Studies Of Rotationally Inelastic Collisions In Argon + Hydrogen Fluoride, James J C Barrett

In this dissertation we examine rotationally inelastic collisions involving an atom plus a diatom. We concentrate specifically on the Ar + HF system. In these investigations we employ a number of theoretical methods, including classical trajectories, quantum close-coupled calculations and semiclassical methods, to examine the differential cross sections in Ar + HF. We also investigate the effects of various "sudden" approximations on the scattering dynamics and the limitations of these approximations.

Through this work we were able to identify a new quantum feature in rotationally inelastic scattering. By studying the time evolution of transition amplitudes (rather than probabilities) we are …

Silk Use During Proecdysis In The Spider Araneus Cavaticus (Araneae: Araneidae), Mark Anthony Townley

Major ampullate (MaA) and minor ampullate (MiA) silk glands of juvenile Araneus cavaticus were examined by dissection at various times relative to ecdysis. Several days before ecdysis the single, larger pairs of MaA and MiA glands (termed 'primary' MaA and MiA glands) become non-functional and remain so until ecdysis. Nevertheless, proecdysial spiders are able to draw ampullate fibers due to the presence of smaller pairs of MaA and MiA glands (termed 'open secondary' MaA and MiA glands) which are functional at this time. It appears that these open secondary MaA and MiA glands are intended for use only during proecdysis. …

Since its first observation in the Gulf of Maine (Northwest Atlantic) in 1987, the epiphytic bryozoan Membranipora membranacea has become the dominant epiphyte on laminarian kelps. This note describes changes in the structure of a kelp bed at Cape Neddick (Mane, USA) after the coincident increase of M. membranacea, evaluates the potential causes of the observed changes, and documents the shortterm recovery of the kelp bed. Using a case study, the authors explore the mediating role of organizational culture in individual Risk-taking decisions and behaviors. They argue that organizational culture can establish unique conditions that lead to highly reliable performance of high-Risk, undesired tasks. The authors also discuss the need for further research and its implications for Risk management.

Risk Estimation And Expert Judgment: The Case Of Yucca Mountain, Kristin Shrader-Frechette

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Professor Shrader-Frechette discusses factors responsible for acute disagreement between the federal government and Nevada citizens over potential Risks at Yucca Mountain and focuses on the use of expert judgment, concluding that some of them appear to exemplify "bad science." That aside, she argues that 1,000 year predictions cannot be made from current knowledge of geology or, e.g., institutional behavior and concludes that permanent disposal of radioactive waste is currently impossible.

The ars operon of the conjugative R-factor R773 encodes an oxyanion pump that catalyzes extrusion of arsenicals from cells of Escherichia coli. The oxyanion translocation ATPase is composed of two polypeptides, the catalytic ArsA protein and the intrinsic membrane protein, ArsB. The topology of regions of the ArsB protein in the inner membrane was determined using a variety of gene fusions. Random gene fusions with lacZ and phoA were generated using transposon mutagenesis. A series of gene fusions with blaM were constructed in vitro using a beta-lactamase fusion vector. To localize individual segments of the ArsB protein, a ternary fusion …

This paper describes a rain-event driven, process-oriented simulation model, DNDC, for the evolution of nitrous oxide (N₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and dinitrogen (N₂) from agricultural soils. The model consists of three submodels: thermal-hydraulic, decomposition, and denitrification. Basic climate data drive the model to produce dynamic soil temperature and moisture profiles and shifts of aerobic-anaerobic conditions. Additional input data include soil texture and biochemical properties as well as agricultural practices. Examining a recent case in which the U.S. Supreme Court approved the collection of blood and urine samples from railroad employees, the authors conclude that, in attempting to improve railroad safety, both majority and minority opinions reflected undue emphasis on technical issues and inadequate attention to the intangible social values underlying traditional Constitutional rights to privacy.

Old Remedies In The Biotechnology Age: Moore V. Regents, Michelle J. Burke, Victoria M. Schmidt

The California Supreme Court, by excluding a potential remedy, has eliminated many concerns generated by a lower court decision resolving rights to the cell line derived from John Moore's spleen. Yet, the Supreme Court gave little attention to remedies that remain. The authors argue that a constructive trust, a remedy of considerable vintage and great flexibility, could be applied to achieve a just result in such circumstances without affecting the biotechnology world at large.

We use the terrestrial ecosystem model (TEM), a process-based model, to investigate how interactions between carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics affect predictions of net primary productivity (NPP) for potential vegetation in North America. Data on pool sizes and fluxes of C and N from intensively studied field sites are used to calibrate the model for each of 17 non-wetland vegetation types. We use information on climate, soils, and vegetation to make estimates for each of 11,299 non-wetland, 0.5° latitude × 0.5° longitude, grid cells in North America.
