An Experimental Approach To Understanding The Impact Of Vernal Pool Buffer Size On Wood Frogs (Rana Sylvatica), Nicole Alexis Freidenfelds
An Experimental Approach To Understanding The Impact Of Vernal Pool Buffer Size On Wood Frogs (Rana Sylvatica), Nicole Alexis Freidenfelds
Master's Theses and Capstones
Strategies to conserve vernal pool-dependent amphibians emphasize the maintenance of adequate areas (buffers) of terrestrial habitat surrounding the pool. I conducted a large-scale field study that specifically examined the effects of buffer width manipulation on adult and metamorph wood frogs at eleven vernal pools in a managed forest in central Maine. Buffer width treatments were 30 m or 100 m forest buffer surrounded by a 100 m clearcut, or no cut (reference). I encircled pools with drift fences and monitored wood frogs from April--November, 2004 and 2005 using pitfall traps and radio-telemetry. Buffer width had no effect on the number …
Treatment Of Dioxin/Furan And Pcn Contaminated Sediments With Palladized Magnesium, Linda M. Rauch
Treatment Of Dioxin/Furan And Pcn Contaminated Sediments With Palladized Magnesium, Linda M. Rauch
Master's Theses and Capstones
Sediments contaminated with dioxins/furans and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) have been the subject of little study although they are equal, if not more significant, contributors than PCBs to toxicity at selected sites. The reaction of a bimetal catalyst, palladized magnesium (Mg/Pd, 0.01% by weight Pd) with these contaminants was studied in solvents and sediments.
The reaction for single congeners in solvent resulted in 69-95% removal in 30 minutes. The detection of dibenzo-p-dioxin for the dioxin reaction and naphthalene/tetralin for the PCN reaction demonstrated dechlorination. A 24 hour sediment reaction with Mg/Pd resulted in 48% and 71% reduction for spiked sediments (500 …
Analyte Rebinding Of Optimized Molecularly Imprinted Polymers In Water, Sayantan Roy
Analyte Rebinding Of Optimized Molecularly Imprinted Polymers In Water, Sayantan Roy
Master's Theses and Capstones
A series of non-covalent Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) were prepared using caffeine and guanosine separately as template molecules. A wide variety of MIPs were prepared by varying a number of formulation parameters, including the template, recognition monomer, crosslinking agent and porogen types and concentrations. The specificity and selectivity of the MIPs were determined by rebinding studies in an aqueous medium using HPLC detection and the results were supported by gas adsorption experiments. Rebinding conditions, such as the pH and MIP concentration were also varied to determine the best conditions for analyte recognition. By using variety of polymerization conditions the particle …
Change In Family And Peer Adverse Life Circumstances In Relation To Juvenile Firesetting, Patrick A. Roberts
Change In Family And Peer Adverse Life Circumstances In Relation To Juvenile Firesetting, Patrick A. Roberts
Master's Theses and Capstones
Juvenile firesetting is a major problem causing millions of dollars worth of damage each year, and yet there is very little know about it. In order to address this lack of knowledge the present study examined the relationship between adverse life events and juvenile firesetting behavior. This relationship was examined using a sample of students from 17 public and 10 private schools in Southern Australia (2105 males, 1629 females). Data were collected from the students during grade 8 (mean age of 13) using the Youth Assessment Checklist, and again during grades 9 and 10.
Adverse life events were found to …
An Intervention Tool For Use Against Gender Stereotypes In Children, Sarah N. Muller
An Intervention Tool For Use Against Gender Stereotypes In Children, Sarah N. Muller
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study examines the occurrence of gender stereotyped beliefs and behaviors in young children and methods of intervening against gender stereotypes. Current literature on gender stereotype interventions is reviewed and evaluated. A new model of intervention, based on a coloring book made up of gender counterstereotypic images, is proposed. Implications and limitations are discussed.
Power And Punishment In Nietzsche, Jacob Skinner
Power And Punishment In Nietzsche, Jacob Skinner
Master's Theses and Capstones
Nietzsche appears to hold contradictory views about punishment. Uncompromising in his commitment to noble ideals, Nietzsche often decries punishment as small-minded resentfulness and implores readers to look away. Though at times he describes it as an exalted flexing of the will, making the case that punishment plays a necessary role in social life. This paper argues that Nietzsche's views are not incompatible and that he holds a coherent theory of punishment which permits these clashing positions.
I argue that Nietzsche's theory of punishment is predicated as follows. Power is the objective measure of value. The single justification for punishing is …
Characteristics And Dynamics Of A Moose Population In Northern New Hampshire, Anthony Richard Musante
Characteristics And Dynamics Of A Moose Population In Northern New Hampshire, Anthony Richard Musante
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abundance indices suggest that the moose (Alces alces) population in northern New Hampshire has stabilized despite favorable habitat and conservative harvest. Natural mortality of unknown cause is presumed a primary reason although little is known about moose reproduction and survival in New Hampshire. This study (2002-2005) was designed to investigate the dynamics that impact this population.
Analysis of harvest reproductive data (1988-2004) indicated that average field-dressed weight of adult cows increased although corpora lutea count declined from ∼1.4- 1.2/cow in the study area and statewide. Yearling ovulation rate (∼42%) and average weight (<211 kg) declined about 25% and 4%, respectively. Parturition of radio-marked cows ranged from 8 May-13 July (median=19 May) with 78% of births from 13-27 May. Calving rate of yearlings and adults (>2 yr) averaged 30 and 85%, respectively, …211>

