The Influence Of Olfactory And Tactile Stimuli On The Feeding Behavior Of Melibe Leonina (Gould, 1852) (Opisthobranchia: Dendronotacea), Winsor H. Watson Iii, Charles M. Chester

The nudibranch Melibe leonine feeds using the rhythmic movements of its large oral hood to capture small crustaceans that are present in the water column. The frequency of these feeding movements, or hood closures, is proportional to the concentration of available prey. The purpose of this study was to determine what qualities of prey cause the rate of these feeding movements to change. Animals were observed during exposure to the following treatments: (1) filtered seawater; (2) Artemia-conditioned seawater (smell); (3) small particles in seawater; (4) particles soaked in Artemia-conditioned seawater; (5) frozen Artemia and; (6) live Artemia. The marine slime mold Labyrinthula zosterae, the causative agent of wasting disease of eelgrass Zostera marina, has been isolated from both 2. marina and 2. caulescens on the south coast of Japan. In addition, wasting-disease symptoms were produced in disease tests on leaves of Z. japonica and 2. marina using axenic cultures of L. zosterae isolated from Z. caulescens and Z. marina. Thus, the known host species of L. zosterae are expanded to include 3 species of Zostera. Although symptomatic necrotic lesions were observed in field-collected seagrass leaves, widespread die-off from wasting disease was not evident on the south coast …

With the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act as an example, important issues related to the goals and effectiveness of TUR are examined. The benefits as claimed by proponents are contrasted with shortcomings outlined by opponents in point-counterpoint style. Ultimately, the authors call for more balanced analysis.

Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Dioxin Levels In Fish: Implications For Risk Assessment, Judy S. Lakind, Daniel Q. Naiman

After comparing sampled and modelled dioxin levels in the tissue of fish near pulp and paper mill discharges, the authors argue that, until an improved bioaccumulation model is incorporated into EPA's Risk assessment process, determination of human health Risks associated with consuming dioxin-contaminated fish should be based on sampling.

Inhibition Of Escherichia Coli Chemotaxis By Omega-Conotoxin, A Calcium Ion Channel Blocker, Louis S. Tisa, Baldomero M. Olivera, Julius Adler

Escherichia coli chemotaxis was inhibited by omega-conotoxin, a calcium ion channel blocker. With Tris-EDTA-permeabilized cells, nanomolar levels of omega-conotoxin inhibited chemotaxis without loss of motility. Cells treated with omega-conotoxin swam with a smooth bias, i.e., tumbling was inhibited.

An Index To Assess And Monitor The Progression Of Wasting Disease In Eelgrass Zostera Marina, David M. Burdick, Frederick T. Short, Jaimie Wolf

An index based on rapid visual determination of the relative amount of necrotic tissue on eelgrass shoots infected with wasting disease is described. The utility of the index for assessing and monitoring disease levels in natural and experimental populations of eelgrass is illustrated with examples from the field and a mesocosm experiment. Using the Wasting Index, monitoring of the disease along with environmental variables provided correlational data that aided understanding of the disease progression and linked disease severity with salinity. Once salinity increased above a threshold, disease spread rapidly and was inversely correlated with leave area
