Climate Change Resiliency In Coastal New Hampshire Roads With The Application Of Natural And Nature-Based Features, Lauren Emma Dwyre
Climate Change Resiliency In Coastal New Hampshire Roads With The Application Of Natural And Nature-Based Features, Lauren Emma Dwyre
Master's Theses and Capstones
Coastal communities rely heavily on their road network for the transportation of goods, services, and people. However, rising sea levels due to climate change are causing many of the communities’ transportation infrastructure to become vulnerable to coastal stressors. Understanding how sea-level rise (SLR) will impact pavement performance and identifying adaptation strategies is vital for making coastal communities more resilient. Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) are becoming increasingly recognized as an adaptation solution to protect coastal communities from SLR-induced stressors and provide ecological and social benefits. This research aims to identify the linkages between storm surge and pavement damage and identify …

Spatially Revealing The Liver’S Genetics In The Dehydration Resistant Cactus Mouse, Sean Pierre-Louis
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study is motivated by the global issue of climate change and its impact on the increasing prevalence of hot and arid environments, which in turn leads to water scarcity. While acknowledging these challenges, our research focuses on understanding the how desert-dwelling cactus mouse, P. eremicus, have adapt to their native desert environment. Using spatial transcriptomic sequencing, we created a spatial atlas of gene expression in hepatocytes and examined the baseline expression patterns in different zones. In this spatial atlas, hepatocyte genes were sequenced from their original spatial location in the tissue to establish the zonal patterns with neighboring hepatocytes. …
Variable Light Penetration And Chlorophyll Concentrations From A Vertical Profiler In The Gulf Of Maine, With Implications For Remote Sensing And Ecosystem Modeling, Terence W. O'Brien
Variable Light Penetration And Chlorophyll Concentrations From A Vertical Profiler In The Gulf Of Maine, With Implications For Remote Sensing And Ecosystem Modeling, Terence W. O'Brien
Master's Theses and Capstones
Variability in light field penetration into the ocean alters both radiant heat flux and oceanic primary production. Both are increasingly important in the context of quantifying biologically-mediated atmospheric carbon fluxes and sea surface temperature increase in a changing climate. Accurate determination of light penetration into the upper ocean depends upon accurate estimates of the depth-resolved water absorption and attenuation properties through the water column, properties that are often assumed homogeneous vertically and slowly variant in time. This thesis explores all-new Gulf of Maine datasets collected using a moored vertical profiler that provides sub-hourly light attenuation profiles with sub-m vertical resolution …
Rare Earth Element Distributions In Forest Soils Across Bedrock Gradients In New Hampshire And Vermont, Ashley Grengs
Rare Earth Element Distributions In Forest Soils Across Bedrock Gradients In New Hampshire And Vermont, Ashley Grengs
Master's Theses and Capstones
Within Earth surface systems, forests factor critically in carbon cycling and sequestration and accordingly play an important role in many climate change mitigation strategies. Predictive models of carbon storage require assessments of carbon storage as well as nutrient cycling, which, in turn, has long-term impacts on carbon storage. Nutrient allocations affect tree biomass, leaf growth, stem density, and biodiversity. Yet, bedrock contributions to nutrient allocations are not routinely quantified, even though bedrock compositions can influence soil types, soil pH, and tree species within forest.
Here, I expand on previously developed approaches to conduct a comparative study between eight sites across …

Evaluation Of A Wave Powered Water Pump Performance By Ocean Field Testing And Wec-Sim Modeling, Chelsea Kimball
Master's Theses and Capstones
A rising demand for macroalgae (or seaweed) has led researchers to seek out methods of increasing macroalgae aquaculture yields. Macroalgae is a food product, and may be used in biofuel, animal feed, and fertilizer. Applying upwelling technology to macroalgae aquaculture has been shown to increase biomass yield. A wave-powered upwelling device (or water pump) generates cold, nutrient-rich water flow to the surface of an aquaculture operation. A wave pump device developed at University of New Hampshire was refurbished and outfitted with instrumentation to determine its performance. Testing in the laboratory on both the device and instrumentation was conducted to prepare …