Group 12 And Group 13 Metal Complexes Of Cross-Bridged Tetraamine Macrocycles, Wei-Chih Lee
Group 12 And Group 13 Metal Complexes Of Cross-Bridged Tetraamine Macrocycles, Wei-Chih Lee
Master's Theses and Capstones
The use of radiometal-based radiopharmaceuticals for the therapy and diagnostic imaging of various diseases is rapidly increasing. Metal complex stability in vivo is an important factor to keep the metal chelate intact under physiological conditions for the radiopharmaceutical application. A novel class of cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles with nonadjacent nitrogens bridged by an ethylene unit was developed to make metal complexes with good thermodynamic stability and higher kinetic inertness towards dissociation. Complexes of Ga(III) and In(III) radionuclides are widely used in diagnostic imaging and their respective half-lives are convenient for specific diseases. The new complexes [In-CB-DO2A]+ and [In-CB-TE2A]+ have been prepared by …

Daphnia hyalina, D. galeata, and D. ambigua were exposed to the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in 30 cm temperature-stratified columns. Changes in egg ratio, lipid index, length, and growth were recorded over 3 day experiments. Spatial distributions were recorded during 6-hour constant light experiments and 3 day fluctuating light experiments. D. hyalina and D. galeata stayed in the upper half of the column in temperatures of 18--22°C when exposed to M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua remained between 10--19°C regardless of food type. For across all experiments, depth and temperature ranges were narrowest in treatments with M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua incurred costs to …
The Effect Of Air Pollution And Time Spent Outdoors On Pulmonary Function In A Diverse New England Population, Thomas Daniel Lambert
The Effect Of Air Pollution And Time Spent Outdoors On Pulmonary Function In A Diverse New England Population, Thomas Daniel Lambert
Master's Theses and Capstones
Outdoor air pollution has been associated with declines in pulmonary function. We collected daily pulmonary function measures from 165 participants in New England during July and August, 2004 and compared these measures to outdoor air pollution using single and multiple pollutant models. Increases of 10mug/m3 PM2.5, 10 ppb O3, and 1 ppb NO2 were associated with -1.29%, -0.54%, and -0.151 % changes in FEV1 of asthmatic participants spending more than 5 hours outdoors, respectively. Effects for non-asthmatic and all participants spending less than 5 hours outdoors were near zero and not significant. There was also evidence indicating that the largest …
Degradation Of Methyl Tert Butyl Ether, Priya Saripalli
Degradation Of Methyl Tert Butyl Ether, Priya Saripalli
Master's Theses and Capstones
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is the most common oxygenated fuel additive used in gasoline to improve combustion and reduce air emissions. MTBE is commonly found in natural water as contaminate from gasoline spills. Remediation of the contaminated water is difficult by traditional treatments. In this thesis, degradation of MTBE using Fenton's reaction was studied. The effect of pH, concentration of ferric ammonium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide on the removal efficiency of MTBE was studied and optimum conditions were determined experimentally. A maximum conversion of 90% was achieved when 0.14 M MTBE was reacted with 1.1 g/L ferric ammonium sulfate …
Effects Of Forest Clear Cutting On Spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma Maculatum) Migration, Jessica Susannah Veysey
Effects Of Forest Clear Cutting On Spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma Maculatum) Migration, Jessica Susannah Veysey
Master's Theses and Capstones
Upland buffer zones are a proposed management tool for vernal-pool-breeding amphibians. Substantial validation of buffers, via experimental upland habitat disturbance, is lacking. Specifically, no studies have examined immediate effects of clear cutting on spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum ) migration. I used clear cutting to experimentally manipulate upland buffer widths at 11 vernal pools. I then radiotracked 40 adult spotted salamanders at these pools, and modeled their migration with mixed-effects regression. Mean maximum distance from the pool was 106.0 +/- 15.4 m (range = 1.6 to 427.6 m). At clear cut-treatment pools, mean percent of time in the cut was 27.2 …

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Recombination between chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I B-F and class IV B-G genes has enabled more precise identification of genes controlling immune responses. Congenic lines, each containing a unique MHC recombinant, were developed with 99.9% genetic uniformity to inbred Line UCD 003 (B17B17). A new recombinant, R13 (BF17-BG23), originated in the tenth backcross generation for R1 (BF24-BG23). Two experiments tested the R13 immune response to bovine red blood .cells (BRBC) and Rous sarcoma virus (RSV).
A single R13B17 sire mated to five R131317 dams produced progeny segregating for R13R13, R13B17, and B17B17 genotypes. These progeny were injected with …
Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage
Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage
Master's Theses and Capstones
Apoptosis is an extremely important and highly regulated function in neutrophils. As the most abundant, but shortest-lived white blood cells, they must initiate this process in the absence of pathogens and selectively release their potent cytotoxic components when pathogens are present. Many pathogens are able to modulate this process in neutrophils, either for the host's benefit or for their own. Previous work has shown that transmigration across a T84 intestinal epithelial crypt cell monolayer increases the ability of neutrophils to bind and kill Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium).
The goal of this work was to see how S. Typhimurium …

