder. These data are subjected to adaptive noise cancelling for sidelobe interference rejection, and the centroid of each echo is determined. Risk Assessment For Developmental Toxicity: Airborne Occupational Exposure To Ethanol And Iodine, Donald R. Mattison

Dean Mattison explains hazard identification, hazard characterization and exposure characterization as furnishing a foundation for Risk assessment generally. He then illustrates their application in assessing the fetal Risk posed by two common substances. Ultimately, he argues that only after Risks have been so examined can women of child bearing age (or anyone) decide what if any measures are appropriate to avoid them.

Amalgam Fillings: Do Dental Patients Have A Right To Informed Consent, Michael A. Royal

Recent animal studies have shown significant mercury absorption from dental fillings and resulted in unfavorable media attention. Yet, an FDA advisory committee has found no evidence of Risk to dental patients, and many dentists believe that patients are being unnecessarily alarmed. The paper reviews the history of amalgam fillings through the recent animal studies and concludes that the Risk, whatever it may prove to be, is sufficiently high to warrant permitting patients to choose between amalgam and alternative dental filling materials.