In the accompanying Comment1, He et al. argue that the determinant role of microbial carbon use efficiency in global soil organic carbon (SOC) storage shown in Tao et al. (2023)2 was overestimated because carbon inputs were neglected in our data analysis while they suggest that our model-based analysis could be biased and model-dependent. Their argument is based on a different choice of independent variables in the data analysis and a sensitivity analysis of two process-based models other than that used in our study. We agree that both carbon inputs and outputs (as mediated by microbial processes) matter when predicting SOC …

Across biomes, soil biodiversity promotes ecosystem functions. However, whether this relationship will be maintained under climate change is uncertain. Here, using two long-term warming experiments, we investigated how warming affects the relationship between ecosystem functions and microbial diversity across seasons, soil horizons, and warming duration. The soils in these warming experiments were heated +5 °C above ambient for 13 or 28 years. We measured seven different ecosystem functions representative of soil carbon cycling, soil nitrogen cycling, or nutrient pools. We also surveyed bacterial and fungal community diversity. We found that the relationship between ecosystem function and bacterial diversity and the …

Science is increasingly a collaborative pursuit. Although the modern scientific enterprise owes much to individuals working at the core of their field, humanity is increasingly confronted by highly complex problems that require the integration of a variety of disciplinary and methodological expertise. In 2016, the U.S. National Science Foundation launched an initiative prioritizing support for convergence research as a means of “solving vexing research problems, in particular, complex problems focusing on societal needs.” We discuss our understanding of the objectives of convergence research and describe in detail the conditions and processes likely to generate successful convergence research. We use our …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Diving is central to the foraging strategies of many marine mammals and seabirds. Still, the effect of dive depth on foraging cost remains elusive because energy expenditure is difficult to measure at fine temporal scales in wild animals. We used depth and acceleration data from eight lactating California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) to model body density and investigate the effect of dive depth and tissue density on rates of energy expenditure. We calculated body density in 5 s intervals from the rate of gliding descent. We modeled body density across depth in each dive, revealing high tissue densities and diving …

In this commentary, we build on work by Gurung and colleagues which highlighted gender inequity in the global mental health research workforce in Nepal (Gurung et al., 2021). We seek to increase awareness of the under-representation of women in global mental health research and its consequences, and we call for change. By women, we refer to all people who identify as women, including trans people. The commentary is informed by conversations with women who are global mental health researchers in the Global North and South at various stages of their careers.

Increasingly, cover crops are being adopted for the purpose of improving soil health, yet the timescale and magnitude by which living annual cover crops might modify soil chemical and biological aspects of soil health is not well understood. At the same time, there is growing interest among farmers in cover crop mixtures due to perceptions that species-rich cover crop communities will enhance soil health relative to monocultures. In a field experiment in southeast New Hampshire, we investigated how groups of cover crops grown as monocultures and mixtures for specific seasonal niches (winter/spring, summer, and fall) influenced levels of soil nitrogen …

Climate change and associated shifts in marine prey communities can alter food availability for foraging seabirds. This issue is illustrated in the Gulf of Maine by the northward shift of Atlantic butterfish (Peprilus triacanthus; hereafter butterfish) and their subsequent increase in seabird diets. Here, we examine effects of butterfish in diets of the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), a threatened species in this region. Our objectives were to evaluate butterfish suitability for tern chick diet through observing handling time and feeding success, to examine effects of butterfish on tern chick growth, and to explore signs of adaptive foraging in adults. The …

Children grow up in homes where varying environmental and socioeconomic contexts have a bearing on their emotional and behavioral health (EBH). This study used data from a representative sample of the child supplement of the US National Health Information Survey (NHIS) and applied the social determinants of health (SDoH) framework to explore factors associated with child EBH. We conducted a path analysis of the child’s EBH measured by the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) from their macro and socioeconomic contexts, e.g., policy, household, and other health system risk factors. For children in the sample, aged 4 to 17 years old …
