Climatic, Edaphic, And Biotic Controls Over Storage And Turnover Of Carbon In Soils, David S. Schimel, Rob Braswell, Elisabeth A. Holland, R Mckeown, Dennis S. Ojima, Thomas H. Painter, W J. Parton, Alan R. Townsend

Earth Sciences

Soil carbon, a major component of the global carbon inventory, has significant potential for change with changing climate and human land use. We applied the Century ecosystem model to a series of forest and grassland sites distributed globally to examine large-scale controls over soil carbon. Key site-specific parameters influencing soil carbon dynamics are soil texture and foliar lignin content; accordingly, we perturbed these variables at each site to establish a range of carbon concentrations and turnover times. We examined the simulated soil carbon stores, turnover times, and C:N ratios for correlations with patterns of independent variables. Results showed that soil …

Temporal Alternation Between Light- And Nutrient-Limitation Of Phytoplankton Production In A Coastal Plain Estuary., Jonathan Pennock, Jonathan H. Sharp Aug 1994

Temporal Alternation Between Light- And Nutrient-Limitation Of Phytoplankton Production In A Coastal Plain Estuary., Jonathan Pennock, Jonathan H. Sharp

School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering

ABSTRACT: The potential for Light- and nutrient-limitation of phytoplankton production was examined in the Delaware Estuary, USA, by combining a hierarchy of expenmental approaches including smallscale bioassay experiments, ecosystem-level analysis of nutrient concentration and stoichiometric ratios, and light-limitation modeling. Light was found to be the predominate regulator of phytoplankton growth throughout the estuary during the winter period as a result of high turbidity and a wellmixed water column. However, during late spring, phosphorus (P) was found to limit growth. This observation was confirmed at each of the experimental levels, and was related to several factors, including elevated input ratios (230:l) …

Cgmp Binding Sites On Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase: Role In Feedback Regulation Of Visual Transduction., Rick H. Cote, M Deric Bownds, Vadim Y. Arshavsky May 1994

Cgmp Binding Sites On Photoreceptor Phosphodiesterase: Role In Feedback Regulation Of Visual Transduction., Rick H. Cote, M Deric Bownds, Vadim Y. Arshavsky

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

A central step in vertebrate visual transduction is the rapid drop in cGMP levels that causes cGMP-gated ion channels in the photoreceptor cell membrane to close. It has long been a puzzle that the cGMP phosphodiesterase (PDE) whose activation causes this decrease contains not only catalytic sites for cGMP hydrolysis but also noncatalytic cGMP binding sites. Recent work has shown that occupancy of these noncatalytic sites slows the rate of PDE inactivation. We report here that PDE activation induced by activated transducin lowers the cGMP binding afnit for noncatalytic sites on PDE and accelerates the disation of cGMP from these …

Application Of A Maximum Likelihood Processor To Acoustic Backscatter For The Estimation Of Seafloor Roughness Parameters, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, Christian De Moustier May 1994

Application Of A Maximum Likelihood Processor To Acoustic Backscatter For The Estimation Of Seafloor Roughness Parameters, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is used to extract seafloor roughness parameters from records of acoustic backscatter. The method relies on the Helmholtz–Kirchhoff approximation under the assumption of a power‐law roughness spectrum and on the statistical modeling of bottom reverberation. The result is a globally optimum, highly automated technique that is a useful tool in the context of seafloor classification via remote acoustic sensing. The general geometry of the Sea Beam bathymetric system is incorporated into the design of the ML processor in order to make it applicable to real acoustic data collected by this system. The processor is initially tested …

The Lifetime Of Excess Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide, B Moore, Rob Braswell Mar 1994

The Lifetime Of Excess Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide, B Moore, Rob Braswell

Earth Sciences

We explore the effects of a changing terrestrial biosphere on the atmospheric residence time of CO2 using three simple ocean carbon cycle models and a model of global terrestrial carbon cycling. We find differences in model behavior associated with the assumption of an active terrestrial biosphere (forest regrowth) and significant differences if we assume a donor-dependent flux from the atmosphere to the terrestrial component (e.g., a hypothetical terrestrial fertilization flux). To avoid numerical difficulties associated with treating the atmospheric CO2 decay (relaxation) curve as being well approximated by a weighted sum of exponential functions, we define the single …

Technology Transfer And The Genome Project: Problems With Patenting Research Tools, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Professor Eisenberg argues against a system providing for federally-sponsored inventions to be patented if any associated person so desires. She believes that the system does not adequately weigh the possibility that the greatest social return from genome research will require some discoveries to be in the public domain.

Sulfate And Msa In The Air And Snow On The Greenland Ice Sheet, J L. Jaffrezo, C Davidson, M Legrand, Jack E. Dibb Jan 1994

Sulfate And Msa In The Air And Snow On The Greenland Ice Sheet, J L. Jaffrezo, C Davidson, M Legrand, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

Sulfate and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) concentrations in aerosol, surface snow, and snowpit samples have been measured at two sites on the Greenland Ice Sheet. Seasonal variations of the concentrations observed for these chemical species in the atmosphere are reproduced in the surface snow and preserved in the snowpit sequence. The amplitude of the variations over a year are smaller in the snow than in the air, but the ratios of the concentrations are comparable. The seasonal variations for sulfate are different at the altitude of the Ice Sheet compared to those observed at sea level, with low concentrations in winter …

Quantitative Economic Evaluations Of Hiv-Related Prevention And Treatment Services: A Review, David R. Holtgrave, Ronald O. Valdiserri, Gary A. West Jan 1994

Quantitative Economic Evaluations Of Hiv-Related Prevention And Treatment Services: A Review, David R. Holtgrave, Ronald O. Valdiserri, Gary A. West

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Holtgrave and colleagues at the CDC set forth an extensive taxonomy of HIV prevention and treatment services and review reports of efforts to subject some of those services to formal economic evaluation. They find few services thus far to have been so evaluated, no evaluation to have focused solely upon behavioral outcomes and most economic evaluations to lack formal quantitative analyses.
