We conducted an experiment on sand and clay tropical forest soils to test the short‐term effect of root mortality on the soil‐atmosphere flux of nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, methane, and carbon dioxide. We induced root mortality by isolating blocks of land to 1 m using trenching and root exclusion screening. Gas fluxes were measured weekly for ten weeks following the trenching treatment. For nitrous oxide there was a highly significant increase in soil‐atmosphere flux over the ten weeks following treatment for trenched plots compared to control plots. N2O flux averaged 37.5 and 18.5 ng N cm−2 h−1 from clay trenched …

PREP Reports & Publications
Using funds from this grant, the City of Dover Open Lands Committee worked in conjunction with the Planning Department and Conservation Commission to plan, promote and present a series of workshops. These workshops were designed to educate decision- makers and residents about the economic, aesthetic, and environmental benefits of open space. In addition, the Dover Open Lands Committee developed two brochures and a display to publicize the Open Lands Committee and to encourage further citizen participation.

Field Evaluation Of Wet Weather Bacteria Loading In Hampton/Seabrook Harbor, Phil Trowbridge
PREP Reports & Publications
During 2002, in and around Hampton Harbor, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) conducted two rounds of wet weather sampling of stormdrains, tributaries, and harbor stations for bacteria and flow in order to calculate bacteria loads. This information was needed to prioritize pollution sources as part of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study of bacteria in Hampton/Seabrook Harbor.

Age And Growth Estimates Of The Winter Skate (Leucoraja Ocellata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Michael D. Morin, Seung H. Suk, William Huntting Howell
Biological Sciences
The northwest Atlantic population of thorny skates (Amblyraja radiata) inhabits an area that ranges from Greenland and Hudson Bay, Canada, to South Carolina. Despite such a wide range, very little is known about most aspects of the biology of this species. Recent stock assessment studies in the northeast United States indicate that the biomass of the thorny skate is below the threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act. In order to gain insight into the life history of this skate, we estimated age and growth for thorny skates, using vertebral band counts from 224 individuals ranging in size from …

Message Deleted? Resolving Physician-Patient E-Mail Through Contract Law, Michael Mccann
Law Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the impact of e-mail on the physician-patient relationship, and how contract law can resolve the uncertainties incumbent in this nascent form of communication. Significantly, courts have yet to indicate when the physician-patient relationship begins by e-mail, or to what extent e-mail affects the duties of the relationship. Instead of waiting for judicial guidance, physicians and patients can employ specialized contracts to clarify the role that e-mail plays in their relationship. As a result, more physicians and patients will regard e-mail correspondence as a valuable means of communication, and a tool for improving the quality of health care …
Agricultural Biotechnology In China: An Unreachable Goal?, Stanley P. Kowalski
Agricultural Biotechnology In China: An Unreachable Goal?, Stanley P. Kowalski
Law Faculty Scholarship
Recently there has been much discussion about the People’s Republic of China’s (PR) investment in and commitment to agricultural biotechnology (agri-biotech). Rapid economic expansion, population growth and technological development are changing the PRC; accompanying these changes is increased demand for high-quality food and fibre. Agri-biotech is optimistically viewed as an important way to meet these demands. Whereas Chinese technological capacity in agri-biotech has advanced significantly over the past decade, it may be unable to meet these challenges. Even when this capacity is combined with good intentions, enlightened policy and large capital outlays, accelerated development of agri-biotech may nevertheless be precluded. …

We assessed the physical, chemical and biological conditions at two sites along the Lovell River on University of New Hampshire (UNH) -owned conservation land. The discharge was 4.4 m3 s-1 at Site 1 and 5.7 m3 s -1 downstream at Site 2. Canopy coverage ranged from 8-25%. Canopy was dominated by Eastern Hemlock (79-84%). Much of the stream was strewn with large boulders and the substrate consisted of rocks of highly variable sizes ( 3-549 cm dia.). Specific conductivity (22.1-23.3 µS), pH (6.4) and temperature (7.9-8.3 °C) varied little between sites. Macro-invertebrate bio-indices indicated either excellent water quality with no …

Seafloor Segmentation Based On Bathymetric Measurements From Multibeam Echosounders Data, Yuri Rzhanov, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Bathymetric data depicts the geomorphology of the seabottom and allows characterization of spatial distributions of apparent benthic habitats. The variability of seafloor topography can be defined as a texture. This prompts for the application of well developed image processing techniques for automatic delineation of regions with clucially different physiographic characteristics. In the present paper histograms of biologically motivated invariant image attributes are used for characterization of local geomorphological feahires. This technique can be naturally applied in a range of spatial scales. Local feature vectors are then submitted to a procedure which divides the set into a number of clusters each …

Stormwater Management Bmp Report And Website: Innovative Stormwater Treatment Technologies Bmp Manual, Steve Couture
PREP Reports & Publications
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) received money in 2001 from the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) to create a manual and a website of Innovative Stormwater Treatment Technology Best Management Practices. The money was used to partially fund an intern position dedicated to the project and printing of the manual. The result of this project is an accessible resource to assist communities and developers in the selection of the best available stormwater treatment retrofits