Current Intrapartum Care Practices In India, Rizwana Rizwana
Master's Theses and Capstones
According to the annual report of the Government of India, 100,000 women annually continue to die because of childbirth related complications (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India), 2000-2001). In India, over 90% of women become mothers and a majority of them deliver without skilled assistance during delivery. This translates to approximately 30 million women in India experiencing pregnancy every year, and 27 million having live births (Bakshi, 2006). Of these, 136,000 maternal deaths occur every year due to childbirth complications, most of which can be prevented. Literature reveals that lack of appropriate care during pregnancy and childbirth, …

Performance Assessment Of Porous Asphalt For Stormwater Treatment, Joshua F. Briggs
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this study is to assess the stormwater management capability of porous asphalt (PA) as a parking lot in Durham, New Hampshire. The site was constructed in 2004 and consists of a 4-inch PA pavement course overlying a porous media reservoir, including a fine-grained filter course. Cost per PA parking space ($2,200) was comparable to that for dense mix asphalt ($2,000). Pavement durability has been adequate. The lot retained or infiltrated 25% of precipitation (18 months) and 0.03 lb/sf of chloride (1 year). There was high initial surface infiltration capacity (IC) at two locations (1,000--1,300 in/hr), and moderate …
Activation Of Toll-Like Receptor 2 Through Tlr2-Lrr Binding Synthetic Peptides, Christopher Benton
Activation Of Toll-Like Receptor 2 Through Tlr2-Lrr Binding Synthetic Peptides, Christopher Benton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Bacterial sepsis and systemic inflammatory immune responses continue to be major causes of illness and death despite extensive research into the development of antimicrobial agents. There is a need for novel therapeutic reagents designed to modulate these responses. Toll-like receptor 2 plays a key role in the development of innate and adaptive immune responses to microbial products that interact with the receptor's extracellular leucine-rich repeat ligand-binding domain. In a preliminary study, five peptides were synthesized that bound to the leucine-rich repeat region of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). We tested the hypothesis that the novel TLR 2 leucine rich repeat binding …

An Assessment Of Plankton Populations, Toxic Cyanobacteria, And Potential Impact Of Introduced Marine Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) In Pawtuckaway Lake, New Hampshire, Jessica V. Trout-Haney
Center for Freshwater Biology
A field study was conducted during the summer, 2005 to evaluate the lake water quality and planktonic communities in Pawtuckaway Lake, NH. Of special concern was the condition of the plankton populations since the lake had been subjected to introductions of adult sea-run alewife
Overall water quality ranged from mesotrophic to eutrophic based on total phosphorus (8-31 !g L-1), chlorophyll a (max South, 5.0 !g L-1) and Secchi disk transparency (max North 5.1 m, min South 2.8 m). Of the three sites sampled, Fundy, North and South, Fundy (Zmax < 2 m) did not stratify and had the highest concentrations of total phosphorus, followed by North and South sites, respectively. North and South sites stratified throughout the summer and developed anoxic hypolimnia, with the most severe oxygen deficit at the North site
Potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria were detected at all three sites. Throughout the …
Migration Of Net Phytoplankton And Zooplankton In Mendum’S Pond, New Hampshire, Amanda L. Murby
Migration Of Net Phytoplankton And Zooplankton In Mendum’S Pond, New Hampshire, Amanda L. Murby
Center for Freshwater Biology
The study examines the vertical distribution and migratory behavior of net phytoplankton and zooplankton of Mendum’s Pond in Barrington, N.H. The cyanobacteria, Microcystis and Aphanocapsa were the dominant net phytoplankton in this lake. Dominant zooplankton included Daphnia ambigua, Daphnia catawba, Bosmina longirostris, and both calanoid and cyclopoid copepods. Vertical distribution of net phytoplankton suggested migratory behavior, but no consistent pattern was observed. The zooplankton migrated nocturnally, however, calanoid copepods seemed to simultaneously migrate nocturnally and reversely at sunset, suggesting the presence of separate species or different age classes. Diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton was not correlated with the distributions …

Shellfish Tissue Monitoring In New Hampshire Estuaries 2003 And 2004, Phil Trowbridge
PREP Reports & Publications
The goal of this project was to provide data for two NHEP indicators of estuarine condition: TOX1 and TOX3. These two indicators report on “Shellfish tissue concentrations relative to FDA standards” and “Trends in shellfish tissue contaminant concentrations”, respectively. Both of these indicators depend on data from the Gulfwatch Program. In particular, TOX3 requires annual data at benchmark sites to assess trends. In 2003 and 2004, the NHEP supported the collection and analysis of tissue samples from benchmark sites in Portsmouth Harbor, Hampton-Seabrook Harbor and Dover Point.
